Vista
Well it's arrived at last, but apparently a lot of us won't be able to use it anyway because our PCs are not up to it.
Does it bother you? Do you want it or are you happy with what you've got? It doesn't seem 5 minutes since I was all excited about Windows98! :D I didn't like ME. I do like XP - so do I stay with what I know or do I desire greater things? |
Re: Vista
Stick with what you've got, vista could be very poor, but expensive replacement.
Windows Vista security under fire |
Re: Vista
I was part of beta testing programme.
My view was that they made it secure by making it so damm annoying. everytime I wanted to do something it was popping up asking if I had permission. In teh end I got so fed up with it I turned it all off, probably making it less secure than ever. Its needs far more resources to run, think 1 gig RAM minimum and a decent 3D graphics card (DirectX9 compatible). I also found (although being beta it may be different in the final release) that even simple programs were being marked as incompatible when you tried to install them. I've just bought a new laptop which as it comes with Media centre I get a free upgrade to Vista Premium edition when its available. I'll probably stick to my nice comfortable Linux and shove the Vista disk in the drawer till SP1 is out (BTW, due September 2007). |
Re: Vista
Seems to be a bit of a thumbs down then.
|
Re: Vista
UMMMMM I was gonna ask about thoughts on this as well because i qualify for the basic vista upgrade apperantly, but im too a bit wary of what to do ....as you all probably have discovered by now my knowledge on pcs is pretty poo.....so i will be keeping my eye on this thread...bye the way Ian is it worth still going an getting the disc??

Here is a Review from the mag Computer active

Re: Vista
No, not entirely. For non technical users I reckon it will be a big improvement from a security perspective. As in those who don't know how to go delbing in teh guts won't work out how to turn all the annoying stuff off that is trying to protect them. The interface is wizzy and may not be to all peoples taste

Re: Vista
Always a good policy never to upgrade MS operating system until it's got to a few versions down the line to iron the bugs out. 10 years is a good measure. :D

fits with the quote "512Mb of memory really is an absolute minimum requirement" In pretty much every review I've seen 1 gig is a recommended minimum, it was certainly my experience that at 512 it ran like a dog, constantly swapping stuff to disk. Top notch hardware is an ambiguous quote but I know a heck of a lot of people with 512 Meg Ram or less. Cherokee, yes, get the disk no matter what, consider using it when the dust has settled after teh first couple of months if no SERIOUS flaws appear |
Re: Vista
I also got a new computer at Christmas and I am entitled to the Premium Upgrade, but it is my intention to wait and see how it works for other users.
|
Re: Vista
just flicking through the channels and vista is now showing on QVC if anyones interested :D

Re: Vista
Here what a friend advised about vista.
Be Carefull what type you get. Vista basic has no aero-glass interface and is crappy, missing most of the nice features of Vista. Buy this only if you get your PC's from Tiny. Vista Home Premium is better, but if you use your PC for any work at all, you're gonna be stuck when your whole company's on Vista and you can't log onto their network using the features only available in Vista Business Vista Business has no media centre stuff, meaning its crap except for boring work. Vista Ultmate is t3h shizzn!t, but costs a bomb. Also, beware of licencing. If you buy an OEM licence at vastly reduced price (I've seen OEM Vista Ultimate for 100 quid on overclockers.co.uk), you can only install it ONCE, and can't upgrade AT ALL (restricted by over-zealous activation) http://www.online-gaming-forums.com/...s/icon_mad.gif Go for the full licence or XP upgrade licence and you can reinstall as many times as you like, upgrade, even move the licence from one computer to another. You will still have to activate each time you do this :@ Also note that unless you have 2GB RAM, Vista spends all its time paging to hard-disc. lol, microsoft... |

