Re: norton

I have that problem too...I run on a pre programmed vista and the scanner of norton disrupts activities sometimes when I am wanting to place a late bid on Ebay.
Tried to get shut but the bloody thing will not go away.
I have got sufficient cover with other software....I don't need Norton...any suggestions?

Re: norton

Do the usual uninstall then go to search and do a search for Norton/semantic and delete anything that the uninstall left behind Norton is known to be very hard to get rid of

Thanks Mick...I will try that.

Re: norton

You might even have to go into Program files and find a folder named Norton or Semantic and delete that too but be careful in there deleting the wrong folder could give you more problems.
When i got this new Laptop it had Norton on and it was the first thing i took off

That does'nt work, it leaves traces behind in the registry.
Either use a registry cleaner, or as Mick suggests,
do a search in explorer for any thing that mentions Norton.
Dont just type Norton in the file search box put *.* in
the first line and Norton in the second, search all files in
C: then look carefully at the results.
Write down what the search finds and then look at each of those files,
delete the ones your sure of.

Norton used to be one of the best - it became a monster a few years ago.

Next you will be trying to convince us Linux is totally safe and without malware Ian.

Probably a trial version installed when you bought the PC

Re: norton

I won't let anybody near my PC with Norton or AOL both made a previous PC run like a slug and it was a complete nightmare to get rid of. I use the free AVG

Studio25 11-12-2008 20:12

Re: norton

I just upgraded my sister-in-law's PC by getting rid of Norton. Put AVG on it instead, and it's running twice as fast now...

Re: norton

i had nrton anti-virus installed but then seperate norton came up and it was a virus plus a xp anti virus that was a proper virus a swell the msn anti-virus popped up and that was a virus as well.not too sure but i think i had a dodgy copy of windows and as soon as that genuine valdation downloaded all these things appeared....

entwisi 12-12-2008 07:08

Re: norton

So you weren't sure if it was a dodgy copy? How? either you know its legit( and have a license sticker) or you don't?

And as soon as you tried to validate it you got battered with Viruses...

I don't think even Microsoft would stoop that low! :D

Still, it must be fun having to worry about all this crap....... :rofl38::rofl38::rofl38:

Re: norton

I was using the wife's computer and found that it was running Norton in the taskbar and I presume that she hadn't put it there as I had already set up a clutch of defensive systems to keep her computer clean (including the above-mentioned AVG). Seems weird that Norton suddenly seems to be invading people's computers as I know for a fact it wasn't part of the initial build of that install and no disks have been run in it for a couple of months.

Norton or symatec has been an intergral part of widoze for some years, and it takes some getting rid of.

Since when did Windows come with Norton built in?

It might come installed with a new PC but it is not part of Windows XP

Microsoft would not do that. If you do not have a legit copy it does affect the updates you can download - many of those are security fixes. Maybe that is what you have experianced.

andrewb 14-12-2008 12:51

Re: norton

Norton can come with your computer if your manufacturer puts it on, it is not apart of the Windows package though. If you buy windows separately rather than the manufacturer installing lots of rubbish on, it will not contain Norton.

I agree with you Ian. If you use illegal software you can't complain when the legal owner takes it back from you.

Anyway XP does not stop working. It just nags you about it being a dodgy copy and wont let you download updates for it. Sounds fair enough to me as well.

Anyone got any good reasons why Microsoft should support illegal copies of its software?
