January Transfer Target
Luke Rodgers

Re: January Transfer Target
a mate of mine who's a shrewsbury fan used to love him when he was down there. good signing i reckon if we manage to pull it off. he's pretty similar to mcgivern, in that he's a nippy little striker who likes to get stuck in.
|
Re: January Transfer Target
played five games (7 as sub) this year scoring 3 goals, 24 years old (25 on new years day), fans favourite at Gresty Road for his whole hearted displays.
73 goals in 204 appearances for Shrewsbury and a former England Semi-pro interntaional. Seems to fit the bill of whats required but I reckon he'll be a greedy ****** with his wages. Never mind, get him on crap wages and top bonuses Eric and watch him shoot us to safety. I'd also like to see Coley try to get Evil back. I dont care whether folk thought him a big time Charlie last time he was here, he scores goals, he bullies defenders and he is a crowd pleaser. Still not keen on reading about transfer targets on other websites though, any press conference should be broadcast on our site first. |

See this Lee McEvilly gave Wrexham the lead on 47 minutes after coming on as a sub... We could do with this type of player, strong and powerful. Doubt we will get him though. I wish we had Barry back. Excellent defensive midfielder, just what we need at the moment especially now Gary and Ian are on their way. Make our midfield stronger less pressure on the back four and less pressure on the team in general. |

Any news on DAVID MANNIX coming back.
rumour was he'd be back in january and anyone at the grimsby game could see he had huge potential!!! ANY JOY??? |

Re: January Transfer Target
Actually just found this article on fearns from Aug 2005 that i for one didnt know about
Fearns rejects move to Stanley Aug 24, 2005, Midweek Visiter. SOUTHPORT'S top striker Terry Fearns has said he wants to stay at Haig Avenue. After recent speculation linking Peterborough with Fearns, Liam Watson revealed at the weekend that Accrington Stanley had made an official request to speak to the player. Watson said: "I gave Terry permission to talk to John Coleman so he could decide if he wished to pursue his career at a club with full-time training "Terry's initial reaction was that he wanted to stay with us and compete for his place. That's what I wanted to hear. I will never stop a player developing as long as we profit at the same time. Terry is tied here on a long contract and I have no need to sell." The ball is now back in Accrington's court. See Friday's Visiter for any further developments Has scored a lot of goals in his career, nearly 30 years old, could he cut it in league 2? I know he struggled in the conference, but that could have been due to the players around him and the service received.. Am i just convincing myself or am i expecting too much from Droylsdens centre forward? |

Luhe Rodgers is defo not coming to Stanley. Watch out tommorrow for an ex West Brom defender signing for us. Spoke to David Mannix Sat night offered a permanent deal but as yet undecided. A few other irons in the fire but no names as yet. Watch this space .

I saw him at Grimsby. The bloke stood out head and shoulders. It would be great for both because Stanley should be a great shop window for his talents. |
Re: January Transfer Target
Mannix and Permanent deal in the same sentance would suit me too.:D
I only listened to the commentary from Grimsby and he stood out a mile.:D |
Re: January Transfer Target
Talking as one of the few that have seen him play for us :) I did say straight aftre the grimsby game that he stood out a mile... Also impressed to see him still coming to stanley games... he was in the bar after the game sat..and saw him at a few away games...
But need to see more than one game to make a proper judgment wouldnt you agree? |
Re: January Transfer Target
Yeah, I'd agree, but he didn't half play well at Cleethorpes. On the evidence of that one game, I'd say he could really make a difference for us.

I ahve seen a lot play 1 game for us that I wouldnt want to see back again thats for sure :) Fingers crossed...

Mannix is quality!! If he hadnt had injuries we wouldnt even be talking about him at our level!!
The gamble must be worth it!! My mate says even Gerrard has recommended him to Coley!!! |

Seems like we can cross Luke Rodgers off our list, Crewe have agreed a fee with Swindon for him - looks like he hasn't changed, he'll only go where the money is.

