Any old AM CB radio users out there?
In the early 80's (illegal AM) CB radio was in widespread use locally and nationally. It provided a great social scene for users who had meets at local venues several times a week. There were enough local people at it to fill Martholme Grange. and The Sett End, to name but two. All age groups mixed together and there was never any hassle at those venues.
Sadly it all came to an end after a few glorious years when FM CB radio became legal and every little kid got one for Christmas. Due to its illegal nature most people kept their real identity secret. I was one of them - Red Tape was my handle - are there any more 'good buddies' about? 10/10 till we do it again |

Re: Any old AM CB radio users out there?
When I was first introduced to CB by Rainbow Warrier and Beano we were listening to a "LP" by Boxcar Willie, and as I couldn't think of a good handle, they chose "Boxcar Willie" for me. It was a real laugh in those days, riding about "Brickhouse" in your "wrapper" looking out for the Busbys and the Smokeys. BIG TEN FOUR, good buddies.

Re: Any old AM CB radio users out there?
Awww the old Aunt Mary now that brings back some memories. Mostly good but some not so good.
We had one of the best set ups in Preston. It helped to pass on those lonely nights when Mick was at work and Kids were in bed. Some times I would still be sat there mike in hand when Mick came home. When I couldn't be bothered to modulate i would be sitting on the side ear-wigging. Youve spoke to the best. Now speak to the rest. Take care coz i care bud. We left, we right, we up, we down, we in we out, we gone. 10.10 breaker, break, your gone. |

Re: Any old AM CB radio users out there?
Thanks for the link Jambutty. I drove a preganant roller skate back then.
I dont ever remember those 18 & 19 codes but there was a 13 code (insults). Were you a breaker too? |
Re: Any old AM CB radio users out there?
I was a breaker but wasn’t a prolific ratcheter. Once you get home from work the CB wasn’t at the head of the list of things to do.
I spent most of my air time DX’ing at weekends. I was Jambutty for that but Green Flash for domestic copies. My ‘wrapper’ was a Short Nosed Henry (Ford Escort) and it was green. I had a Black Shadow side band rig with 80 channels and a 10w kicker for DX’ing. I used to have a silver rod but the local council made me take it down so I put a DX twig in the loft but it wasn’t as good for long distance copies. A 25w burner to compensate upset my neighbours with TVI. Once FM came in I sold my AM rig and gave FM a whirl for a while but it just wasn’t the same. Too many ‘planks’ so I called it quits. I’ve still got my old FM rig, Turner power mic, ATU, twigs, PSU etc. tucked away even though CB is unlikely to ever come back. |

Re: Any old AM CB radio users out there?
All my gear AM & FM got nicked in a burglary in '86, and the cheeky lads came back within 7 days for the ariel. I had an AM Cobra with high and low band on either side of the 'straight 40' as well as a legal FM 40.
They were happy days - not surprised at the frequency close down - replaced by boards like this and chat rooms - technology/time marches on :) |
Re: Any old AM CB radio users out there?
I had a Cobra too, although the exact spec is lost in the mists of time. I was home based in Hazzard county, went by the handleof Bookie's Runner and did the Martholme Grange thing and an eyeball at a pub on Thwaites Road. Sweet heaven the Tshirts with everyone's handle...., the orangeboom, the lack of deoderised bodies it's all coming back to haunt me. Will have to go and lie down now 66's & 88's, 10/10 till we do it again.
|
Re: Any old AM CB radio users out there?
I had a Sommerkamp TS788DX (Coffee Warmer) 100w output and continuous frequency coverage from 26 to 30 Mhz. This probably was an introduction to amateur radio which in a way spurred me on to enrol at Accy college for the City and Guilds Radio Amateurs Examination in 1985 and then in 1988 I passed the morse code test and obtained the full amateur radio licence.

Re: Any old AM CB radio users out there?
hi folks, new to this site so i hope i ve got the right place, i use to be on the cb radio back in the 80s when i was 13 (now 41), use to have a superstar 360 fm with all the mods, super super low to super super high, and running 200 watts, loved the am cb days i wish it would come back, as i made so many friends, communication is not the same today, as you dont meet up with people you talked to, any way what is the score on the cb radio, is it still active ?, or is it all gone.

Re: Any old AM CB radio users out there?
In reply to Margaretr;
I remember you from `The good old days.` Those were a great few years, it was all over far too quickly for my liking though! As for some names I remember; Soldier Blue, Nimrod, Kellys eye, Hubcap, Spanner man, Dalek, Copenhagen, Kipper, The Doc, Speedo, Jolly Green, Bimbo (male!) Tabby cat and Tarot. Things were never the same after it was legalised. I hope to setup a `Virtual CB Radio` so all the old boys can get together and talk on the mic. I don`t know what interest there would be though, but I think it`s worth a try. I will post a link when I have the software and server setup and ready to go. Anyway, good to see you are still keeping well. I always had a sweet spot for you, you were one of the prettiest ladies on CB Radio!! Take care, Daywalker. |

Re: Any old AM CB radio users out there?
Hi all,
I am not sure if anyone would be interested but I have set-up a kind of `virtual cb radio` here online. I didn’t anticipate many users so I have only created 19 channels. Of course more can be added if there is any interest. You will of course need a mic and speakers. The server is going live online tonight and will be ready to use by tomorrow. Its all been tested and is working just fine, just can’t wait to hear some of the old familiar voices! There is a help page and a download page. I have made it as simple as possible but if you need help I won’t be far away. Regards, Daywalker. |

Re: Any old AM CB radio users out there?
The instructions for my `Virtual CB Radio` can be found on this link Welcome to Daywalkers
I will be on chan 19 while I am near the computer. Come and say `hello` If you have any problems, message me on here and I will give you a phone number so I can help you. I will leave the Virtual CB server up and running for thirty days to determine if there is any interest, so if you like the idea, USE IT and say `Hello.` Lets get this going! Looking forward to hearing some old voices, Daywalker. |

It was through the ham radio I first met him, he repaired a 2 metre transmitter for me, a good man at his job. It was well over thirty years ago. I think I went up Nuttall street and turned left past a factory, then a sharp right up a steep hill, there were only a few houses there and he lived in one. Would that have been your dad? |

It certainly was a long time ago. I was first licenced in 1983 and got the A licence in 1986. I think it was before I passed the A licence exam when I went to see him for the first time. I went a few times afterwards, I wonder if you were there at the time. |

No, I had been married for 20 years by then.
I don't think there would be any of us children at home by then...we had all married and moved out...it would be just him and Ma. |
