Ossy school girl bitch.

Just trawling through Google images, I came across a photograph from a concert at OswaldtwistleTown Hall in 1978, which I was actually at.

Ah, those were the days.

New wave concerts, and it was only a month or saw after we had a touring professional company putting on the Tempest, then there was the contemporary dance troupe.....happy days.

Still we can look forward to a Robbie Williams licky-likey, and the umpteenth reincarnation of The Drifters.

I too was "attracted" by the title and Garinda's authorship. Was wondering what the Roo ster had got himself into now. Was even more apprehensive when I saw the picture loading.

Was kinda hoping it were to be a cute little lass just out of school walking with her female dog followed by a load of puppies!

I remember Doc Talbot,or Tolly before he became a punk,We went out with a couple of girls, who were mates,at the same time.Went to see The Stranglers with him as well in Manchester.Never saw much of him after he hit the big time:rolleyes: I think the drummer with the blond hair was called Paul Millock, but could'nt swear on it.I also thought a lad called Roddy Fitton was in the band but i might be mistaken there as no-one in the photos looks like him.

Yep, Paul Milek was the drummer, he was poached from The Cybermen, a far superior band. Lead singer was Nigel McHugh or Nick Name as he was styled. His brother Malcolm brought a load of their singles into school to sell. I bought one and it was rubbish. I don`t think Roderick Fitton was involved. Far too posh!

Also saw another local punk band, The Stiffs, play at the Town Hall, which I think was in 1979.

One local band I can recommend is 'The Itch'.They play thier own stuff as well as some covers of 'The Jam' and a lot of Irish new wave/punk stuff like 'The Undertones' and 'Stiff Little Fingers'.The lead singer was Pat Gallagher from up Ossy, not sure if he is back with them as he did leave due to family commitments, but heard a rumour he may have gone back with them.I have thier album named 'Ave Parade' in my CD collection as well as a single they released a number of years ago which was a cover of 'Secret Affairs''Time for Action' who appeared with them at Accy town Hall a few years ago which me a Tinks went to watch. It was quite a good gig:)

My name is Nigel McHugh aka Kestrel X and the photo in question was I think 25th September 1978. Us Schoolgirl BItch supporting China Street. Good gig that was. The face in the picture (circled) is Mark Buroughs anyone remember Mark - he died of a drugs overdose in early 1980's!

Roddy Fitton if it's the same person? didn't play with us but came to a fair few of our gigs and so it goes!

Here is one of my brother Philip McHugh!!!!!!!!:egged::theband:

Yes, it's a shame he did that. He should have stuck to music. Did you ever see Motorhead at Accy Town Hall in 1976 and Buzzcocks at Mecca in Blackburn in 1977 - my brother was the person behind promoting those gigs as he worked for the Students Union and put those bands on!

Sadly I was too young to see the Buzzcocks then, as I was only twelve in '77.:(

I do remember seeing your brother out and about, but it was a few years later.

I doubt I'd be able to be much use, as I was only eleven in '76.

Now if you were writing a book on post punk freaks, I'd be able to supply lots of information about the scene up here in the eighties.:D

Seriously, I'm sure Kestrelx would have much more information regarding the bands who formed the punk circuit in this part of the world.

Good luck.:)

I was really too young to be a real punk. By the time I was fifteen I'd moved onto my next guise.

I'm sure someone like Kestrelx would be much more useful to know, as he was older, and much more on the local scene than I ever was.

I saw this band at the time, somewhere local. I must have bought their single (possibly at a gig). I'm glad I did, as just a year or two back, I was selling a lot of my old Punk singles on eBay and got about £40 for the Schoolgirl Bitch 45. It was in mint condition, as I must have played it at the time and thought ''this is crap'' and stored it away, never to be played again. I did play it through just before I stuck it on eBay and it was still crap (lol) No offence to the band members if they read this.

Apparently, it's a punk rarity and quite sought after, so if you know someone with a copy, tell 'em I'll give them a fiver for it.

I saw the Buzzcocks at the Mecca. You're right, it was a Students Union do (a Thursday night, I think) and the main band was another Manchester band, Sad Cafe. They played on the stage (which wasn't much of a stage in the Mecca) and the Buzzcocks played on the floor, in front of the stage. I went to see the Buzzcocks, as I was quite into punk back then (still am, to a lesser extent).

We supported the Buzzcocks at one gig at the Mecca - I'm not sure if they did two, 1st one in 76 then the 2nd one in 77? I think we did the 2nd one.

Well at least John Peel played it on Radio One several times - so it can't have been that bad. I think one sold with the original sleeve for well over £200:00 on Ebay, not sure of the exact amount. I sold one on Ebay with out the original sleeve, but with the second sleeve for about £150:00.

Just came across some more information about The Cybermen, and their record label, Rockaway.

This British punk band released two 7" records on their own Accrington-based Rockaway label: The Cybermen EP (1978, aka Cybernetic Surgery) and the double A-side You're to Blame/It's You I Want (1979). Their songs boast intelligent lyrics, well-performed vocal harmonies and catchy riffs, but little is known about the group besides the line-up: Ian P Dixon (Bass/Vocal), Paul Milek (Drums) and Roger Entwistle (Guitar/Vocal). Because of their name, some record dealers will attempt to charge ludicrous amounts of money for these records, but they're worth hearing should you find someone selling them at an honest price!

You saw her last weekend
"I'm with someone new"
She looked over at you and then she smiled
You said that you loved her
She said she loved you
Now it looks like she's been tellin' lies

You thought that
She was different, she wasn't like the rest
She was beautiful and so innocent
But now it
Seems she's messed you around just like a fool
And now you know
You're to blame

Took her to the pictures
"I'm with all the crowd"
Sure knew how to treat her so right
Took her to the dances
Music playin' loud
Then you'd always walk her home at night
Every night you lay awake
Thinkin' about her
Sleepless nights are full of memories
You know that you will never forget her
And your eyes are clouded with tears

Now you are so lonely
Nothing else to do
You just have to think of her and then
What you did starts comin' back
What she did to you
Then you know you won't get fooled again

Oh yeah
You're to blame

That's what I said
You're to blame

You're such a fool
You're to blame

The You're to Blame single came with a "Free Info Pack", a sheet of typed and signed A4 paper that revealed that the band had been quiet since their first release (which apparently John Peel had "loved... needless to say") owing to the "unfortunate 'borrowing" of most of their equipment"! The sheet suggested a number of Things You Can Do To Help:
  • 1. If you like the record (even if you don't) please send a letter to John Peel or any other D.J. and request the record.
    2. Tell all your friends to buy a copy (direct from us at £1.00 plus a 12p stamp for post and package) or from your nearest alternative record shop.
    3. Write to music papers asking for articles about us.
    4. Let your next door neighbours hear it (through the walls).
    5. Send us blank cheques and charitable donations!

I was at the Lodestar the Thursday night the Boomtown Rats played. It was actually their first gig on the mainland, having only really played Dublin before then. They turned up, but the majority of their gear was held up for some reason. They still played a set, but used Demolition's gear. They promised they would return on the Saturday with their own gear and that any of us with a ticket would get in free. They were true to their word and played an even better set on the Saturday. Those are the only two occasions they played the Lodestar and the support over both nights was Demolition (I knew Paul Davies and Windy a little at the time, both members of Demolition).

Not sure were he's got the idea that his band supported them. I still have the poster from that gig and it states Demolition as the support. Like I say, I was there and have no recollection at all of a third band being there.

I think some people invent their own versions of history.

Demolition were support. Just rang an old mate who was with me that night. He agrees with me, he's adamant there was no other band there, either the Thursday or the Saturday.

Stiletto Skid were the first punk band in Blackburn (formed early 1977), before Demolition and before the Stiffs, but true to form, like a lot of punk bands at the time, they played two gigs in Darwen (well Chapels) and one in either the Windsor Hall or Regency Hall (below King Georges) and then split up.
