There are two types of loans: long-term loans (for a whole season, eg. Rob Elliot) and short-term loans (typically for one-month).

Short-term loans can be extended to last up to three months with the original club being able to recall the player after 28 days have passed.

Any player can be taken on a long-term loan or his short-term loan converted to a long-term loan provided (i) he was less than 23 years old on 30th June; and (ii) the loan must commence before 31st December.

There are also limits on how many short-term and long-term loans you can have during the season, with a limit of four short-term loans at any one time (as is the case at the moment).
