Many years ago I used to play domino'es in the now defunct Lion pub in Huncoat. one night an old miner known as Bobby Kennerdy and his mate were discussing these new fangled (cook in a bag) fish.
"The wife gets them for me and they are very tasty", remarked the friend, " I will get her to pick up an extra one for you to try".

After presenteing Bob with the said fish and saying "here try these", he asked the day after what Bobs verdict was; "Bl--dy terrible", was the reply, "I threw them out for the birds and even they wouldn't touch them".

"I put the pan on, waited till the fat got hot and then put the bag in, all that happened was the bag melted and made a right mess of the frying pan, I'll not be having them things again"

I realise this must sound like a joke but I can assure everyone it is perfectly true, I was there at the time.

The grilled ones are suppose to be higher quality but they have many more bones - I prefer the boil in the bag ones - as long as you don't over boil them.

i sold kershaws boil in the bag kippers from a basket in the late 50s/60s, my round was from rawtenstall to bacup every sat night. as soon as the pianist saw me coming into the pub he played cockles and mussels a live a live oh of course it cost me a free bag of prawns. a long walk but happy days

Resurrecting this thread for Bob, don't know if he ever managed to satisfy his craving(for Kippers, I mean!)
Bought some kipper fillets from Morrisons fresh fish counter yesterday. Fried them and they were lovely- nice texture, not salty, lovely taste not too strong and no bones!
We'll definitely have them again, wouldn't touch the boil in a bag rubbish now.
