Mathematically impossible

It's now impossible for Scarborough to overtake Stanley's points total.

This is the first in a series of, hopefully, 21 posts.

(Yes I know it's sad, but when emotions are running high there's a certain comfort in statistics.)

Oh yes, Paul Mullin, GET IN!!!

This is probably me being thick, but I really don't understand this "five more wins" milarky. Five more wins will take us up to 82 points which surely isn't enough to be sure of automatic promotion?

fettler 21-02-2006 08:23

Re: Mathematically impossible

Coley suggested 81 points would be enough to win the league, and he is an ex teacher so he should know ( well that's what my 5 year old says!!)

last 5 winners
2005 barnet 86 pts
2004 chester 92 pts
2003 yeovil 95 pts
2002 boston 84 pts
2001 rushden 86 pts

average 88 points

Wynonie Harris 21-02-2006 08:50

Re: Mathematically impossible

...which would appear to me to blow the five more wins theory right out of the water.

entwisi 21-02-2006 08:52

Re: Mathematically impossible

I guess what is more important than the number of points the winners got is how many points second place got each year. After all, you only need 1 more point than second place to win it.

WOLVERHAMPTON REDS 21-02-2006 09:19

Re: Mathematically impossible

last 5 seasons 74,91.78.84.80 points
average 81 points so 82 could see accrington promoted as champions

Whalley Red 21-02-2006 09:20

Re: Mathematically impossible

If Hereford win their remaining 14 games, they would finish on 93pts. So we currently need 27pts from 13 games to mathematically certain of winning the league.

Re: Mathematically impossible

Second place teams totals:-
2005 Hereford 74
2004 Hereford 91
2003 Morecambe 78
2002 Daggers 84
2001 Yeovil 80

...which would tend to suggest that 82 points might be enough...or then again it might not!

Re: Mathematically impossible

Well, it is nice to see that the difference between mathematical certainty and statistical probablity has been established. The sharp eyed amongst you will have spotted the fatal conceptual flaw in Rob's betting table link.
For those of you you ain't,the column stating "lowest possible position" is of course, incorrect; Stanley could only end up third from bottom on the basis that every other individual team won every subsequent game; you don't need to be a brain surgeon to work out that this is not quite possible.

Here's a more interesting mathamatical conindrum for you to calculate. For Stanley's second goal last night, and assuming that Mullen shot from 15ft from the nearest goallpost, and the ball missed that nearest post by 2" on the outside and then passed the far post by 2" on the inside, what was the angle of shot?

Oggy 21-02-2006 16:32

Re: Mathematically impossible

These are my workings

To be absolutly sure of winning we need 27 points (at the moment)

Below is list of the maximum points each team could get if they win every game

Accrington 106
Hereford 93
Grays 90
Exeter 86
Stevenage 86
Morecombe 87
Halifax 87
Woking 83
Gravesend 84
York 83
Dag and Red 79
Burton 77
Aldeshot 77
Alty 72
Cambridge 75
Kiddy 71
Canvey 71
Forest 68
Tamworth 69
Crawley 70
Southport 65
Scarboough 61

At the moment we need to beat Hereford with a possible maximum of 93.
That leaves us 27 points to get
Of course this will all change after tonight but for all those number crunchers I'll keep you posted. (If you want)
You'll have to forgive all the maths (I am a teacher after all!)

Hope someone finds this interesting

Yes, spot on. I think some people got it, and had a laugh, some went off on a tangent, and some people proved that Maths is not for them.

Me, I will just keep on ploughing a sad furrow, the ultimate humiliation is sharing this sad thought with everyone, on my excel spreadsheet teams turn a different colour when they can't catch Stanley.

Counting them out one by one, only when it was mathematically certain, was a way of not sayin what we're all thinking, but are too nice to say.

i should just mention that a fat lady carrying sheet music has just passed me heading north.....rumour has it she wont be stopping in hereford to sing:D
my best calculation is that if we have more points than everyone else, or the same number of points but a better goal difference we will be champions. does that help:confused:

maccawozzagod 23-02-2006 18:56

Re: Mathematically impossible

we have 67 points on the board, Hereford can get 93. 93 minus 67 equals 26 equals nine wins. That is assuming that Hereford beat us. If we beat Hereford then they can only get 90 points leaving us to get 23 points ergo 8 wins. Every time they drop 2 or 3 points then we need one win less (ish).

