Stayed for school dinners for a few years, cost five bob a week, a shilling a day. Some were good some were just O.K.. I remember buying a bottle of B top sauce to help some of the dinners. Love the bakewell tart and custard, I remember they made large flats of meat pie with a lovely crust on top but when you flipped the crust it was loaded with onions underneath yuk. Still, can't complain we didn't starve.

The only bit of school dinners I can remember were the Brussels sprouts, boiled for ages until a disgusting mush.
I've hated them ever since.
Oh, and semolina pudding just like lumpy wallpaper paste left in the bucket too long.
The rest must have been OK, at that age you enjoyed eating most things.

OOOOOh that choc pud with pink sauce looks really rummy. That was one of my favourites at school.

Loved them! I remember once in the 60's there was a shortage of spuds so they sent bread and butter instead???? :mad:

Yes, I remember that too. We got great thick slices of bread..but it definitely wasn't butter on it..... It was Summer County marge.

From what I remember of school dinners they were awful,the dinner ladies use to leave the kitchen doors open and the smell is very enticing.
But don't be fooled the food was over cooked to the point of leaving little to no nutritional value....the puddings were ok though.....if you liked semolina ;)

Our school dinners were cooked off the premises and were delivered around 11.30 in large steel containers by cream Bedford vans with the Lancashire red rose logo on the side.
These lunches were also provided to the needy as 'Meals on Wheels'.

Them skoo dinners were cooked in large quantities in the rear of the old St James's Sko in Paradice St.

Yes, they were. I remember once going to the dental clinic on Cannon St and seeing the vans lined up ready to be filled with rice pudding and steaming gravy.

Going to make mince beef pie with mash and peas for dinner
Some ingrediance I did not think would be in this school recipe include celery and marmite
Are you a marmite fan?

Afters will be home made treacle tart with home made custard

No. I don't like either of those ingredients.
I make a mean minced beef and onion pie.......my recipe does not include either of those things...it does have mustard and tomato ketchup in it though...and fresh or dried parsley....and I use red onions.