Re: January Transfer Target
I think Coly is struggling to get any players in. I don't think it's for the lack of trying. There are possibly three reasons why no experienced league players will come.
1.Eric will not pay the required wages to attract the calibre of players we now need. 2. Quality players do not want to play at a stadium, that is frankly non -league. 3. They may not want to play for Coley, and his team of scousers. If nothing happens soon we are going to be in a position that we could not extract ourselves from, and the inevietable will be relegation. I never thought I would even think such thoughts, but I am becoming more and more pesimistic. If you look at the signing Coley's made since we were promoted to the League , they are non - entitys Saun Dougherty, a few young kids, no fees involved, it's as though we are trying to run a football club on the cheap. It might be the case that Eric has made funds available but the players of the calibre we now desperatly want and need will not sign for us. we all know of the players Coley has tried to sign, bur how many others has he tried for that we don't know about? Maybe I'm just being over worried ,but something has got to happen very soon. I honestly can't see where a goal is going to come from in open play, let alone a win. I don't want to criticise the present players too much but I think sentiment is ruling our heads, these are the players that brought us up through the Unibond and the Conference and into the Football League, but just maybe the have had their days, and we should move on very quickly, there is no sentiment in football, and we are all living in that past setiment including myself. Please Eric we don't want to be known as the one season wonders. Imagine the newspaper headlines. Club have monies in bank but would not spend any, prefer relegation, and in the black. Anyway friends I have got that of my chest now, and I don't feel any better., but I will still be there on Saturday, calling the Ref and Linesmen. |
Re: January Transfer Target
I was with you up to 3 which i think is a little uncalled for to be honest.. apart from our current bad run brought on by circumstances possibly out of coleys control (was he forced to sell roberts?) coley is one of the most succesfull managers in the country... what other manager has had 6 succesive seasons of taking a team higher each season? and the scouse thing isn't even worth a response :( my point being.. any manager would falter if circumstances are forced on him.. to sell players and not have funds to replace... not up to coley to sort the ground out either...
Apart from 3 ..I am with you on everything else you ahve just posted...unfortunatly... hmmm |
Re: January Transfer Target
Yes Kipax I know where you are coming from, I did say I never thought I would feel like this. Yes Coley has been succesful , but sentiment is taking over, the last six years have been supurb but they are the last six years, gone, we have to move on, I'm not calling Coley, a lot of the things will be out of his control, but what I'm trying to say is the club has to change, for us to even stay as we are. I'ts good to encourage speech and peoples indevidual thoughts when we are going though a really sticky patch is'nt it?
|
Re: January Transfer Target
why are you asking me that last question when i just joined you in conversation, agreed with most of what you said.. didnt agree with one point and opened a debate.... why then ask me that last bit?
I just think any manager would struggle.. thus i dont think it would be a case of people not wanting to play for coley.. more a case of league position, money and facilities.... we will either get old players on there last legs wanting a last season in league or we will get none league wanting a little taste of league..maybe there only chance... I really cant see us enticing anyone decent as you say..... i just cant see it... but my fingers are crossed and I am hoping somethign happens in this months transfer window.. |
Re: January Transfer Target
To be honest, I thought something would have happened by now. The position we've been in over the last few months has been unfortunate to say the least, but I did think that a number of signings would have been lined up, ready to go on the 1st of the month.
The problem, as previously said, is that Coleman can't get in the type of players we really need. The points raised by Tommy McQ are valid (except the 3rd one), and that spells trouble for us. Paying low wages, low quality ground, league position, etc, all play a part in the inability to attract the right quality of players. The problem, of course, is that we can't afford to operate at the level we currently are at. Low gates and, in my opinion, unsuccessful commercial activities, have left the club with a financial chasm that means we continue to operate on a shoestring. I really thought that fortunes would change once we could make some signings, but now I'm having some serious second thoughts. We've grown very fast over the last 7 years. Maybe too fast to make it sustainable? |
Re: January Transfer Target
yep its plain to see and Tommy McQ has hit the nail on head and posted what most of us are thinking (bar 3) but what next? can anyone see a light at the end of the tunnel... Well it's a dim one but it's there and if? coley gets some new blood in then we have a chance but apart from wrexham where we did look like a team staying up.. things look grim..
for me we shouldnt be looking at the conference and how good it will be... i refuse to look downwards... my fingers are crossed (hence all the spellos honest) and my faith is still there.. I said pre season a relegation fight that will be exciting and we will just scrape through and stay in the league... I am sticking by that....until the end of january window at least :) |
Re: January Transfer Target
Perhaps a slightly different take on No 3 ( ignoring the scouse bit) is that JC (As far as I know) didn't play league football. That could be a disadvantage because as in most walks of life it's not what you know but who you know.
There aren't many succesful managers around who played football at non-league level ( Sven is the only one that springs to mind lol ) Could it be that Cooky had a lot of good contacts in the game ? I have no doubt JC's management skills are excellent but perhaps he needs a bit more help backstage in finding the right players. |
Re: January Transfer Target
We have a team of players with little or no league experience (except with Stanley). We have a manager with no league experience. We have an assistant manager with no league experience. We have a Chairman with no league experience. We have backroom staff and administration staff with no league experience. The wages we pay are below league standard. Our ground is of a poor league standard. Our support is poor league standard. Unless something changes we will be back where our facilities, players, staff, etc belong. Hereford came up with us via the play offs. They lost players during the close season but replaced them, look where they are now. We have not replaced anybody, we have not strengthened the team. We are playing with non-league players in the team who are not good enough for the standard of football we need to survive in the league. If we are relegated we will be a laughing stock again. Will Eric then do the decent thing and sell up to someone who is a bit more ambitious - by which time it will be too late. Something must be done, and done now to save us, or we will become the first Conference Champions to be relegated in their first season in the league.
|
Re: January Transfer Target
I would love to see Cooky back i think hes got the links in league football which could help, but how does the club have to have league staff??? did we have conference staff when we got promoted to the conference? No! they adapted and got us into the league giev them chance, as for slating Coley i would like to know who you think we could get to come to Stanley? surely if we cant attract league players there is going to be no league manager who would come!!!
Keep the faith in the management, the team and the staff we will be safe come the end of the season, then lets all celebrate at the Open day!!! |
Re: January Transfer Target
John .. could your post be translated as.... shh don't mention the problems ...
You would need to have your head seriously buried in the sand to think there arn't problems.. I am a big Coley fan and I also support Eric all the way... but I can see problems and it's good to talk and get others views :) The answer doesn't always have to be get rid... |

