I remember going to the Golden Palms on my own one night, was just turned 16. Got talking to 2 girls drinking half Largers and wanted to be cool so asked them if they would like a drink. Brandy and Babysham, each!!!!!! 15 bob for the 2, thanks alot for the drink and off they went. Had to walk all the way back to Accy (1st of many) Lesson learnt :theband:

Same thing happened to me at Blackburn Mecca, bought her a drink, she asked if I wanted to dance, a slow one, she gave me a love bite, then buggered off.

I loved the Cav though it was three clubs in one, Disco, Latina lounge, Cabaret room, never went in the gamming room, if we didnt pick a girl up in one off the pubs befor closing most of them were taken by the time we got up the Cavendish, but still great times.

steeljack 16-01-2010 05:49

Re: Which was best, Golden Palms, Cavendish, Cats Whiskers or any such club!

Alan , Blackburn Mecca and the Golden Palms were the same place , just a change of name , not sure what year but think in the 70s sometimes , no way can I imagine a place in Blackburn (or the UK) these days being called the Mecca without some sort of 'onion' dome on the top ..... maybe some local Accy web uesers can tell us when the name "Mecca" was stopped being used as a gambling den (bingo hall ) :D :D

Well I work at both the Cave and Palms, plus Cats and Angels in Dingle land and later on Martholme Grange, to me the best one was the Cav, the new Cav that is, when it was all one huge room instead of the four different rooms, this was after the fire in the early
70s, after that Martholme

Angels was one of the places that we celebrated our 18th birthdays from school, Monroe's in Gt Harwood was the other. I'm sure the bouncers knew that, if it was an 18th birthday, the odds were that the majority of the group were only 17.

Lar De Dars opened just after I turned 18 so we started going there as well, but Angels was still a big favourite.

You had left by then I think Jaysay, but Pilkingtons did the conversion of the Cavendish and a few weeks later it burnt down. Just before it did Pilkingtons mob went to watch Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon on stage there. I remember it well because the strobe lights made me throw up under the table!!!! That and the ridiculous amount of booze I had put away!!! Happy Daze!!

Real goooood neete at the top hat went there a couple of times when I was 17 , some of my older mates took me after my inauguration to the barbary coast in 1972,remeembering it was a warm summers night ,good job it was because when we was going home got outside to see a bloke being hit and going through the car showroom window next door landing on a car. Bloke got off the car with not a mark on him ,lucky devil.

Had some great times at the Mecca in the mid to late 60s, most friday nights I had to walk home to Accy after a plate of steak, chips and currie at the Indian just around the corner.
My favourite club though was the Ace of Spades in Whalley. I remember seeing Christine Keeler there, she couldn,t sing but???

Yes, Cashy. I remember seeing Ben E King there.

Burnley Mecca was really strict with their staff. We all had to line up and show our finger nails before work. They did provide a free taxi back to Accy though.

I left the UK in 1974 and I think it was called the Golden Palms if I'm not mistaken. I loved going to the Cav we had great Saturday nights out there. Last stop was the Wine Lodge then on to the Cav. Angels was in Burnley. Just as you head into Burnley from Accy, you turned left and it was down a side street.

It had a main floor with a balcony all round the top where they served food. So you could go upstairs, eat some chips and watch the talent downstairs. :D

Thanks for the geographical correction, Cashman. I wasn't a native of Accrington in those days, but I recall having a 'ball' so to speak at the Empire with the girl who became my wife and has been the light of my life ever since. Made some great friends there, too, many of whom we are still in touch with today.

Accy Con Club was supposedly the 'posh' dance venue. Most of the local factories held their seasonal shindigs there. I was banned from the place for three months for battering some moron who grabbed my then girl-friend's chesticles. The ban was forgotten after two weeks when the perverted scumbag (who was on bail) was sent down for the attempted rape of another girl.

Ah! the joys of youth.

Saw Tony Christie performing there in the 70's. It was a bit of a crap-hole. The beer was cheap and plentiful, but it tasted like washing up water!

No doubting it. My good lady and I went there twice a week for two or three years before we married in 1963. Small place with a great atmosphere. If only we could turn the clock back!

Re: Which was best, Golden Palms, Cavendish, Cats Whiskers or any such club!

2 questions, was it the Concord in the market close to the Cavendish and what was the name of the pub, I think they did it up and changed the name in the early 70's, on the run to the Palms which you got to at the end of the path through the Cathedral from the bus station?

jaysay 06-02-2010 09:17

Re: Which was best, Golden Palms, Cavendish, Cats Whiskers or any such club!

I used the Pub every night prior to oing into work at the Cav, it was called the Concord, not sure what your second question was though, the path from the Deck to the Pamls was Dandy Walk

Alan Gilmartin 07-02-2010 07:39

Re: Which was best, Golden Palms, Cavendish, Cats Whiskers or any such club!

There was a new pub near the Cavendish called the Clarence opened about the same time, used to go out with the barmaid, Pub at the end of Dandy Walk was the Sun I think.

pot on Alan the pub was called the Clarence not the Concord, if I remember rightly wasn't there a concord pub in the precinct leading of the bus station in Burnley, may have been under the old Lucas club, Lancsdave will know:D

That was it, the Clarence, bit like drinking in a large featureless hall if I remember. As regards the pub at the end (and a bit further) of Dandy Walk, does the name Mucky Duck mean anything or am I way off???

There's mention of the Empire in these two threads too.