For 90% of HOME users premium will be perfectly fine 1 gig RAM is fine for most people, you mate seems to have a very silly view on reality for home users yes, basic is and will be rubbish, stick with XP if this was your only choice Premium - free if you bought media centre, seems like a decent deal and TBH covers most things home users will use. yes, no enterprise stuff but its not used by the people I know at home. Anything else is for business use and probably doesn't interest anyone here. |
Re: Vista
So what happens Ian if you have Premium but bring work home and take it back and the office has Business?
|
Re: Vista
No problem, its just you can't connect to domains with Premium, working on docs is no problem
|
Re: Vista
Hang on! 2gig of ram or this app starts paging the hard disc.. I know its all progress but you can stick it!
|
Re: Vista
So if I had a website do you mean I wouldn't be able to edit it? I'm rapidly going off this vista.
|
Re: Vista
I take it its a newer version of or something like media centre 2005 ed?
|
Re: Vista
I get the feeling this would be more at home in the "real life scams" sticky thread :D
|
Re: Vista
Trouble is that with the buying of new systems poor sods are gonna be lumbered with this vista:(
|
Re: Vista
Maybe there'll be some nice cheap PCs for sale with the good old XP on them?

Im even more sceptical about this vista tho!!! |
Re: Vista
Let me clarify,
1) Willow, no problems, webites are just html docs, domains is a word used more than once in IT, you get used to it after a while 2) 1 gig is enough for vista, yes it hungry and a lot of people don't have 1 gig but to say it needs 2 gig is downright a lie (and you all know how anti M$ I am) 3) yes it teh 'new' version of windows just liek XP was new about 5 years ago 4) it is far more 'secure' than XP and for a non techincal user should protect them a lot more than XP does. However the 'cost' of this is that techie users find it extremely intrusive when you want to do stuff. 5) you only have cover on XP for ~2 more years and then you will be on Vista like it or not, think like you were still using win 95 today, thats what it will be like. the big issues being discussed are HD playback and DRM . now thats is what will be interesting over the next 6 months |

Could you enlighten us lesser beings as to what you actually mean then cos I'm flummoxed. |
Re: Vista
Domain
A website is officially called a 'domain' in Windows, you set up 'domains' which if you like set out boundaries of a certain set of network resources. e.g. in Websphere Applicatin server a domain means something different again I'm sure that there are other uses of 'domain' in IT, i'll thinkj of them later |

Re: Vista
Vista ultimate has like nothing worth the extra £130 .. the few things extra you can get free from 3rd parties anyway..
Hopefully people will start looking at Linux as a real alternative now, Vista takes up a huge amount of resources and really dosn't offer much for the price to say Linux is completely free! |
Re: Vista
The new system was also launched in America yesterday, where it will cost between $100 and $249 (£51 to £127) depending on the sophistication of the version, whereas in this country it will be priced from £100 to £249, almost exactly twice as much.
Can your computer handle Vista? The minimum specifications for a PC that Microsoft claims Vista will run on: • 800MHz processor • 512Mb memory • DirectX9 capable graphics processor For what is called the Premium Ready status, the following is the recommended minimum: • 1Ghz processor • 1Gb memory • 128Mb graphics memory • 40Gb hard drive • DVD-ROM • Internet access To tell if your machine will run the new software, visit www.microsoft.com and download a program which will analyse your computer and offer advice on whether it can handle the new Vista system.:p |
Re: Vista
Looks like teh DRM stuff has pretty much been beaten as well. Things are looking up :D
Bill Gates was asked why its double teh price in teh UK to America. "We try and keep our prices teh same but I haven't been following the currency markets to notice and changes that may have affected this" he says, # Errr..... Bill, its been over $1.90 to the pound for nearly a year now!!! |

Re: Vista
Microsoft has admitted that speech recognition features in Vista could be hijacked so that a PC tells itself to delete files or folders. ....lol
|
Re: Vista
its possible but not really likely. it needs a combination of flaws to take effect, one of which is teh human in charge and in that case every PC has a flaw :D
|
Re: Vista
I wonder if its possible to create music that had the correct frequencies in certain parts to make it sound like somebody was issueing commands, but the human wouldn't know because they'd think it was music?
Possible? |
Re: Vista
nah, sound waves sound the same, Voice recog is bad enough at dealing with accents, never mind music pretending to be speech
|
Re: Vista
Get it free from uni as a computing student so might have a look at it :)

Re: Vista
Just also noticed that "The Cloud" are offering free trials of their WIFI networks to people with Vista.
