Accy Places

The old flat roof houses on Lancaster Avenue.

Built during the war for the workers at the Bristol factory, I think
???
Used to live in one of those. They were cold & damp, but good family sized houses.

Are you thinking of Ted Heath & his band, flashman?

Also remember Bob Whatmough & his band?

Bob used to have a grocers on Ormerod St. He used to sell biscuits from those big tin boxes with see through lids. We used to call him "Biccy Bob"

Used to love visiting him - told me all sorts of tales.

I think it was Eddie McGarry. There was another Big Band played at Blackburn's St George's Hall.

Ted Heath had the national status.

Before you were born! Round about 1960 - 1963.
they were the old flat roof houses, long since gone, just accross from the park.

Re: Accy Places

Cazzzer, there were several flat roof houses on Moss Hall Road, a lot, if not all of them have had their roofs converted into ridge roofs now.  Were they similar to the ones on Lancaster Avenue?

Caz 17-08-2003 13:36

Re: Accy Places

Think I know the ones you mean.

No, the ones on Lancaster Ave and around it were double fronted, redbrick houses.(not prefabs as a lot of houses put up just after the war were) They had large gardens back & front.
They had metal window frames and concrete floors, even upstairs!
We used to use those old brown Stantons pop jars as hot water bottles at the time, if they rolled out they got smashed!
As far as I know they were built during the war for the workers at the Bristol factory (aircraft), which I think was based at the GEC site.
They were later used as part of the general council housing stock.
Not sure about the origins of the Moss Hall Road ones. Do you mean the ones that looked a bit like seaside chalets? Always reminds me of a place in Blackpool down there.

Monday Accy Con Club, and grab a granny Thursdays at Blackburn Mecca. 8)

Remember Accy disco. Round about '67 I used to go in. Got your hand stamped if you wanted to pop out.

Then went to Blackburn Mecca when it was the Golden Palms, & occasionally the Cavendish Club.

Later started going to Blackpool Mecca, as they had a free bus running from Accy then.

Started going to the Con in '66, but it was a bit heavy for me. Look at one of the rockers the wrong way and you could get a thump in the face! Joined Accy disco when it opened in summer, '67. In fact, I had one of the first membership cards. Fantastic nights up there, with Big Mick spinning the sounds and everyone dancing in a circle. Used to go to Blackpool Mecca in the '70's, but I never bothered with the downstairs bit. It was straight up to the Highland Room for me - Northern Soul heaven!

The correct name for the tenement was "Ellisons Tenement"...Who was Ellison, thats what I want to know......but who remembers the old mill that used to stand just before the railway viaduct....you could still see the stains from the waterwheel on the side (waterwheel long gone)....and who remembers the old graveyard by the side...sometimes you'd see sheep in there (probably waiting to meet their maker in the slaughterhouse across the road, i.e. now the site of the Accy bowl...

Lynne 03-10-2003 15:36

Re: Accy Places

Tks tealeaf. Yes Ellison. Don't know him sorry (not that old). I do remember the graveyard, sheep, slaugherhouse but not the mill. There was an old theatre there too. Princess and Empire Cinema on Edgar st. Also there was a blacksmith in that area. I used to take Farmer Nelson's horse Dolly to be shoed there. I remember the mine at the bottom of Willows Lane just up from Accy Baths and opposite to Howard and Bulloughs were my dad worked all his life and was captain of the cricket team they won the league in 1949. After swimming in Accy Baths (not posh enough to call swimming pool) we would go across the road to the chippy for a penny worth of chips.  Don'f forget the Odean WE COME ALONG ON SATURDAY MORNING GREETING EVERBODY WITH A  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I remember Marlbrough st, Ribble bus stop, from Manchester, used to catch last bus home to Clayton, after seeing my girlfriend who lived opposit the clock garage, in the 60s, Clive loyd was always on that bus I think he was pro for Hasligdan at that time, was there a cafe in Marlbrough st?.Tony Abbot worked at a record shop in abbey st and he was also a DJ at the arcadian Ballroom on sat nights. Us under  age drinkers got our beer and cider from off licence on the corner, till me and a mate got caught by the cops who were waiting outside, and took us home to our parents, for a good telling off. And of all the girls I walked home, or to the bus stop and miss my bus home, there was a lot of empty bottles of beer & cider left up those back alleys, not to mention Hanky Panky.

Yeah...The Old House at Home. Remember being in there one sunday in the 70's waiting for a friend coming up from the south on one of those White Lady Standerwick buses. It was one of the first sundays that football was played at Ewood Park, something to do with the power cuts if I recall correctly. Haven't thought about that in ages. And that cafe was a bun and brew place, don't think you could get any real food there except maybe a tepid meat pie from one of those glass pie warmers (pies were warmed by a 3x15 watt bulbs) that were always full of dead flies.

