I tried one of those optical mouses (mice?????) and didn't like it. Also tried a wireless keyboard at the same time and ended up getting really frustrated with them and plugged my old ones back in!

I've got a wireless keyboard and an optical mouse. The keyboard is so worn now you can't see the letters on it, which is OK for me because I know where they are but it confuses people who have to look at a keyboard in order to type.

The mouse is OK most of the time but it does sometimes develop a mind of its own and the cursor shoots off where you don't want it to go. All fine and dandy unless I'm doing something graphic and delicate.

When I had a mouse with a ball I tended to find the rollers got a bit yucky so I used to clean them with a cotton bud with a drop of isopropanol on it. We always used to use that for cleaning computer bits at work. I have no idea where you can get it from these days on its own but it comes with head cleaning kits and it works wonders. If water won't shift a stubborn bit of muck isopropanol usually works a treat.

Same here Gayle.
I clean my mouse and computer with a baby wipe.

If you have any IPA keep it away from Chav. We used to get it at work but now we get the wipes. Mind you that gel they have on hostpital words would work as well.

Gary, call round sometime when you are passing and I will lend you a wireless optical mouse to try. You will buy one after trying it I am sure. You can sit in bed with your laptop and use the mouse on top of the duvet/sheet.

My lap top is no more, it was too old to take broad band.

Thanks for the offer though.:)

No laptop is 'too old' to take broadband. I can set it up an anything from an old 286(Most of probably don't even know what this is! 286 became 386 became 486 became Pentium became pentium2 became pentium 3 became pentium 4 etc) one if I wanted to

I'm up for the challange. OK to go through my linux box or would you like a direct PPP connection?

How much RAM in it? (K)

Considering we used to connect using modems that you pushed a telephone handset into it should be a piece of cake!

640k I think without checking. And I want to use it as an email server please. It has one of those hard drive that sound like a demented bugie in it, mfm or something I think they were (it is a long time ago and my long term memory is failing due to age and alcohol). Do you have any 8 bit ISA network cards?

Re: Bad mouse.(cleaning)

we have a couple of old 8086's at work which are used to spoof a host(mainframe) response on ATM testing. I'm sure we have some network cards knocking about.

What sort of throughput you looking for? Max attachment size etc? You do realise it will be cli only?
