He hasn't got an ounce of talent but he's a "figurehead" because he acts like a pratt and, sadly, in modern day Britain, that's a quality which is admired by certain sections of the population (which is why the Gallaghers and the Sex Pistols before them became so popular).

Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?

The reason why The Sex Pistols, Oasis & The Libertines became so popular was bacause of their honest & fresh attitudes to music rising above the popmous over inflated prog rock, radioheads and coldplays of this world.
I'm sorry you think that way Wynonie but The Libertines' first album 'Up The Bracket' and their brilliant gigs were the reasons why Doherty was thrown into stardom, not because of his tabloid antics.
Pete Doherty started using after Up The Bracket went massive & consequently the second album & anything he's done since has been rubbish, except for the charity single he's released when clean (cover of The Clash's Janie Jones).

Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?

There were plenty of other alternatives to prog rock in the late '70's. Doctor Feelgood, Eddie & the Hot Rods and the whole pub rock scene, for instance, musically in similar territory to the Sex Pistols, but infinitely superior. But because they didn't swear on TV or wear swastika t-shirts, they didn't make it as big. I admit, I don't know as much about the early 90's scene, but I'm willing to bet there were plenty of alternatives to Oasis who were much better...but again, no hype, no controversy, no popularity.

As for Pete Doherty, I reckon Garinda summed it all up very neatly way back near the start of this thread:

Garinda was talking about Babyshambles, Doherty's drugged up Libertines gimmick act.

The Libertines were much better musically and lyrically than any other band to emerge in the 21st century, and it's a poor do Doherty's idiocy spiralled to the pit of tabloid junk that it did.

Don't get me wrong I'm not standing up for his drug use at all, any person that gets involved in skag or crack/cocaine is a fool in my mind, I'm just defending Doherty's musical abilities when clean, because to me when he is clean, he is brilliant.

I agree the Libertines were good, but not much better or worse than a lot of other bands that were/are around. Doherty for me certainly hasn't pushed any musical or artistic boundaries.

Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?

The Libs may not have pushed any musical boundaries in a technical sense but if not for them there would hardly be any new bands coming through at the moment. Before them, new british guitar music was dead & now there's new bands popping up everywhere boasting of the Libs' influence.

Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead? was the choice shaker, to me to call an artist genius merits a little bit more than doherty has acheived,so the choice was easy for me- talentless smackhead. the libertines did record some half decent stuff at the begining but genius? sorry mate.

Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?

I don't think he's a genius at all.
Johnny Cash was a genius.
Ray Davies is a genius.
Doherty is a fool, but did make great music with The Libs.

The talentless little Google Page Ranking!ck is only missing out on an ASBO then he can truely be considered a figurehead for his generation.

Whilst the Red-Top rags are fuelling him with the oxygen of publicity, he will, unfortunately, be around for a little while longer. That is unless he has the misfortune to come across some pure Columbian marching powder, which may remove him permenantly from being a talentless source of irritation!

I dont think he is a genius or talentless. I thought the Libertines were excellent and their material deserves a chance. The drug taking however has had a negative effect on Pete's talent and the publicity he gets doesn't help.

The other half of the Libs, Carl Barat, now fronts Dirty Pretty Things and their 1st album is excellent - if you watched "Sorted" when it was on you would have heard "Bang Bang You're Dead" by DPT (theme tune)

This clown Docherty likes to drink in various boozers down here in the East End. He was in a gents bog a week or so ago having a wee, when a mate of mine walked in & pi**ed in the back of his right ankle boot. He didn't notice, although I suspect Kate may have done later.
