Best Guitarist ever?

Who do you think is the greatest ever?

I personally feel Dick Dale is the greatest. Not only is he a great technical player, but he's also a key figure in Rock history. He's unknown to the majority, excluding maybe Miserlou which was on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack and is the backing track to Black Eyed Peas Pump It track.

On top of that, the King of Surf is also still touring, I think he's around 70 years old.

This man deserves recognition! :bow8:

Now for the usual barrage of Jimmy Hendrix ;)

Interesting thread, cus you just know there's never ever going to be just one.
Musically, it's either Johnny Marr or Joe Satriani.
There is nothing they cannot do on a guitar.
However, as Satriani plays the most boring show ever and Marr ain't doing anything these days, for the showmanship etc. I think it's between Jimmy Page, Mark Knopfler and Noel Gallagher (of course :p ).

No, on the first point, Zakk Wylde is a much better player.

On the second point, WHAT!? Since when did playing a load of power chords make a good player? Not only that, but his music is a blatant rip off of Green Day.

Good post, and some great players mentioned. Satriani is an absolutely amazing guitarist!

In the early 70’s, I quite liked Ritchie Blackmore. He played with Deep Purple and then had his own band Rainbow, my favourite album from rainbow has to be Rainbow rising, although I still have one or two Deep Purple LP’s.

I found a couple of rainbow rising sample tracks you can listen too.
I hope they work. hehe

Track 1..... Do you close your eyes

Track 2..... Starstruck

:)

Dave Gilmour, Ritchie Blackmore and as mentioned Johnny Marr, boils down to personal taste and which era (Hank Marvin the best mid-sixties)
I'll go for Dave Gilmour.

Gary Moore, Jimmy Page, Carlos Santana, and of course Bert Weedon.

Re: Best Guitarist ever?

Dick Dale's an excellent choice and Granny Claret has picked a good 'un too with Duane Eddy. However, for me it's a choice between Scotty Moore - he played on the early Elvis sides and practically invented rock guitar playing - and Link Wray - his "Rumble" is one of the most influential instrumentals ever - Townshend, Clapton, Page and many more all cite it as a major influence.

For me even though he is not fully accomplished, Neil Young. Seen him several times and what he does, he does brilliantly.

I agree with Johnny Marr and Jimmy Page of course. Would also like to add Pete Townsend and The late Chuck Wagon.

Ahh, Link Wray, another cracking reference. Very influential, and, in many peoples views (including myself) single handedly invented the power chord.

Nice to see my thread has brought a plethora of guitarists names. Also nice to see some of the less known, but more influential players, like Link Wray, brought up.

Glad I started the thread now :)

Okay, i originally said Hendrix, which was a bit obvious. But he did play a right handed guitar left handed(thus upside down),played rythmn & lead whilst only backed by bass & drums, and threw in vocals as well.If i had to vote for someone not so obvious it would have to be Will Seargent of the Bunnymen, just for the amazing & slightly trippy left field solos he did on the albums "Crocodiles","Heaven Up Here"&"Porcupine".

Underated Influential guitarists I would like to see mentioned would be Robbie Krieger and Sterling Morrison.

For technical brilliance though I would have to stick with the late great Chuck Wagon of the Dickies. Tony Iommi himself could not believe how fast he played Paranoid without missing a note.

Personally i admire the likes of 'the edge' from u2 class guitar rifts & distinct to u2 sound i could listen to him solo, as is Brian May again another class distinct guitarist:D

But then for variation of guitar play would be George Harrison turning his hand from guitar to the Sitar which brought the beatles the experimentation of sound in the late 60's.

Yeah I forgot all about Hillage - still going strong. Met him at a Manchester Megadog all-nighter about 10 years ago, nice bloke... good tunes.

But Zappa has got to be one of the greatest - taught little Stevie Vai all he knows ;P

Also, if you expand the brief to include bass guitarists (especially if you consider 6-string bass players), squarepusher's pretty good... check this out

Johnny marr ( by far not the best, but god damn good! ) him being mentioned isnt a suprise, though anything other than the smiths of his i find quite boring...

mark kozelek/mark eitzel are my favourite guitarists, but not the best by all means.

others

ry cooder, jeffrey lee pierce, bert janch, david rawlings( This guy rocks! ), kid congo powers, jeff buckley

Malmstien and Satriani would be better if they didn't disappear up their own a**es half the time. Being technically awesome is one thing, playing only to your own ego is another.

Nice one, Mr C, I'd forgotten all about him!

Here's the guy who first introduced the electric guitar to blues (and therefore, ultimately rock music) - T-Bone Walker. Every single electric guitarist who has come along since from Hank Marvin to Clapton to the latest heavy metal kid on the block owes a debt to him. See, you don't have to play loud to be good!

I've seen many of the guitarists mentioned on this thread over the years, but the best must surely be the late Stevie Ray Vaughn. When I saw him in Manchester in the 80s he was immense. I know he modelled himself on Hendrix, but he did so much with a guitar that it could make you weep.

According to a guns and roses biography I read Joe Perry is the reason Slash started playing the guitar! Fantastic guitarist and even better live! (monsters of rock, Donnington '94)