Re: January Transfer Target
The scouse bit was meant to imply that Coley only has a limited knowledge of players, and most of that knowledge is centrered around the Merseyside area, in wich he resides, it stands to reason therefor with the limited experience particularly in League football, that the majority of his signings will be from his connections in and around Merseyside, bur I feel although he has done an absolutely fantastic job, horizons need to be enlarged. I honestly don't know what the short term answer is. Is it give Coley a large amount of monies to throw at players wages, in order to get some quality in? Or is it to let Coley carry on with his local scouting for young talent? I don't feel that at this particular moment that is an option. We need a quick fix, or resign ourselves to playing the level of football that we are most comfortable with, for the players and surroundings.

neither of us will be proved wrong or right till the end of the season, ill go back to trying to fill the minibus to all away games and keep having a laugh for as long as possible in this league and you lot can keep worrying over our league position, i know who will have more fun i still think coley and the players will keep us up, if not then hey ho we will win the conference next year, it wasent that bad the first time around was it! :D |
Re: January Transfer Target
it wasnt too bad at all, at least we got to stand up at away games!
|
Re: January Transfer Target
Without wanting to be the 'doom merchant', not many teams go down then come straight back up, mainly because the conference is getting stronger year upon year - there are only 3 part time clubs in it now compared with 12 in 2004.
If we do go down can anyone confidently say we'd have the squad to come straight back up, or would we be the new Halifax/Scarboro/Exeter/etc... |
Re: January Transfer Target
You both sound like you couldn't care less whether we get relegated or not, in fact it sounds like you would prefer to get relegated. Just the attitude that is needed at the moment - no ambition, which is comparable with the Club. I, for one, have waited 44 years for a return to the league and I wouldn't like to see it spoiled in just one season, because if we get relegated I think it will be a hell of a long time before we return. Maybe that will satisfy you so you can stand up at away games and get wet at home games.
|
Re: January Transfer Target
one minute its keep the faith.. next minute is it wont be too bad in the conference.... make your mind up...... stop lookin down... WE WILL SURVIVE :)
|
Re: January Transfer Target
I agree Jeff. It's great having a laugh along the way and enjoying it but who can honestly say they are enjoying it at the moment? Eric needs to give Coley whatever he can to survive this year and get in his number 1 targets in the transfer window. Can't help but think the club missed a big opportunity to get some loan players in from both Ipswich and swansea in the Roberts/Craney deals. Instead they just took the cash.:(
If you were Mannix would you choose Stanley over the other offers on the table? Hope he does but can't see it myself |
Re: January Transfer Target
jeff, if you cant pick banter out from me being serious then i suggest you buy yourself a joke book or look up the word 'sarcasm' in a dictionary.
i've been waiting 14 years to see stanley in the league, so dont try and tell me it means any less to me. we all want stanley to stay where we are and, in time, progress up the leagues. the situation is, we have no money, a **** ground and a first class manager. we have no money because we're always having to improve the ground and we have alot of part time supporters who come and go as they please. if we had a guaranteed crowd of 2500+ every home game we'd be laughing. sadly, we aint. anyway, to finish, it's not all doom and gloom. with no money we've recently signed 2 quality players in mcgivern and whalley, so coley obviously knows what he's doing (if anyone still didnt know that). |
Re: January Transfer Target
Isn't McGivern injured?? Quality players are no good to you if they're injured. :)
|
Re: January Transfer Target
ai he is, but you know what i mean. he was released from rochdale and playing non-league football when coley signed him. in the few games he's played (especially away to macclesfield) he looked by far our best player.
