Graduated from St Mary Mags to the Con Club about 1942 -- Eddie McGarry`s rendition of Glen Miller`s "Moonlight Serenade" prompted me to ask a young lass for a dance. She`s still with me.

Re: Can you name the songs you danced too?

Don't know where it was as I never actually went there, but people used to tell me how good it was. There were some great soul clubs in  this area in the '60's. Apart from the famous Accy Disco and Preston Stax club, there was Blackburn Stax club, Burnley Mecca, the Bird Trap in Brierfield and, if you were the really adventurous type, the Twisted Wheel in Manchester.

Well I am a 70s man I suppose. I listened late (very late) 60s like 69.. but my growing up (teenage years) so to speak was done 70s

In that case, you probably don't remember any of those clubs. Wigan Casino and Blackpool Mecca perhaps? Went to both of those clubs in the 70's, but I have to admit to being in my 20's by then.

I too grew up in the 70s.  Can remember dancing to Drifter's, Tina Turner, ABBA, etc. etc.  Remember dancing to them at the Sports Centre disco also the Big D, up Ossy.  Also once in a while the Sacred Heart had a disco.  Remember going into the pub at the cornor of Harvey Street (underage) before going to the Big D.  Later on I progressed to the Hop in Burnley then the Loadstar.  Anybody remember the Astronaught on Union Street, that had a disco upstairs but nobody was  not meant to dance as they didn't have a licence. ::) [smiley=angel.gif]

I remember the Loadstar, on the ribchester rd. First we would go to the New Inns, then on to the Royal Oak on longsight road, then to the Loadstar ( very hard landlady with bleach blond hair , went to school with my dad. ) then we ended up at the Cavendish. Always the same friday  nights. When the Cavendish first opend they used to have top class acts, in the caberat room & the latino lounge, there was the speak easy disco as well. Lets not forget the Starlight club in little Harwood.

Re: Can you name the songs you danced too?

Although I was born in Blackburn, I moved, with my parents, to Sheffield when I was 14 years old.
I spent much of my time in the Esquire Club. R n B was the order of the day there, with several top names from the U.S. One exception was a local group, at that time known as Vance Arnold and the Avengers. 'Vance' would be about 19 or 20 at that time. Shortly after, he reverted to his real name, and became Joe Cockers' Big Blues. Within a short time, the Big Blues disapeared, and the rest is history (it's all history isn't it)
The other club in the city was The Mojo, owned and run by a bloke called Pete Stringfellow. Wonder what happened to him ?

Anne. Do you remember the Beachcomber in Preston? . Had some great nights there, I also worked at the PRI for a short time.

Swedish Rhapsody by Mantovani was the alternative to Victor Silvester. My first record was Via Condios by Les Paul and Mary Ford and he was the first to multi track a record. I also got Answer Me by Frankie Laine before it was banned because he sang Answer me oh Lord and he re-recorded it to sing Answer me my love. And there's also Johnny Ray's Cry and another banned record Such a Night.

Somebody mentioned the Blackburn Mecca earlier. As a teenager, I used to play drums in a group based in Southport. We had a Sunday afternoon gig booked at the Blackburn Mecca. It was the first time we had ever played on a revolving stage. We started off playing out of sight of the audience and then they set the stage revolving to bring us into view. When it stopped, Dougie, the lead guitarist, fell over!

Yep, you're right, Al, although the original version was by Ruby & the Romantics in 1964. However, it was the Marvelettes' 1967 cover that got 'em up on the floor at Accy Disco.

Went to St Annes church around 77/78, banging my head pogoing on the pipes on the ceiling!. I was a long standing Arcadian Ballroom bod and got in free because I brought my records down. That would be about 74/75 and also a long termer at the New Era 78/80, dancing to all the futurist classics. Anyone remember Mick Cronshaw turning up dressed as Nash the Slash!

It depends what sort of dance. Aged about 14 I would have been jiving to Bill Hayley's "Rock Aroung The Clock" or Elvis's "Hound Dog" and smooching to The Platters, "Only You" and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" etc.

A bit older and I discovered Glenn Miller and learned ballroom dancing (utility - not the "my mother sewed 50 million sequins on my dress" sort). At our wedding reception my husband and I started the dancing with a slow quickstep to "Moonlight Serenade" - so romantic! - then went completely overboard with "In The Mood". A cine film of us jiving, me in my lacy wedding dress and him in his RAF uniform, is really something to see. ;)

I recall jiving/bopping in the aisles at The Palladium when Billy Haley and the Comets film Rock Around The clock was showing.
The 'sign off' tune for dance nights at the nearby Empire was 'Someday I'm Gonna Write The Story Of My Life' sung by Michael Holliday. When that played we knew the evening was over. The dances started there before they had even removed the cinema seats.

Must have been skiffle at Spring Hill and Christ Church around 1956, anyone remember the bands there with their tea-chest basses and washboards? 'Twas an eye opening world after Perry Como, Doris Day and the big bands - all of which were very nice but... Both were Saturday night events with lights on and discreet? adult "supervision." Happy memories even so, and seemingly such a long time ago...

""Spring Hill and Christ Church around 1956, anyone remember the bands there with their tea-chest basses and washboards?" Yes Spring Hill was the first dance I went to as a teenager, then we progressed to Knowlmere Street and Accy Con Club. Danced to the Lionel Morton Four who later became the Four Pennies. Remember Eddie Cockram and Twenty Fight Rock, Summertime Blues and Three Steps to Heaven also Gene Vincent, be Bop a Lula. Now we are talking serious bopping!!!

I remember the Rockets - an Ossy group - lead singer Jack Groves, washboard Melvin Mann, tea chest Frank Isherwood, guitar Stuart Holmes.

There was an Accy group named the Blue Diamonds with a lead singer called Ken who was an Elvis lookalike.

I think the guitarist was Gordon Holmes Margaret, Stuart was his older Brother who was a driving instructor, I thick Gordon still lives on Hornby Street in Ossy, or he did up to a couple of years ago, Frank Ishewood lives on Edinburgh Drive and worked behind the bar in the Stop and Rest for years, may still do

I remember now - 'Gordon' - you are right.
I heard that Jack Groves is living in Fence nr Padiham.
Ken Booth (Elvis lookalike) died young - his sister told me a few years ago
