Friday Night Kick Off

What are peoples thoughts on the Club bringing forward the Matchday to a Friday Night? For me, I will only be bothered when I'm working a Friday night shift and have to miss the match - I miss nearly all midweek games due to work. Although, it will feel really strange, I remember the Saturday just gone - I was shopping in town and saw lots of Stanleyites - Sam, Diane, Sarah etc Think we were all lost without our Saturday Football Fix...

YTo be honest i dont really care...if it is benefitial to the club then go for it! if it proves that when burnley and rovers are playing next day that it doesnt improves attendence move it back.... but we should really give it a go!

Re: Friday Night Kick Off

Well we had good attendance last friday nite & the crowd were up for it, i know a few of us said it should happen on a friday nite more often - a much better alternative to pubbing it in town - much better :) LOL!!! But i think cos more people were able to attend than they would cos of work.

personally, its a good idea cos I will be able to get to more games. From a happy campers point of view then if your missus or Mr doesn't go to football then they will appreciate you being around on saturday afternoon. Beyond that I feel there is more of a sense of occasion during night matches. When its cold and everybody is dancing on tiptoes to keep warm, then all of a sudden a bit of incident on the field and the crowd goes mad, shouting and screaming at number 5 (always number 5), before you know you have warmed up.

You know you can go and have your friday drink afterwards without feeling remorse for going home sozzled again. Also, the crisp night air seems to carry any noise a wee bit better. Friday nights at the Sophia Khan end will be next years black.

Roll on the good times!

OK for a one off but a complete and utter non-starter for me on a regular basis. Saturday without football at 3.00 pm is awful. Just consider all the missing millions in league football because of the messing about with kick-off times for increasingly ruddy boring TV. Don't lets prostitute ourselves for a few extra quid.
Yours passionately,

E-mailed the above to "opinion@...."

I don't mind the occasional friday night match. It makes a nice change. I know Eric was considering 3 or 4 matches for the rest of the season which doesn't sound to bad to me. The atmosphere was good on friday but whether that would carry through to more frequent fri night matches I have no idea!!

I think the above statement epitomises the delusions that many Stanley fans are suffering from. It's not a case of making "a few extra quid" - it's a case of generating the income that is so essential if we are mount a credible promotion challenge. Eric has already said that he is "gutted" by this season's gates (prior to Friday) and that gates need to improve if we are to become a football league side. Does anybody seriously think that we can carry on signing and paying quality players if the gates stay at the 1,100 mark?

Personally, Friday night matches cause me all sorts of hassle and I agree with Redraine that it's just not the same as a 3.00pm Saturday kick-off. However, I would happy for every single one of our remaining home matches to be played on Friday nights if I thought that we could get an extra 500 on the gate!

Personally, I enjoyed the change to Friday night although I will admit to feeling a little lost on Saturday. Obviously it's not gonna be every week as the other club would have to agree and I can't see many southern clubs wanting to travel up here on a Friday but I think a few Friday matches scattered through the season is a good idea

Re: Friday Night Kick Off

I remember that back in our later Football League days, when we were struggling to get people through the turnstiles, the Stanley board approached Blackburn and Burnley with a view to ask for their co-operation. The suggestion was that they might consider scheduling their matches to be home and away on the same Saturdays, with our home fixtures on their away days. They both declined, saying it was a matter of "self preservation", but maybe this is an idea which could be floated again. I can't imagine that there would be the same resistance to the idea these days - what does anybody think?
By the way, didn't Tranmere at one time play their home matches on Fridays, so as not to clash with the Merseyside giants? I think the novelty must have worn off, as I think it would for us!

Stanley did play some matches on a Friday night when we were in the Football League. Tranmere did play on a Friday night, Bury used to play some matches on a Friday night and I think Stockport did also.

Re: Friday Night Kick Off

friday night match ok as a one off, but not a regular occasion. Saturday is the accepted footy day,to most people, and it would not affect me attending Fri or Sat. I just feel that as a novelty,it would work but not regularly. What about now coming up to the festive season, when a lot of works parties are held on a Fri, and then people would get fed up on a Sat without footy and may even change to one of the other clubs, nmot far away. So as a special occasion ok, there is a novelty factor but in the long run I don't think the gates would increase long term.

I loved the Friday night game. It set me up nicely for the weekend !!! You can't beat a night game with the floodlights on, you spend all day at work just waiting for the game. It just seems to be a better atmosphere.

I'm kinda biased though, I work for a Premiership club's TV channel so spend most weekends at work. A lot of the time i'm filming the Under 18's Academy on a Saturday when I should be at Stanley...... how bad is that ?!?

Complete non-starter.

The Blackburn & Burnley fixtures are co-ordinated at police request so that only one team plays at home on the same day/weekend.

I am a complete layman as far as police matters are concerned, but why is it a complete non- starter? How do Blackburn and Bolton, or Blackburn and Preston manage to play at home on the same day? What's the difference?