|
Re: January Transfer Target
I agree he's avery good player and good of Coley to look in the lower leauges and find a gem that no other managers were willing to take a chance on but all I'm saying is he's injured and quite seriously injured his ankle at that so he aint going to be able to help us get out of trouble no matter how much quality he has.
|
Re: January Transfer Target
Jeff - I can certainly vouch for The Debonnaire's deep rooted feelings for Stanley - cut him open and he bleeds red (as the old saying goes)
Regarding new players, JC managed to bring in Alan Rogers who, by all accounts, is a bit of a 'big time charlie' so perhaps thats evidence of Eric putting his hand in his pocket and raising the amount we're able to offer in wages? Then again maybe its just another example of the ol' scouse connection working wonders... ;) |
Re: January Transfer Target
Whalley looks like he has potential, but right now we need ready-made quality, not ones for the future. Signing players from way down the ladder is ok when they can have time to improve and develop, but they are no good for now.
The McGivern situation is another matter. He could have been an excellent signing and Coleman should be credited for that, but his injury has been plain unlucky. |
Re: January Transfer Target
I find it funny people say Eric and John dont have any ambition.
Would you like Eric to spend money that we may not have to stay in the league for another season and possibly end up like Telford, Canvey Etc Etc or maybe not even exsist?? Im not sayin there isnt problems...what football club doesnt have troubles?? yes we would all like a nice new stadium and top players and this and that, but for one reason or another it cant be at the moment. It wont be the be all and end all if we did get relegated (not that i want it to happen) but maybe we have come too far too soon and dint really have time to build the stadium or attract as many fans as well all like but ya godda take the rough with the smooth. |
Re: January Transfer Target
I agree with most of what you say Baldy but we didn't get in the Football league overnight. Eirc surely has been building towards getting there since he took over and we should have been ready for it not rushing round painting things and throwing up walls as the safety officers were looking round the place!
Don't think any club can say they get promoted too soon. You get the rewards for your effort and last season that was promotion. Eric has 22 days to give Coley the cash his 3 promotions deserves and keep us in this league. :D |

Re: January Transfer Target
The talk in this thread blaming all our woes on the lack of ambition by Eric Whalley, I believe are totally ill foundered. Eric has been the driving force behind this club achieving what it has to date. Sure, his approach may be a little out dated in many of our eyes, but his passion for this club and his determination to ensure the football loving people of Accrington have a quality football team to follow for many years to come should not be underestimated. Better that than have someone come in for a couple of seasons to flash some cash, get bored and leave us in the lurch. I'm sure if the money trees in Eric's garden started producing fifty pound notes instead of fivers, he'd shove more into the club. Don't get ambition mixed up with wealth.
I lay the blame for our current problems squarely on the shoulders of the people of Accrington. I appreciate that it's not overly appealing to watch a poor standard of football in a poor stadium, but the only way we can improve our situation is to increase the cash coming into the club. This means all the people who purport to hold Stanley close to their hearts, get off their backsides and support the club. We simply cannot afford to build the facilities everyone wants or attract the players we need with the current level of support. The only area were I feel we failed, was during the last close season when John Coleman chose to stay loyal to his Conference winning team rather than to use all the media frenzy and hype surrounding it to bring in a couple of top players. But hindsight's a wonderful thing... |
Re: January Transfer Target
Good points, but as always with blaming the people of Accrington for our troubles, you're preaching to the converted.
Nice to see Mangan posting on here though. ;) :D |

