I worked for a firm that did a lot of contract work at Naylors around that time, in fact I remember correctly in think they had a fire and we went in to do the fire repair damage, I worked for Pilkington Brothers at the time

Naylers jaysay with an 'e' :D just makes me titter as used to say this repeatedly to people when they asked the name of the company.

Don't remember a fire, but left in 1964 and then back for a couple of years, probably 72 > 74. Do remember, however, that Naylers did all the printing for Pilkington Bros.

Westender: Did mention you to Alan as I told him about this thread, unfortunately, not having your name at the time, no way would he know who you were.

I don't know if anyone is reading this now as it would seem the last log on this subject, 'Alan Cornthwaite' seems to have been made some time ago.

Well, I am Peter Gregory and I was Alan's best friend when at Nayler's and beyond for a few years. I then moved to Gloucesterhire and we seem to lose touch, as you do.

I then moved to Australia in November 1982. I have spoken with Alan a couple of times from Oz but not gone any further with this.

Now, as for age I can perhaps help. I turned 65 in August of this year and I know that Alan was about 12 months older than I. I think his birthday is in April, but not sure.

The last time I spoke with him he was living in Huncoat I think.

Now I married in September of 1966 to Jean Rushton. Her father had the Rising Bridge Post Office but died unfortunately a couple of years later with cancer. Her mother Marion re-married a couple of years later but again unfortunately he died of a heart attack a couple of years later. she never re-married.

Jean and I divorced in 1978 and I remarried to Marilyn Hyde (nee Pearce) from Cheltenham and we moved to Australia in November of 1982, where we have been ever since.

We now live in Perth. I have four children, two with Jean - a boy Nick (40yrs) and Joanne (37 years) - and two children with Marilyn - Peter (23 yrs) and Oliver (19 yrs). I have four grandchildren, two girls and two boys, they are Mustapha, Sara, Connor and Georgia.

I have stayed in the printing industry all this time (50 years it was in September of this year) and currently I look after the print division of the largest independent supplier of stationery and office supplies in Western Australia, called Quick Corporate Australia Pty Ltd

Well having said all that it is someone else's turn so I look forward to comments, if anyone has any of course.

Well, well, hiya Peter Gregory ..:)

If you look back through the posts may recognise me as Katie Rooks ... used to collect your docket every morning ... can't remember your number though. :D

Great to hear how life has treated you .. quite good from the sound of it. Well done.

What people may not realise, is that Naylers also had a sister company (and still do), called Absorbent Dripmats. They printed a very high percentage of beer mats in the country. I used to send out a pile of old ones to collectors for £1 plus postage and packing. Wish I had kept a few of them now ... probably would be worth something to some people, but also an excellent reflection of the beer industry.

Bob Dobson's recent publicaton of 'Accrington Acclaimed' shows a couple of pictures from Naylers. One is a trip to the Festival of Britain 1951 .. the other later, taken on the shop floor. Sure you are on that one Peter .. next to Jeff Barnes and Tom Haworth. Other people on that picture are Jimmy Allen, Jimmy (?) .. he was a printer ... will come to me. Lawrence Taylor (the manager), Mr. Lloyd. There are four other people on there I don't recognise, but sure you will.

If you look at my post 29, you will see that Alan Cornthwaite will be 66 now and his birthday is in June ... same as myself. Haven't seen him about since last year .. sure he is though. Honest Peter, he has changed very little ... lovely bloke.

Mr. Nayler's initials were G.E.G.N..... George Eric Grinham Nayler .. strange thing to remember eh ? I believe the grandson, Alistair, now runs the company. If Bob Dobson, sees this, he will confirm this ... gets his books printed there and knows John Nayler quite well. Do you remember used to have to call John 'Mr.John' and the daughter 'Miss Diane'.

Well, well.

I do remember you, a bit of a stunner if I recall. Used to sit around behind one of the Printomatics a breaktime.

Certainly remember tom Howard, he was the foreman, and of course, Lawrence Taylor, his was called Malcolm if I remember.

Yes The Nayler's initials GEG Nayler, which actually was Gerge Eric Grisham Nayler and his John was JEG Nayler.

Actually spoke to him about 12 months ago on the phone from Oz. He was very pleased to hear from me.

Alan was as thin as a rake and from your comments seems this is still so.

I have put a little weight on over the years however but at 6ft around 100kgs, not too bad really.
Do you have any pics you can post, i don't have any at all.

Do you know, I have not got one photograph of my time at Naylers .. incredible isn't it ... still, didn't have digital cameras in those days and photography was expensive.

Just asked Bob Dobson if any chance could put the one up for you that is in his book.

Aah yes, Malcolm Taylor ..forgotten him, and Brian Heys .. he was in compositing wasn't he ? Names keep coming back to me .. slowly though.

Have you got an Australian accent now ? Can't imagine that .. :D

As Katex said, I used some photos of naylers in my recent book 'Accrington Accl;aimed'. from memory, they all came from the firm, who are great to deal with. I feel sure that Alistair, who now runs the business though Joh n still turns up, will email them to you.

Cornthwaite - A family of that name lived in India St. Dave was about my age.

Yes Brian Hays, he was religious nut if I remember. But what happened to everyone?
It would be good to know. Is Malcolm still around, if so he would be in his 70's now I would think, and Tom probably late 70's, again if he is till around.
As for accents Australians tell me that they i am from the north of England, but English friends when talking to them say I do have an Ozzie accent. Not surprising I suppose since I have been here 27 years.

Sorry to tell you Peter but Malcolm Taylor died last year, he was a friend of mine, we used to live near each other and I knew him from doing contract work at Nayler's in the early seventies, we both frequented the White Bull on New Lane