Blackburn and Preston also have a 'fixed' schedule so that they don't play at home on the same day apart from the occasional match where it is unavoidable (e.g. Preston playing Burnley). Regarding teams that are in close proximity and come under the same Constabulary, leagues do take into account the requests of the police when they set the fixture schedule.

As for Bolton, I would have thought that the restriction would be in relation to Wigan games.

Well, the Forest Green fixture has now been moved to a Friday (November 18th). Seems like the majority of fans were in favour.

Well heres to a night out after the FGR game on Friday 18th Nov!

Few drinks in the Club House after the game, then a couple in town - beats a full night down Acc! Just fingers crossed that these Friday night games dont clash with my roster...

if there is a "novelty aspect" does this not suggest that extra bums will be on seats. If the novelty wears off then at least we have had the money from the excess novelty punters. And, hopefully many may stay anyway.

Having read the forum above, it seems to me that the biggest moan from the Hereford fans is that Accrington are 'choosing their own kick off times' which will give them an unfair advantage.

From what I can gather, Accrington are not choosing or imposing their own kick off times on other clubs as its being implied, but are merely suggesting the Friday night alternative to other clubs. Accrington cannot go ahead unless they have the agreement of the away team plus the Conference / FA and the police. I also dont think that they are suggesting every match should be played on a Friday night, as this would naturally be extremely unfair on fans living more than a couple of hours drive from the ILS and who would be forced to take time off work in order to follow their own team.

It appears that some Hereford fans on that forum have started bleating before they have read or understood the facts. They also disregard the fact that they themselves dont have to compete for paying fans against a number of Premiership and Championship clubs, as Accrington do, so what harm can it do if Accrington ask for other teams assistance to help them maximise their income levels through the turnstiles. Given that the likes of Stevenage and Grays, Gravesend and Exeter only ever take a handful of travelling fans with them anyway, surely the benefits for Accrington and their fans (the extra few hundred on the gate) outweigh the inconvenience of the travelling few.

I dont think it was about the novelty wearing off. When Tranmere were playing on Fridays they were a (old) third or fourth division club, whilst Liverpoool and Everton were dominating the first division and Europe. Also, Goodison and Anfield still had terracing at that time so more fans from the Wirrall area could get to see those two teams.

Tranmere's progression into the old 2nd division coincided with the Merseysiders being banned from European competition, plus the all seater ruling meant their ground capacities were slashed. Therefore, being unable to get into Goodison or Anfield, a lot of fans took the alternative of going to Prenton Park.

With the bigger attendances at Prenton, the police decided it was easier for them to manage the games on a Saturday so they refused to allow Tranmere to continue playing on Fridays.

It just makes me wonder though if our local police would adopt the same attitude to Friday night games should the gates go up at the ILS.

Both clubs have to agree so what's he moaning about?

Re: Friday Night Kick Off

First I would like to thank Ex Landlord for showing a balanced view on his own forum....

Secondly, as you pointed out on there. Any games changed to Friday are with the agreement of the other team and the conference. The forest green game has now been changed to a friday night but then so has the away match. So Forest green are obviously keen to give it a go.

It is never stanley's view to go for all matches fri night but just a few throughout the season. This allows some people to attend who can't on a saturday. And if it helps increase attendances and along with it bring in some extra cash into the club then GO FOR IT!!

Personally I would not like to see all matches changed to friday (and don't believe that would ever happen) as I am also one of those who traditionally like the 3pm saturday KO but have no problems with the occasional fri night match, the same as we have occasional mid week matches..... this would go for home and away!!!

To have some of the fans on your forum bleating on about how we are trying to change the face of traditional footy is a load of bull**** but I will not descend to their depths and start slagging off your ground or town..

Nuff said!!! Feel free to copy and past this onto your forum if you so wish - harwood red :)

Re: Friday Night Kick Off

I believe the gate was up against Hereford for the simple reason that neither Blackburn or Burnley had a game that week-end. Some of their fans, therefore, came to watch Stanley. They were probably the ones I saw leaving with ten minutes or so still to play of an exciting contest (Why?). There is little chance of them revisiting the IES if their teams have a game at week-end which is most of the time. Friday night games will not attract dads and their lads as much as Saturday afternoon fixtures. The number of away fans attending will drop - in some instances substantially. Even after a Friday night game I feel `lost` come Saturday afternoon with no game in the offing. And, if it's such a good (if hardly new) idea, why isn't everybody doing it? I am pretty sure gates will not increase playing Friday night games and that they may even fall.

Re: Friday Night Kick Off

Can I just say that

1) I enjoyed the game even though I missed 2 goals and thought that Stanley played very well and controlled the game for most of the game.

2) I think having read all the posts and HUFC thread that if Accrington are going to try and play a few games on Fridays they HAVE to be aggreed beforehand.

3) The extra supporters were a welcome addition to the bank account and the win was an added bonus.

4) If it works for a few games and puts extra cash in then why not go for it.
