Ultimate poll - BEST SINGLE OF ALL TIME
okay so after my previous failed attempts at gerrin a little opinion going i've come up with a new idea.
this first poll is an open one - you can contribute whatever song you like to the poll. this first round will close after 1 month and the 10 most popular choices will go through to the second round and so on until we get an eventual winner. so here goes - what's you're favourite single of all time? (the song must have been released as a single so therefore cannot be an album track or an unreleased track from a film/musical) happy voting! |
Re: Ultimate poll - BEST SINGLE OF ALL TIME
...looks like im first up!
im going to vote for Imagine by John Lennon in my opinion this is a timeless song which will always be relevant to present day issues the magic of this song is that it is so simple, no guitars/synths/bass, just a piano churning out that instantly recognisable tune along with the simple lyric. |
Re: Ultimate poll - BEST SINGLE OF ALL TIME
All Lennon's work had simple Lyrics.......

Re: Ultimate poll - BEST SINGLE OF ALL TIME
Shang-a-lang by the Bay City Rollers, because I always sing it when the Glasgow train goes through Cambuslang.

Re: Ultimate poll - BEST SINGLE OF ALL TIME

and we sang shang-a-lang (shudder shudder) as we ran with the gang (shudder shudder) when will you parents think of the children?! will somebody please think of the children!!!! |

There can't be a definitive single of all time, I'm sure we all have lots.
One I really love though is Oh Bondage Up Yours by X-ray Spex, but I also love White Horses by Jackie, and everything by Elvis. |
Re: Ultimate poll - BEST SINGLE OF ALL TIME
has anyone heard 'kiss me deadly' by generation x?

"Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" was a cracker.
But one of the best Beatles Tracks was "Something" written by Harrison. "Something in the way she moves Attracts me like no other lover Something in the way she woos me I don't want to leave her now You know I believe her now" Fantastic lyrics....... |
Re: Ultimate poll - BEST SINGLE OF ALL TIME
Harrison wrote some beautiful songs, 'Something' is a gem

You let your face grow long I am the eggman, they are the eggmen I am the walrus, goo goo goo joob |
Re: Ultimate poll - BEST SINGLE OF ALL TIME
Good Rockin' Tonight - Wynonie Harris. Most of you have never heard it, but a young high school kid in Memphis called Elvis Presley did and it changed the face of popular music.

One of my favourite lyrics has to be from Shed Seven's 'Step Inside Your Love' from the 'Truth Be Told' album, it goes 'you think that you're in love, but you'll get better soon'. That's just sheer class that is, I love it!
|
Re: Ultimate poll - BEST SINGLE OF ALL TIME

Oh no, Bon Jovi's is very different. How's this, 'I guess this time you're really leaving, I heard your suitcase say goodbye'. Definatley not the same song.

aerosmith's 'dream on' is a beute
|
Re: Ultimate poll - BEST SINGLE OF ALL TIME
'buck rogers' by feeder is a brilliant song, its been the biggest student anthem of the past few years without a doubt; the lyrics dont mean a thing but you jus can't help bouncing around to this song, which is why some people love to hate it!
|
Re: Ultimate poll - BEST SINGLE OF ALL TIME
to me that is one of the most difficult questions to answer, woody your choice is brilliant for me,but as i'm a lot older i go back much further like wynonie, probably twilight time- the platters though i occasionally change my mind it was sea cruise-frankie ford a while ago- good thread.

Sweet choice Cashman,
"Heavenly shades of night are falling, it?s twilight time Out of the mist your voice is calling, it?s twilight time When purple-colored curtains mark the end of day I?ll hear you, my dear, at twilight time Deepening shadows gather splendor as day is done Fingers of night will soon surrender the setting sun I count the moments darling till you?re here with me Together at last at twilight time Here, in the afterglow of day, we keep our rendezvous beneath the blue Here in the same and sweet old way I fall in love again as I did then..... But what about "The Great Pretender" or the timeless "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes?" :) There's just for to many to chose from....endless classics |
Re: Ultimate poll - BEST SINGLE OF ALL TIME
listening to The Buzzcocks' 'Ever Fallen In Love?', they were a realy reat band, they had a brilliant hit-making formula of putting a concious lyric together with a hard rocking tune...its the righteous brothers with guitars!!!
pete shelley has a great voice |
Re: Ultimate poll - BEST SINGLE OF ALL TIME
I, too, salute your choices, Mr C, especially Sea Cruise. Just reminded me of another of my contenders - Rockin' Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu by Huey Piano Smith & The Clowns.
|
Re: Ultimate poll - BEST SINGLE OF ALL TIME

Re: Ultimate poll - BEST SINGLE OF ALL TIME
The best Music whatever the genre will leave you elated and uplifted, real music will take you on a journey through life’s great door, you will shed tears of sadness and tears of joy; you will learn the value of love and the passion for the fight. If your down or lost it will pick you up and guide on your way. If you are alone it will consol you, touch you were your soul lives. If you have no music you have no passion. Music will always drive you were you want to go no matter who you are. Apart from the odd ghost, debt and the ex wife it’s the only thing that will haunt you whilst your alive…..

and this is exactly why i am baffled by people who listen to the worst music imaginable; the MCing and hardcore dance music, and listen to this genre constantly; this disease is a particular epidemic in the chav capital that is Accrington. I continue to ask these people where is the soul in this music? how can you honestly say that this is the soundtrack to your life? of course most young people who listen to this music do so not off their own back, but are pressured and bullied into it by the chavs...i've seen this happen all the way through my school career and it is still happening RIGHT NOW  so if there are any parents reading this, please please please - try and educate your children's taste in music - and do not -whatever the risk - let them fall into the trap of chavness, thank you. |

Take the supposed 'biggest band in the world today' Coldplay; winning awards left, right and centre yet their new album just sounds bloated and empty in the sense that none of the tracks say anything to me. Today i listened to The Smiths' debut album, now THAT spoke to me - i suppose its a relation to Morrisey/Marr's lyrics of growing up in the working class north, hmm... But as soon as I find a new band to make me ask questions about myself and life i shall inform you all :D ...in response to your point Doug, i envy you! i don't feel the same excitement/buzz from any other genre!! rock n roll is my life and i suppose always will be, although i do love to chill out to some Joni Mitchell, she hacks into your emotions brilliantly...anyone heard 'the urge for going' by her? (please spare me the poo gags lol) |
Re: Ultimate poll - BEST SINGLE OF ALL TIME
One of my favourite singles is Bohemian Raphodsy - Queen (excuse spelling).

Re: Ultimate poll - BEST SINGLE OF ALL TIME

Now that's a difficult one. I love all the Beatle tunes. Elvis Cliff. Think If I have to choose one it would be Old Shep by the King. |