Alan Gilmartin 01-12-2003 07:22

I think the pub was a Masseys brewery pub, there wasnt many Masseys pubs in accy, Mostly Duttons & Thwaites, Lion, breweries & a couple of Yorkshire Ones & a couple from Manchester. Its nearly 35 years since I was in accy, so I suppose most of them will have gone.

But as Mez says -- it was on Melbourne St. In fact I don`t think there is a Marlbrough Street -- There is a Marlborough Rd running from the Old Iron Bridge and up and across Queens Road.

Machpelah Graveyard on Hyndburn Road

Hi, the old graveyard along Hyndburn Road, where the sheep used to have their last nibble of grass before they took them across the way to the Abbattoirs, was called MACHPELAH, pronounced Mac-pee-lah.  When they "officially vandalised" it approx.16/17 years ago, any remains they found in the graveyard were taken up to Accrington Cemetery, and were buried in a communal grave.  Who would have thought that the remains of loved ones would be built on top of ... by a garage!

Good photo Atarah, brings back some memories (not going to tell you, as it involved a girl ::)

I can see that the quality of chat on here is very high and woe betide anybody who's memory slips.  Lots of fun, and informative.

Cazzer, do you remember Barry Williams? (he lived in the flat roofed houses and went to Hyndburn Park School), I think Terry Riggs also lived thereabouts in the early 60's.

I also lived on Warwick Close, having moved from Meadoway in 64.  My dad remained there until he died in the early 80's, I moved away in 67, and have never lived in Accy since.

Yea, I remember the New Inns, also called the bay horse, the Loadstar, built an exstention on to it , about 1970, they called it Victorias, a sort of theam pub. then there was the Cranberry Fold, in Darwen. Do any of you remember the cemetary in Union St.With regards to the Empire in Ossy
It was owned by cyril whitaker, and also the palladium.

Darby 20-01-2004 08:47

My mum was the manageress at the Palace on Rhydings Street. I went to Ossy Tech opposite the Paladium, and adjacent to the Empire. Went regularly to both, and to the Empire in the early 60's when it was a dance place. The Royal pub was a nice place anmd had an Irish Landlord for years. My Uncle Roland almost lived in there.

Cyril Whittaker was (as said) the manager of both the Empire and the Paladium. Great days, and lots of fun, not to mention the fun "down the backs" in between the dancing!!

jambutty 31-01-2004 00:37

I heartily agree with you flashman the Accy Con Club on Saturday nights was the place to be as was the Ritz on a Friday and for boys and girls learning the intricacies of the waltz, quickstep and foxtrot there was always Knowlmere Street Dancing. Nothing quite like the big band dance music. I mean we actually got to hold the girl, which was nice.

jambutty 04-02-2004 11:31

When I left school in ’52 I went to work at Scaitcliffe Colliery at one end of Scaitcliffe Street after six weeks training at Bank Hall Pit in Burnley and became a pit pony. I wanted to be an electrician but they wouldn’t give me an apprenticeship so I pushed tubs of coal from the face to the chain. I left after a year and joined Uni-Relays on Abbey Street to install Radio Luxembourge to go with the Home Service and Light Programme on what today would be called cable radio. I reckon that I have run across most of the rooftops in Accy and surrounding areas hauling a cable behind me. Still couldn’t get an apprenticeship to become an electrician with them either so after a few months left to join the navy to become an electrician. The navy had other ideas and I became a Radio Electrician.

Just across the road from the baths down a side street there was an alleyway on the left that led to a door where you could buy 1d and 2d packets of Smiths crisps after swimming. You got a proper sealed bag with the little blue salt packet inside but the crisps were small bits, but lots and lots of them - enough to fill a hungry child’s belly.

The Saturday mornings at the Odeon was OK but the Bug Hut (Kings Hall) was better ‘cos they had the Flash Gordon serial and cowboy films and it only cost 3d on the benches at the front or 4d on proper seats. 6d upstairs.

Whenever I could scrape together a few pennies I would go to the Hippodrome to watch the variety shows from the Gods of course. If I couldn’t get a few coppers I would stand outside the entrance with that sad urchin look on my face hoping that someone would take pity on me and take me in. Some did and some just gave me the 6d that it cost to go up in the Gods. One nice lady even gave me a bag of sweets.

We used to do something similar at Peel Park. The exit gates would be opened about 20 minutes before the match ended so we watched from the top of The Coppice (you could see half of the pitch) and after half time we would make our way down to the ground. We would stand outside and cheer and shout for Stanley. What usually happened was that the gatekeeper would tell us to come in and we would get passed down to the front to sit on the benches pitch side of the wall and watch the last few minutes of a match. Jack Hacking the goalie was my hero because I was a goalie too.

I can’t imagine that sort of thing happening today.

Here we are 40 yrs later, with the same memories. Its really interesting reading your recolections of those days and to jog my memory of the ones I forgot. Bob's Stall on Accy market sells tripe (and great black puddings). Bought some black puddings last Saturday. Am trying to get them to make some for a Jewish vegetarian friend of mine, but no luck so far .....