Football has become too expensive for working class people and you won't get many middle class people forking their money out if the standards of football and facilites are as bad as you describe. |
Re: January Transfer Target
ok things are looking decidedly iffy, but if you are a Stanley supporter you will have suffered all sorts of ups and downs over the years. Being a supporter of a club like ASFC is a full time job with not many real benefits but we all continue to do it because we have a deep love of this club. If you have a wayward chid in your family you give it unconditional love and support. Stanley is like that wayward child (at the moment) so we continue to give it our support. Things will improve, and all this talk of Eric going and John not having experience will be easily forgotten......I would like to see Cook return to give the necessary help and support to the team. There, I have said my bit, lets get behind the team on Saturday and rejoice in the victory.....(sounds a bit Churchillian but you get the idea)

Re: January Transfer Target
There's a lot of good stuff on this thread, if I can throw my two penn'orth in.
Stanley under Coleman and Eric have been the biggest football story of the last few years, by a long way! I've always had a romantic view on sport, from comic book heroes, Alf Tupper, Wilson, Gorgeous Gus etc. Stanley's performance over the last few seasons have surpassed their achievements. To be living just a mile from the ground has been unbelievable, also to have Kiwi John etc. getting enthralled from far away is what it's all about. We are now, and for the foreseeable future, the cinderella team of League football, but a League team nonetheless. I don't think we'll go down because we've got players coming back, Boco particularly, who will give Coley more scope. To lose 3 of your best players, plus injuries and suspensions, (something we can improve), has been very hard, (my heart bleeds for Jose). 20 games to go, eyes down, look in. |

Re: January Transfer Target
As a Stanley lifer I have seen us at the absolute arse end of football. I currently watch Stanley play in lovely grounds with nice seats and big impressive floodlights and crowds of 6/7000. I personally do not care per se if we end up having to play in the lower leagues again because I have watched the dream unfold before my eyes over the last 10 years.
When Eric Whalley took over we were £75000 in debt, playing in front of 250 people with a ground capacity of 2600. We were signing players from Whinney Hill and Altham for Gawds sake. Now we are free of debt, with considerable assets and a million pound turnover, playing in front of 2500/3000 people regularly and the ground, although lacking in comforts, holds over 5000. And we have witnessed one of the greatest sporting comebacks ever. For a tiny club like Stanley to come through the pyramid, in spite of the bigger clubs at the end of the street, in spite of poor crowds, in spite of poor facilities, in spite of local public apathy, is nothing short of a miracle. This has been made possible by shrewd helmanship by the Chairman and by the galvanising man management of the manager. Eric Whalleys' contribution to the footballing folk of Accrington must never be forgotten. John Coleman must be allowed to make mistakes as he has taken us further than one could ever imagine and has earned the right to get it wrong. Things may not be rosy in the Fraser Eagle garden at the moment but we have plenty of time to get it right. McGivern getting injured was an absolute gutwrench as he looked like the foil for Mully we have lacked since Lutel ran his course. Roberts and Craney going was an inevitable nightmare that rocked the club, Boco doing his back whilst on International duty (when did Stanleyites ever envisage that problem?) was harsh, an almost entire team on the treatment table was the straw that broke the camels back. If we stay up we know that we have been able to compete in plenty of games this season and assuming that we dont have equally bad luck next season we will be entirely better equipped to have a tilt at something meaningful. We will also have a second successive year of 'big league' money via television money that will start to make a difference to the aesthetics of the ground, we will also have hopefully learned the commercial lessons of this season and be better able to exploit the cash cow. If we do go down, it wont be the end of the world, it will be no more than another chapter in the romantic fairytale that is Accrington Stanley |

I dont think Coley has made mistakes, he was making provision for the loss of Roberts and Craney by bringing in McGivern and Mannix, both of them out in a flash coupled with Boco and Cavs long term probs have him making contingency plans before his original ones could unfold. He also strengthened the Squad with Bains and jacobson then Oh asterix Ventre and Dunbavin out. The mans thinking on his feet for Christs sake, would anyone on here REALLY like to be sorting this mess out for us. While we`re happily typing out our misery he`ll be up to the eyeballs with facts figures and possibilities looking for a way to keep us up.

Re: January Transfer Target
if its the game we won 3-0 then neither of them played. I was looking forward to seeing the 16 yearl old kid that everybody was raving about but he wasn't even on the coach even though Liverpool had said he would play. It was mainly a team of reserves, the only name I can remember was Tony Warner the keeper who I think now plays at Millwall.

David Beckham is available now! Is there enough room in the stand for his entourage and bouffant?
