What was it called?
Those things you saw every day when you was a nipper but not sure what it was called due to less grey matter! What was the name of that cloth/lace thing on the back of Dads chair to stop the grease stain from his barnet??
|
Re: What was it called?
Antimacasser - not sure of right spelling.
Macasser was a type of hair oil - the 'anti' bit related to keeping it off the upholstery PS just had a quick google - spelling almost right http://www.thefreedictionary.com/antimacassar |

Re: What was it called?
Before we set off on tour with a Batty Holt's coach we had to change the antimacassa on the top of the seats if they were greasy or dirty from the last customer head.
If I remember correctly ours were white with BH embroidered in them. Coach tours were a bit posh in those days (1965 ish) and before you start we didn't have a horse pulling it. It was a long way to Lake Garda. |
Re: What was it called?
Yes, I remember then too, and you are spot on Margaret, with why they were called AntiMaccassars.
We just called them Chair back covers and my grandma used to crochet her chair back covers.......grandad used to fall asleep in the chair and then walk around with his bald head the same pattern as the covers.......he didn't need the back of his chair protecting...he had no hair(to speak of).......Uncle Harry(his son) had thick dark wavy hair which he would slick down with Brilliantine......a colourless oily liquid that made his hair shine........he was in the RAF........an original Brylcreem boy(except it was Brilliantine). |
Re: What was it called?
My Aunty Macassar had some lovely ones.

Yes, My recollection was the 5mg ones were yellow, but then it all went pear shaped when they started prescribing the generics.......they could be any colour shape or size.......and this would confuse those taking them....who were already confused to start with :)

Re: What was it called?
And what about 'Andrew's Liver salts' Used to love the way they 'fizzed' and I remember drinking quite a lot one day and then having to spend a few days very near to the bathroom!!. Is it true they were a sort of hangover cure?

Yes, but my recollection of Andrews, was you had to drink it all down while it was fizzing....it didn't taste so bad while the fizz was on it, but if the fizz went, it was 'orrible.

Epsom salts
Back in the days when doctors weren't just drug dispensers, I was directed by my doc to take massive doses of Epsom salts in order to stop production of breast milk. The effect of producing liquid diarrheoa for a day caused my breast milk to dry up,(and enabled my return to work) There was no adverse effect from this temporary self induced dehydration. No doubt women are prescribed expensive drugs nowadays to get the same effect. |
Re: What was it called?
Liberty Bodices, anyone rememember them, anyone still wear them, can you still buy them (no not for me Jaysay) I think when I was very young, 6 or 7, I had to wear one??? Was this because Mum had nothing else clean??? :o:confused:
|
Re: What was it called?
Yes, I wore a liberty bodice......with rubber buttons....used to bite bits off the rubber buttons, so my mum replaced them with metal buttons covered in cotton.
I don't wear them now, and I can't say I have seen them advertised anywhere. |

Re: What was it called?
Back in the old days the houses were cold and draughty........bedrooms were akin to fridges. I know that we made ice lollies on the window ledge inside our back bedroom........and although it was as cold as charity, we ate them. Well it's a poor belly that can't warm an ice lolly.
We wore more skins than an onion.......I wore a vest, then a libery bodice and then an underslip then my school shirt, skirt and finally a school jumper or cardigan, which back then was wool.. We wore nearly as many clothes to go to bed in.......Ma used to warm the bed with a couple of bricks which were kept in the bottom of the kitchen range. And they were the good old days! |
Re: What was it called?
I remember wearing a vest then a liberty bodice which my mum had sewn a little pocket into. Because I had asthma a camphor square was put inside the pocket to help me breathe. Everyone at school would shout "Who stinks of Vicks" School days were not my happiest times!!

Re: What was it called?
Yes we had one of those too, but that usually ended up in Ma and Pa's bed....for precisely the reason you stated......it stayed warm for a long time.
Four of us used to sleep in a double bed...two at the top, and two at the bottom(hope you are reading this Mancie - not a typical Tory upbringing is it?)......and we used to have the bed piled up with blankets, candlewick covers(which, I can now admit, I used to pick the candlewick out of) and if it was really cold......Dads greatcoat went on the bed too. No carpets on the floor......cold, cold lino, with a couple of 'rag rugs' down. But hey, I am here to remember it.....so must be made of stern stuff. |

No, they were known as 'coms'......combinations.
They were a combination of vest and long johns and from what I remember they were only worn by the older folk(Unisex too, before unisex was thought of)......liberty bodices were for children |

Re: What was it called?
I loathe using the keyboard. Having 4 semi-numb fingers is a real nuisance.
Also I need to support my head with my left hand to ease my arthritic neck. Today I have discovered the Microsoft On-Screen keyboard, so can type using mouse only - wonderful!. |

You know when you have a "hang-nail" - a loose bit of skin at the side of a finger nail, my aunt used to call it a "stepmother jag". Anyone else heard that? Perhaps it was an old Rishtonian saying.