I remember the Empire, girls in the loo with spit mascara talking about lads, being enticed down Foxhill Bank (whether I went is a different matter). It's sad to see it now, derelict and unloved, when it probably was the cradle of many a good-sized family!

The disco off Whalley Road was Knowlmere Street, used to have a disco on Sunday afternoons, I think.

Remember Miners make-up from Woolies, girls? We used to buy a card with four lipsticks for about 1/-, but we only ever used the really pale one. And the eyeshadows - also four to a card, blue, green, mauve and white.

I remember the young fella that lived at the pub in Melbourne St. He was a mate of mine. Keith was his name. Chippindale or similar as a surname rings a bell. I once peered into the cafe there through the window and a kid who was looking out suddenly flapped his ears. He really did. I got the shock of my life. It looked real funny.

I used to like going to the Hippodrome pantomimes at Christmas. One that stands out was 'Jack and the beanstalk'. Then another time my favourite funny man that I had seen in films was appearing live at the Hippo. How could I ever forget him. Old Frank Randle himself.
This thread is one of many I've read in the short time since I joined. I have read approx 400 threads. Mainly to do with nostalgia. Much to my wifes chagrin. She now thinks I am married to my computer.:D There are so many threads on the same theme it's hard to know where to post.:)

Terry, it really doesn't matter to that extent where you post. Just keep putting them memories down in writing, so we can all re-live them with you.

Thanks mate. I was beginning to think I was becoming a pest. It's just that all these pages have revived memories that had it not been for this site I would probably never have remembered any of the stuff that I have. If you follow my drift:)

Hi guys, I wonder if anybody can help me, it's a bit of a longshot but worth a try.

I've been trying to get hold of Robert Horrocks, who I believe ran the "Cranberry Fold" back when it was open. I stumbled across this thread so though I'd ask, do any of you know what happened to the place? It's owner? Any info would be greatly appreciated and even the smallest bit of info might help me find Mr Horrocks.

Thanks in advance if anybody can help

:)

Keep it all coming Terry, Accrington of 50s & 60s is all I have, so it means a lot to me.

I just finished reading all the nostalgia threads. I am sitting here with a smile on my face, a sigh on my lips and warmth in my heart. I have not had anyone to remember with for many, many years. I recall the Empire as one of my favourite places way back when. Hmm I recall all the blackburn lads that filled the Empire back in the early sixty's. Ahh that formation dancing too, my goodness that just popped into my head. Sea Of Heartaches and Save the Last Dance for me. I wonder how many recordings of those two songs they wore out.

Ah, oldlass, what memories! - Spit mascara in that cramped Ladies, all the lads stuck firmly against the wall and the girls walking round arm in arm. And what to do with your handbag - whether to leave it in the cloakroom and stick your lipstick, comb and money down your bra (some odd-looking boobs around in those days!) or cart it round and have to dance round it.

And you always knew when it was nearly over because of Sea of Heartbreak - can still remember all the words! And those invitations to a walk(!) down Whiteash from heavy breathing youths ... not telling whether I went or not. And those frocks with all the underskirts, like looking up a hen's bottom!

Aahhh - memories!

I have been clicking on to accrington web for the last couple of years but at no time as madam harkers dance academy had a mention alright you are saying never heard of it but in the fifties quite a lot of teenagers learnt there first dance steps there and from there progressed to the Ritz or up the Con where was it you ask facing the warners arms on church street along side st james church wall the building is long gone but the memories linger on Although a fairly small building the dance floor could take quite a few dancers and madam harker herself was always in charge no band but a good selection of records and the main thing never any trouble or drunken behaviour

Does anyone remember going to the Con? or Knowlmere Street on a Sunday afternoon?

I missed out on a lot, because I went off to boarding school near Manchester at 16, and when I came back, moved to Blackburn.

Spring Hill Methodists disco on Saturday night, anyone?

does anyone remember a place on castle st. the cavern i think it was called, saw long john baldry there in the late sixties or mid cant remember exactly drank to much in them days,it was only open a few years. also chaigley manor was a great place for kids used to make weekly donation from my wage to support it,did no good though not enough people helped when it was going-great shame.

Your right cashman, it was the cavern, I saw Long John Baldry on the same night, pity you cant remember, because, Kiki Dee, Rod Stewart, were on with him. It was only open for a couple of years, I still have my membership card. I think it closed in 1969, I think Accy disco opened then, I never went there, Wynonnie Harris will know more about that. Also saw Blues Incorporated, The Formost, Swinging Bluejeans, Undertakers, there.

Johnny Kidd & the Pirates played round here? Wish I'd known! Still, I probably would've been too young to get in anyway.

I was trying to reply to Caz about living on Lancaster Ave. What is the significance of 7 years?
