I think I'm going to throw a poem into the mix. After all, as the man said: "Arma virumque cano.":D Not really a wander ... a mere mixing of the muses.:D

Not so much a favourite more an example of how politicians are prepared to waste the youth of their nations:-

Paul Hardcastle - Nineteen - YouTube

This one, Camouflage, this to me just shows how gung ho propaganda can be hidden in a popular song.

Stan Ridgway - Camouflage - YouTube

Yes, I do consider myself anti-war, but not anti-servicemen, a force that should only be used when there honestly is no alternative.

I once gave some thought to the question: Why was there so much poetry that came out of WWl, and so little from WWll? The only one that comes to mind is Randall Jarrell's "The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner."

Paul Fussell's "The Great War and Modern Memory" provides some "answers", if answers there are. I found the chapter, "Oh What a Literary War" particularly interesting.

Funny the things we think about as we wait, and wait, and wait, and wait for Spring;)

WASTE

Waste of Muscle, waste of brain,
Waste of Patience, waste of Pain,
Waste of Manhood, waste of Health,
Waste of Beauty, waste of Wealth,
Waste of Blood, and waste of Tears,
Waste of Youth’s most precious years,
Waste of ways the Saints have trod,
Waste of Glory, waste of God – War!

This hard-hitting poem was published by the Rev. Geoffrey Studdert-Kennedy in 1919. Born of Dublin and Monaghan stock, he was rather better known as 'Woodbine Willie'.

The Soldier - The Sacrifice of the British Army in Ulster - YouTube - "The Soldier" A pretty heart rending song, somewhat haunting. I remember this from my time.

Copy and paste the YouTube address (situated at the top of the page, when you've found the song you want on YouTube) into the address tab that opens when you click the 'world with a link icon' in your reply.
Hope this helped :)