Hope this finally stops all the calculator tapping.

So if Hereford continue winning including or excluding their game against us, the earliest we could mathematically wrap up the title would be York away or Grays at home. Therefore I conclude that I hope we both continue winning, we draw at Hereford and then wrap up the title on All Fools Day at home to Grays (where the Impossible Dream started I do believe) in front of a capacity crowd.

If we beat Hereford it will be 2 less wins we need as it is a 6pointer !!

But if you beat us it's over, i will then say the titles yours.

Do you believe everything put on TV? We are still winning despite only playing for half a game. Bet Exeter & Morecambe fans were saying the same before we beat em. Next week is a momentous part in time of the history of our club : 44 years since we were forced to resigned from the football league : us fans are up for our return, the team is up for a return & our chairman will see his dream fulfilled this season! From the man himself, ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...ey/4785226.stm )

Accrington manager John Coleman is targeting six more wins to be sure of clinching the Conference title.

"We've got to win six or seven more games to make it mathematically safe, and we'll be striving to do that."

Oggy 08-03-2006 09:53

Re: Mathematically impossible

Actually, John, six will be fine.

Re: Mathematically impossible

It depends on Saturday's result; if we beat Hereford, they can only manage 90 points, so we will only need another four wins after that, so it could be five we need, not six.

The Hereford game is definately the game to decide it IMO, if we win its 100% ours!

I agree with you there , if you win then it's hello league 2 for you guys.
If we win then it's a case of how you boys react in the following games.

Five more will do if we draw at Hereford.

Right there are now 13 teams that can no longer pass us :)

Southport
Crawley Town
Tamworth
Scarborough
Forest Green
Canvey Island
Altrincham
Cambridge Utd
Kidderminster
Aldershot
Dagenham
Gravesend
Burton<!-- google_ad_section_end --><!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Actually to simplify, anyone below 8th position can no longer catch us :D

Doug 11-03-2006 16:28

Re: Mathematically impossible

It’s the threat that counts Harwood, knowing these teams are behind us doesn’t do anything to relieve the disappointment of today. Too much time wasting on the deck caused us to play six minutes extra time which cost us the game and a 19 point cushion. Hereford play Southport on Tuesday night and I don’t really think they will hold up Hereford so that could well bring them within 13 points when we play on Saturday.

harwood red 11-03-2006 16:35

Re: Mathematically impossible

alot of that time wasting was actually robbie elliot on the deck as you put it!! As we all know if your keeper is down getting treatment you cannot continue the game, although I thought 6 mins added was a bit over the top and we paid the price when they equalised in the 5th min.

I still think mentally it helps to know that so few teams are mathematically unable to pass us now. And to be honest, for hereford to turn around 16 points is an absolute mammoth task for them and we would have to completely fall apart to even give them a chance to do so!!! Never mind anyone else

Listen to us , complaining about a draw at Hereford. The facts are, we have had a tremendous season so far, and it will continue with a win on Saturday...come on lads Stanley ARE going up, keep the faith!

That's for me too. I haven't seen them since the IES was a pub pitch with a fence round it, and the Crawley and Aldershot games were in range for me (OK I know anything's in range for a real fan - sorry) - but I thought if I turned up I'd jinx things. Hope it's all over by the Woking game and I can go without fretting.

There’s no problem here Jimbo, The last thing I would want to do is belittle the fantastic results the lads have achieved this season and the tremendous support they have receive from the fans, not least those that give time and effort to be at every possible game. There are reasons why I would like to see the club re enter the Football League we the greatest possible points lead, but at the end of the day we’re going up and that’s all that matters.

Watch out for tuesday night.. If Morecambe beat Hereford then we would win the league by beating FGR on friday night... Failing that then my prediction of April 8th herefored v Dagenham game being the one that puts us up could come true

Not at all, we only need 4 points now and thats putting the pressure on Hereford as the need to win 4 games and draw 1, if they don't manage that we dont need to win any :)
Grays and Halifax could still catch us though
Providing i'm not looking at an un-updated table again :)
