Hope this works-
This was my first record(Diana second) and I still love it,1957!Dad got me a turntable in a box which he wired into the radio somehow. The deckhad a STEEL needle so the records didn't last very long when played several times a day.
Still got the two records, you can hardly hear the songs but the scratches are lovely.

No television then so hadn't seen that show/video. If I had I probably wouldn't have bought the record! They're terrible.Acts/shows and videos have certainly improved since then.

...and they're on at the Darwen Jazz & Blues Festival at the Millstone Pub on Aug 6th. Actually, this festival looks pretty promising, featuring the Swing Commanders - top Western Swing band who give a brilliant live performance (just ask Cashy!) and the Soul Train who play 60's/Motown/Northern Soul. Sounds like a good do! :)

A prophet without honour in his own land...J.J. Barnes, who recorded for the small Detroit label Ric-Tic in the mid-60's. The label was taken over by the mighty Motown corporation and J.J.'s Ric-Tic labelmate, Edwin Starr went on to fortune and fame. J.J. however was left in the shadows, some say because his voice sounded far too similar to Marvin Gaye's. However, then something strange happened...his records like the one here began to be played thousands of miles away from Detroit in clubs in Manchester, Blackpool, Stoke and Wolverhampton. J.J.'s career was saved and he went on to become a bona fide Northern Soul legend who has toured the North and Midlands many times. Northern Soul doesn't get any better than this. :cool:

Loved the Feelgoods (RIP Lee). Saw them live a couple of times, absolutely brilliant. I spent hours trying to play the riff to 'She Does it Right' like Wilko.

Here's another great British R & B band. Camera keeps focusing in on Brian all the time, but Keith plays lead throughout.

Superb choice, Dave, and here's another one from Bobby. Saw him live at Colne Municipal Hall in the 90's - he was great. But then saw him again at the House of the Blues in New Orleans in 2002 and he was absolutely phenomenal. Think the difference was he was playing in front of his own people with an 80% black audience who'd travelled from as far away as Texas just to see him and were determined to make a party of it. Probably the best live show I've ever seen! :cool:
