Remember when most pub bogs were outdoors? A far healthier option, in my opinion. Never any smells and it made a man out of you going out in the rain. The only problem was the lights rarely worked. Are there any outdoor bogs left in Accy/Hyndburn?

wow lots of nostalga and memories on this thread.

who remembers the EJ Riley shop which was opposite Argos on Little Blackburn Road I used to go in most Saturdays to add to my subuteo collection( which I've still got 35 plus years later). I remember Woolworths being in an L shape and in the Union Street bit they had the fresh meat counters

I think the demolition of Ken Cleggs on bull Bridge and the pub next to it was the early 80's rather han the early 60's

Does anybody remember the cafe that the bus drivers used in the market hall that you accessed from the bus inspectors office it was always a haze of blue smoke but the meals were really good and cheap from what I remember as a kid

On another thread somebody mentioned there being a bar on the peel street side of the bus station next to the newsagents, it rings a slight bell but can anybody recall it's name

Was born on Croft St and used to go to the papershop next to the Black Bull on Bull bridge. Can't quite recall who owned it but he there for years. Funny thing is we got our papers from there and I delivered from another papershop and the lad that had the same round I took his families papers PMSL now at thought.

Had my 1st legal pint in Black Bull with my Dad in 1973 and the Drill Hall was still going as was the factory across the road.

When on the buses used to have to come under the viaduct from the Dill Hall or Church Kirk run and if empty shoot off up King St and to dept but there was usally someone on for the town centre LOL :tongueout

My uncle George Rose used to own Rishy Crisps, then when he moved it up Harrod he sold out a multinational, cant remember the name, but he was still Chairman, then a few years later he died of a heart attack at his desk, ( circa 1970s ) .

Not sure Alan but I think it may have been Walkers that bought Rishy, or could have been Bensons

Alan Gilmartin 29-08-2008 07:52

Re: Years Gone By

Yea thats the one Bensons, jaysay. He started in my aunt Annies back room making the crisps then slowly built it up from there. Big cigar smoker, lived in a house on the Espanade in Rishton, Hence Rishy. I think his daughter still has a stall in Accy Market Hall, her name is Susan and he had son George.

I know a few people who used to work at XL crisps in Harwood, which was owned by Bensons. It may be they used to make the XL brand which is why they referred to it as XL. I thought at one time it was owned by Brooke Bond. I'll have to ask next time I see one of them.

I think I am right in saying that the first supermarket in Accrington was Associated Dairies (I am not sure that they called themselves ASDA at the time,) on Blackburn Road occupying premises vacated by the Co-op, and it was established about 1964.
It was a pretty crude affair, with rough-sawn wooden racks, and goods displayed in the outer packaging as received, i.e. large cardboard boxes slashed open to display the contents.

Yep i remember that, it used to be called the Queens supermarket! But as Cashy says Sauls was certainly there before then, used to go there when i was a kid with me Mum and Dad, used to love the way your cash used to shoot up to the office, and then wait for the change to come back down!

remember moving to accy on a nice little sreet.then some scummy landlord left a house empty for years leaving it to bring the street down in fact its still empty now, then the local school putting a 11 grey fence up making it feel you were in a prison at the same time chopping down a picturesque tree at the end of the street.then the scummy landlords buying up everything an moving in druggie scum and noisy polish nieghbours.so when i complained to let the house[buy the house] they said the owner was polish and was abroad and there was nothing they could do.complained to the council was still waiting for a reply before i moved up here.phoned police would prob still be waiting so accy has been let down by those in charge the local council is a disgrace tory or labour[they are in a old pals act]the local bail hostel letting paedophiles etc running amock etc .if accy was still the same when i first moved there i would still be there..

John started at Rhyddings before changing to Accy Grammar School in 1960.

John went on to become Headmaster at, i think, Haslingden Grammar School, but unfortunately had some heart probs and had to retire early, he's doing fine at the moment though.

Astronaut was on Union Street not Church Street (which I see you've corrected in another post) Was a regular in there most Friday and Saturday nights during the mid-seventies, used to go in there with Italian John from the Blue Dahlia in Accy and Alf who ran the Dahlia on Blackburn Boulevard

Is this the Church St in Accrington, if so, there's never been a petrol station in Church St.

Retlaw.

How did you manage that, Mr C? I always had to pay.

Last time I was in was Boxing Night, 1976. There'd been a derby match at Ewood and it kicked off between Rovers and Clarets fans. Ended up getting lamped (even though I was a neutral) and made a stratrgic retreat!

Used to go in there some lunch times, met a lass who worked at Woolies for for drinkies, the main thing I remember was that you stuck to the bloody carpet, it was disgustingly sticky wi people pouring their ale on the floor instead of down their necks:rolleyes:

I remember reading about that.

The nit nurse was just taking those little tots for a breath of fresh air, whilst the chemicals started to work on their shaved bonces.

Continuous showings at the Cinema, you could stay in all day if you wished. Hated going in though just before the end of the main movie ... had to shut my eyes and ears for a while so it wouldn't spoil it later. :D

I used to love the B movies, especially the detective and western fillums. In fact, a lot of the time, I used to like 'em better than the main feature!
