Best Guitarist ever?
Who do you think is the greatest ever?
I personally feel Dick Dale is the greatest. Not only is he a great technical player, but he's also a key figure in Rock history. He's unknown to the majority, excluding maybe Miserlou which was on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack and is the backing track to Black Eyed Peas Pump It track. On top of that, the King of Surf is also still touring, I think he's around 70 years old. This man deserves recognition! :bow8: Now for the usual barrage of Jimmy Hendrix ;) |
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
Interesting thread, cus you just know there's never ever going to be just one.
Musically, it's either Johnny Marr or Joe Satriani. There is nothing they cannot do on a guitar. However, as Satriani plays the most boring show ever and Marr ain't doing anything these days, for the showmanship etc. I think it's between Jimmy Page, Mark Knopfler and Noel Gallagher (of course :p ). |
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
Randy Rhoades is my first choice and Tom Delonge is my second.anyone agree?
|
Re: Best Guitarist ever?

On the second point, WHAT!? Since when did playing a load of power chords make a good player? Not only that, but his music is a blatant rip off of Green Day. |

Re: Best Guitarist ever?
In the early 70’s, I quite liked Ritchie Blackmore. He played with Deep Purple and then had his own band Rainbow, my favourite album from rainbow has to be Rainbow rising, although I still have one or two Deep Purple LP’s.
I found a couple of rainbow rising sample tracks you can listen too. I hope they work. hehe Track 1..... Do you close your eyes Track 2..... Starstruck :) |
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
Dave Gilmour, Ritchie Blackmore and as mentioned Johnny Marr, boils down to personal taste and which era (Hank Marvin the best mid-sixties)
I'll go for Dave Gilmour. |
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
Gary Moore, Jimmy Page, Carlos Santana, and of course Bert Weedon.
|
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
Dick Dale's an excellent choice and Granny Claret has picked a good 'un too with Duane Eddy. However, for me it's a choice between Scotty Moore - he played on the early Elvis sides and practically invented rock guitar playing - and Link Wray - his "Rumble" is one of the most influential instrumentals ever - Townshend, Clapton, Page and many more all cite it as a major influence.
|
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
Got to agree with the last three posts. I must be starting to get old in the head most of these names seem to be long lost to the past. Maybe it's time to drag those old black disks out of my mothers loft.
|
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
Peter Green, Carlos Santana, BB King,
Gotta be JOHN SQUIRE of the stone roses and the seahorses all day long for me! |
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
For me even though he is not fully accomplished, Neil Young. Seen him several times and what he does, he does brilliantly.
I agree with Johnny Marr and Jimmy Page of course. Would also like to add Pete Townsend and The late Chuck Wagon. |

Nice to see my thread has brought a plethora of guitarists names. Also nice to see some of the less known, but more influential players, like Link Wray, brought up. Glad I started the thread now :) |

Re: Best Guitarist ever?
Okay, i originally said Hendrix, which was a bit obvious. But he did play a right handed guitar left handed(thus upside down),played rythmn & lead whilst only backed by bass & drums, and threw in vocals as well.If i had to vote for someone not so obvious it would have to be Will Seargent of the Bunnymen, just for the amazing & slightly trippy left field solos he did on the albums "Crocodiles","Heaven Up Here"&"Porcupine".

Re: Best Guitarist ever?
When starting out I used videos of the Beatles to pick up George Harrison's style. Helped a lot. He was one of my favourites also. RIP.
|
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
Underated Influential guitarists I would like to see mentioned would be Robbie Krieger and Sterling Morrison.
For technical brilliance though I would have to stick with the late great Chuck Wagon of the Dickies. Tony Iommi himself could not believe how fast he played Paranoid without missing a note. |
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
My 2 peneth is
Steve Hackett or Steve Vai Maybe thats why I am rubbish ?? I aint called Steve ??? |
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
They say that guy from Celtic Cross is pretty nifty and also very handsome!!:D
But I heard he favours Dave Edmunds and if you`ve ever heard Sabre Dance by Love Sculpture you`ll know why. Huw Lloyd Langton or Steve Hillage when your Trippin. Albert Lee can Flippin go some. East Bay Ray And Definitely Stuart Adamson, RIP Add `em all together Whaddya get ? Zero:Banane04::thefinger Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha |
Re: Best Guitarist ever?

