Accyweb, what did it used to be like?
I was talking to someone earlier today, he was telling me how accyweb helped him through some bad times because it's members would laugh with him and cajole him through his period of whoa.
Can we do the same anymore? I for one don't think so, we used to have a sense of humour back then, use humour these days and boy, will the miserable souls let you know. Does anyone else other than me miss the days when a joke was a joke, Major political problems would be discussed and then dismissed as not really worth falling out? Could we please have less reasons for any of us to argue and go back to just being friends? Yeah right, as if this will make any difference to the ones that have taken over! |

Re: Accyweb, what did it used to be like?
The original accrington web only had about 4 or 5 members way back in 1998.. no arguments then :) Closed down due to lack of users after a year of trying.. I guess 98 was too early for accy :) I sold the domain in around 2002 as a business listing to a lcoal business man for 50 quid.
Internet Archive Wayback Machine Current accyweb owned by roy is a thingy of its own success... get back to -6 members like 1998 and all will be well and a lot kless hassle for uncle roy hahaha... lets draw up a list of who to get rid of :) |
Re: Accyweb, what did it used to be like?
I wasn't here in the early days, but understand that 'meets' were more frequent and well attended by the fewer members, who got to know each other's sense of humour.
The opportunity to observe body language is now the missing factor which causes humour to be misconstrued and misunderstood. |
Re: Accyweb, what did it used to be like?
My feelings echo Marg P.'s last blog entry.
Which I hope isn't her actual last blog entry. |

Lets have a squabble box for those having a ding dong in which we lock them in till they either sort it out or have a punch up (might be good You Tube footage) so we get peace. :p The site is a savior for some and was a laugh a minute as owt serious pushed too far was laughed at. How would the body lanuage bit work? Are we all gonna be doing a corprate style conference via web cam? Bring back the good old days please. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

i agree wi less, a lot of the humour n craic has gone, from when i first came on board, can't put me finger on the reason, yeh there is more miserable gits now n when i first joined n despite what some say, i know fer fact that is the reason some folk have gone. but suspect also that people do come n go from any site, fer differing reasons, some return some do not, thats life. but some people do get help still if there in the crap or a bit down i reckon.:) i still love a laugh n a bit of fun, some don't like it, well TOUGH.:D

Re: Accyweb, what did it used to be like?
I agree with the body language bit.
I have had one or two altercations with members on here but it appears that the altercations are with the same people. I feel that I can hold my corner in either written or verbal conversation but if I feel that someone is taking the.....taking a rise or trying to be a smart arse at my expense I am not too amused. Light hearted banter is what forums are all about and I enjoy that but what started out as light hearted banter turns sour. If anyone calls me 'My Son' again I will willingly strangle the prat. :p:D |

Re: Accyweb, what did it used to be like?
I don't think there are too many arguments on here. I LIKE the arguments, especially the hundred-and-odd post ones that arise out of something and nothing. Pure entertainment, in my view!
The problem is that some people take the arguments seriously. Why? If I have a right old scrap with someone on here about something, so what? Does it affect my relationship with my other half?...my health?...my job? Of course not, it has absolutely no bearing on my everyday life and I hardly give it a second thought, once I've gone off-line. The member formerly known as Kipax said something a few years ago that should be the motto of Accyweb: "It's just words on a computer screen...it's not real life." Words of wisdom, indeed! I can quite categorically say that I can have a heated argument with anyone on here and I'd be happy to have a laugh and a beer with them afterwards...as indeed, I did with my late friend, Ianto.W. For crying out loud, lighten up! :D  |
Re: Accyweb, what did it used to be like?
I agree wholeheartedly with Wynonie. I don't see the debates as arguments when people are simply putting forward their points of view even if it does get very passionate. As long as it doesn't deteriorate into personal insults those threads can be brilliant and really attract my attention. Sometimes I may have a very strong point of view myself and nothing anyone says can persuade me otherwise. Other times somebody may say something which makes me look at tit in a different light and I may end up changing my mind.
One thing which I do find rather sad and pathetic is when someone pounces on another member who they have disagreed with in the past and drags up an old argument to illustrate why they couldn't possibly agree with them on something new. That is just plain silly. There are people I have wholeheartedly agreed with on one subject whilst fervently disagreeing with them on another topic. I may thoroughly disapprove of something one person proposes but that doesn't mean I dislike the person, only the suggestion. They may be nothing more than words on a computer screen but the express people's opinions and people's experiences. In some cases the internet may be the only human contact a person has if they are housebound. Perhaps it would be good to remember that there are real people behind the screen names, real people with feelings. I know we tend to have a laugh at the antics of some who get on a high horse about something and get it all out of proportion, or someone who comes along determined to insult everybody, or the would-be webmaster who asks for help and advice in setting up their own forum and then beggars off with all the ideas claiming them as their own. (no names, no hats) but that's just an echo of real life anyway. One thing I don't like and which I do feel spoils any forum, is when people bring their private lives and personal arguments onto the site and make it a forum issue. That has been the death knell for a couple of forums which I have previously enjoyed and which sadly no longer exist. One thing I miss on here is those photographic quiz things Acrylic Bob used to do. I find it difficult to do a quiz here now because of the lack of the edit feature so I can't go back to the original post and insert the answers. It just confuses people when they don't know which ones have been answered. Well it confuses me anyway. So I've kept my quizzes etc to other forums. |
Re: Accyweb, what did it used to be like?
Well, I like it here the way it is now.:mosher:
More people are joining every day- great. It may well have been more of a fun site when it began, but it still entertains and amuses me. perhaps I am easily amused - but since I am your resident 'Harbinger of Doom' that shows that the site is more fun than you think;) |
Re: Accyweb, what did it used to be like?
I've only been here 4 years so I don't remember the early AccyWeb. Didn't even know it existed until Busman found it when he was trying to find out about this weird place he was moving to.
When people go on about the old days' I wonder what I've missed. :( |
Re: Accyweb, what did it used to be like?
Well to be quite honest Accy Web plays a big part in my life, now that I can't get out the same, but like Wynonie I like a good debate and don't take anything serious, once I've logged off, yet there are some people who take verything to heart, my advice is lighten up:D:D:D

i don't whinge to anyone about accyweb .......i encourage them to join ..........just find it very "heavy" going for me at times .

Re: Accyweb, what did it used to be like?
I came across this site quite by chance a couple of years ago. I joined because it's good to hear about what's happening in Accy but also because I think it's a great site with just the right mix of characters and personalities. Sometimes it makes me laugh, sometimes it makes me sad and sometimes it's very thought provoking.
No matter what, though, it's always interesting. I feel like I've made friends on this site. :D |

Re: Accyweb, what did it used to be like?
I still have Accyweb as my home page and check it every day. I only post when I feel i`ve got something to offer up or I come up with a decent gag. I think my main claim to fame was pushing Gayle towards Accyweb in the run up to the P*n*ptc*n saga and she went on to become a cornerstone of the site. She spends far too much time on Facebook at the moment:D
