Who remembers
Long time since this thread was going on, only just read it. Alec Broadly was the gaffer at the baths, his wife Mrs Broadly used to swim after closing. Mr Johnson was the boiler man, and attended to the laundry, remember those hard scratchy towels--lovely. My Grandfathers brother (?? Chappell) used to have a grocers shop in Scaitcliff Street. I used to help some times an 'aporth of sugar, a pennys worth of tea, (or was it the other way round)? screwed up in a piece of newspaper. Put it on the slate, always clean by Saturday morning, to start again on Monday.Big mountain of butter and a couple of butter pats. Loose milk from a churn into a ladies jug covered with a tea towel. Shop was taken over by an ex bobby (?? Niell)? Lance |
