Digital Switchover - ask your Q here

With the imminent switchover I thought I would start a thread where you can ask Q's relating to this major event.

If your not sure how it will affect you or just want to post up what equipment you have (tv, video, dvd recorder etc) and I/others will be happy to recommend what you need to do and how best to do it.

So let the fun begin!

So if we can already record from Sky we're OK?

BTW, Yolande asked a question in Busman's original thread.

yes to a degree you are but you need to think about how you will watch one channel whilst recording another.

Currently if you are recording sky you will probably watch your analogue TV signal or record analogue TV whilst watching Sky. Unless you have a sky+ or two sky boxes you won't be able to do this. One solution is to have a freeview box purely to record from but this won't give you your full sky package. Its possible depending on the equipment to wire it such that you can record from either Sky and freeview and watch the other.

I have a television (in the bedroom) that doesn't have a scart socket. I read somewhere that you can run a freeview box through a video into the television. But not sure how to do this. (I do have a freeview box for another television - so it would be easy to try out - providing I know what to do). Can you give me some idea what I need to be doing.

You need a freeview box that has an RF out to your TV then. Not sure how easy they are too find but the old OnDigital boxes have rf out as I use mine like that.

As you said you could scart the freeview box into a video, then you could record it or watch it through the rf to your TV

I have said rf a few times, this is the normal analog aerial connection into your TV for those not sure.

How about looking into free satellite from sky

freesat from Sky - A new way to get free digital satellite TV

Sounds expensive to me but I can put the dish up etc myself.

Not sure if you can just buy the freesat cards still from Sky. If so all you need is a digibox and dish

Or you could wait for this freesat - the new free HD digital satellite TV service from the BBC & ITV freesat from the BBC and ITV

We switch between October and December 2009. Not long really.

I have 2 hd ready tv's, both are using an indoor aerial, and both have over 90 channels (including radio).

i have a digibox in my bedroom, but like sky, if its peeing down, thats it i cant watch half the channels!
is this to do with my crappy aerial on the roof or my crappy digibox?, cuz its doing my head in!

Digibox I would say, I had the same indoor aerial on the digibox before, and it was always freezing up, hd telly on same aerial, no problem.

If you have a HD TV is it worth connecting it with an HDMI cable, is there a visible difference ?
If it makes a difference then I might get one, they seem pricey though. Cryers in Accy say theirs range from £25 - £100, what would be the justification on going for the more expensive of the two ?

Im normally quite good with stuff like this but the switchover has me baffled. In our house both tvs are hooked up to freeview, does this mean we dont have to change anything? Good advice will be rewarded with karma.