Re: Best Guitarist ever?
Frank Zappa
No Question, Shut up and play you Guitar |
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
im bein 100% serious here but its definately prince.
anyones who wants to question this watch this link YouTube - Gently Weeping Prince |
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
Personally i admire the likes of 'the edge' from u2 class guitar rifts & distinct to u2 sound i could listen to him solo, as is Brian May again another class distinct guitarist:D
But then for variation of guitar play would be George Harrison turning his hand from guitar to the Sitar which brought the beatles the experimentation of sound in the late 60's. |
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
Yes Prince Is Good,
Better than a lot of people may think,he would be in my top ten I like John Butler from the John Butler Trio, Have a listen to Betterman. Also Tommy Emanuel. Is a Great guitarist. |
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
people think prince is a little midget pop singer, but the man is a genius on the guitar.
|
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
He is also responsible for me spending 2 of the most boring hours of my life at wembley arena.  :swear8: :bangh8:
Mind you this was when he just changed his name to symbol and refused to play any old stuff. It was **@!£$ tedious though. Just thought of an awesome guitarist who very rarely gets a mention and that is Bob Mould. (Just listen to Land Speed Record or Warehouse Songs and Stories by Husker Du). |

Re: Best Guitarist ever?
Perhaps Jeff Hanneman from Slayer for the best dirty, funky, dark riffs after Black Sabbath. heh :D
Yeah I forgot all about Hillage - still going strong. Met him at a Manchester Megadog all-nighter about 10 years ago, nice bloke... good tunes. But Zappa has got to be one of the greatest - taught little Stevie Vai all he knows ;P Also, if you expand the brief to include bass guitarists (especially if you consider 6-string bass players), squarepusher's pretty good... check this out |

Re: Best Guitarist ever?
i wont say "best" guitarist.... really good guitarists known for **YAWN** solos **/YAWN** bore the hell out of me. I tend to lean towards the singer songwriter types...
Johnny marr ( by far not the best, but god damn good! ) him being mentioned isnt a suprise, though anything other than the smiths of his i find quite boring... mark kozelek/mark eitzel are my favourite guitarists, but not the best by all means. others ry cooder, jeffrey lee pierce, bert janch, david rawlings( This guy rocks! ), kid congo powers, jeff buckley |

Re: Best Guitarist ever?
Obviously none of you have ever heard Yngwie J Malmstien, how anyone can compare Johnny Marr or Gallagher to him is ..well....laughable
you might wanna check out Django Rheinhardt, very good considering he only had a couple of fingers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMLzK_w6ZeM Why not have a look at Nuno Bettencourt http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qS9q4vrN_04 to top it all have a look at Alexander Vynograd nuff said Gallagher, don't make me larf |

Malmstien and Satriani would be better if they didn't disappear up their own a**es half the time. Being technically awesome is one thing, playing only to your own ego is another.
Still rate Sterling Morrison and Chuck Wagon above them. (Still love the cover for Surfing With the Alien though :0. ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsNO7KPijSE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4pfPIKJr68 |

well im gonna go for kurt cobain
|
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
Kurt Cobain was not a great guitarist at all.
He could write a great tune don't get me wrong - I love the pre-nevermind stuff - but a great musician? Nah. |

Very skilled guitarist but the Use Your Illusion stuff wrecked it for me; too many songs with 14 guitar solos. I like Velvet Revolver though. |

Looks like it depends on which bio you read.
I remember being told by a mate who lived in one of the pottery towns (possible Newcastle or Stoke) when Appetite came out that Slash was from Stoke, just took it that he was born there. |
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
Suppose it may be down to urban myth as far as the internet is concerned.
Doesn't matter where he was born anyway; he's a brilliant guitarist. |

Re: Best Guitarist ever?
Nice one, Mr C, I'd forgotten all about him!
Here's the guy who first introduced the electric guitar to blues (and therefore, ultimately rock music) - T-Bone Walker. Every single electric guitarist who has come along since from Hank Marvin to Clapton to the latest heavy metal kid on the block owes a debt to him. See, you don't have to play loud to be good! |
Re: Best Guitarist ever?
I've seen many of the guitarists mentioned on this thread over the years, but the best must surely be the late Stevie Ray Vaughn. When I saw him in Manchester in the 80s he was immense. I know he modelled himself on Hendrix, but he did so much with a guitar that it could make you weep.
