Following the Hillsborough Disaster, the government accepted the recommendation of Lord Justice’s Taylor’s inquiry that grounds in the top two divisions should become all-seated. The Inquiry’s conclusion that, while “there is no panacea which will achieve total safety and cure all problems of behaviour and crowd control, seating does more to achieve these objectives than any other single measure”, has been proved to be correct.
It is generally accepted that Premiership and Football League grounds are safer, more comfortable and more civilised that they were ten or twelve years ago, though the FLA recognise that not all the changes have found favour with all spectators.
The injury statistics that we have collected and published for the past few seasons strongly suggest that a spectator is less likely to be injured at an all-seated ground than at one that retains standing accommodation. This has remained true even since standing terraces were required to be upgraded to a prescribed standard, though the difference has reduced. While we have made standing much safer, it is still not as safe as sitting.
There are, moreover, a significant number of practical reasons against reintroducing standing terraces at our all-seated grounds. The conversion of all or part of a seating deck to standing accommodation would raise all sorts of complicated design and engineering issues relating to the gradient, the row depth, the viewing standards, the dynamic movement of the deck and the dynamics of the crowd. As a generality, it would require more space (hence a lower capacity) and spectators would have to be further away from the pitch to obtain an adequate view. It would also constrain the size and design of any concourses.
Moreover, standing accommodation may not be used for any international, Champions League or UEFA Cup match. During the 2006 World Cup all the stadia in Germany will be required to be all seated.
The Minister for Sport has stated publicly that the government will not abandon its all-seater policy unless compelling evidence is produced that it is no longer necessary.

Yes, I know, I know, but all this still does not address my point earlier in the thread which was - if safety is the criteria why is it safe to allow us to struggle to keep our balance when trying to get past already seated supporters before games and at half time? It's a damn sight more dangerous than that just standing during the game IMO. If stewards really were interested in safety, rather than excercising what appears to be their misguided brief, then we would have to fill up seats from the middle of the row outwards and vacate them from the outside inwards. Of course, if one geriatric like me needs the loo during the match everyone else would have to go too. And that's just as daft as the situation as it stands(!) at the moment is.:D

There's a time and place for seating. Sell-out Wembley, Old Trafford, Anfield etc yes, 700 in a 4000 seat stand no.

I was listening to the Five Live phone-in as I drove back to Bristol from last night's game. Lots of Liverpool fans called in to praise the team and their own supporters - two commented on how fantastic it was to be in the crowd standing on The Kop for 90 minutes. When asked by presenter Mark Lawrenson about standing rather than sitting, one replied that everyone stands on The Kop.

By the way, I did send a text to the programme to praise Stanley - it was not read out.

Re: Stanley steward today

Going a bit light hearted now but Grays last year was a prime example of how to aviod sitting:

the stewards were getting a bit lairy with their 'enforcing' and were quoting allsorts of regs and rules and if you dont sit down you're leaving. So we made a big song and dance (unlike the Ultras innit) about sitting down. As soon as everybody was seated, up went the cry 'Stand Up if you love Stanley' at which point more people stood up than initially were. Then we sat, again. Then we decided that to stand up and sing we would walk to the corner flag where there was a little concrete concourse. 'We're walking - so we can stand and sing, we're walking - so we can stand and sing!' All the stewards had to accompany us as they were set up for monitoring the stand. And, like Redraine says, the staying seated had to half crouch/stand to allow us all past. Having conga'd to the corner flag and had half of Londons finest coppers and stewards follow us, we decided standing sucked and we'd rather sit ................

After 15 or so minutes of this they agreed we were a) 'top of the league (soon to be) and havin a laff and b) posed no threat whatsoever. They saw sense and relaxed a bit. We had great banter with them (big breasted blonde in particular http://www.kipax.com/gallery.php ) and ended up having one of the best away days ever for lots of reasons, not least ending Grays bid for a Conference record unbeaten streak and subsequently breaking their hearts and minds.

Let the people stand.

Try reading my initial response. As a 48 year old male I would have assumed you were mature enough to take responsibility for your own actions. Read my lips-No individual fan was pointed out by me or given advice to the Rochdale stewards re being ejected. Their ground-their rule. The dale stewards did act on thier own as you found out to your detriment since you and 26 others would not heed or accept Phils or my advice to you all that they would start ejecting if you continued to fail to comply with their stewards. As Mick Schultz put in last nights programme your actions brought shame & a reputation on the club that could cost it in extra games being policed at a cost of at least £5000 per game & could also have been taken further by the league if Rochdale had reported the expultion of you all to them. Explain wasting club money like that to Eric. As to safety more fans were crowded together than that area allowed for- one fan gets pushed, goes tumbling forward, grabs someone else & you have a cascade of fans repeating the same with resultant mass causing who knows what injuries. Its not a case of it didn't happen, health & safety is about what could happen & preventing before it does. We had to sit & watch the Bradford fire disaster from outbreak as part of our course on why stewards are required at all public events now, only three persons were at bradford & the one with keys was having a brew at the other end of the ground. I am sure some like minded fans said that could never happen but it did.
Dealing with the opposition fans is not easy at best of times but when you try & help your own fans & get it thrown back in your face because someone thought wrongly they were being grassed up,then took no heed of our warning & then put the blame on us for the consequenses sucks. Do not put words in my mouth again, had I done anything detrimental I am big enough to have stood up & appologised but I did not & as I said before I think the appologies should go to the players & directors Of Accrington Stanley for the shame you brought on the club. All stewards have undertaken voluntary training as stewards & have been and continue to be assesed in our duties as such by the club, representatives of Telford colledge the FA & Lancashire county council & have passed all inspections as to our role & told we are doing our job as trained ,well & will continue to do so. If you are offended by our actions which will be taken after fair warning for your breaking the ground regulations then simply stay away because the rules will not be changed or broken for anyone. You can continue to bicker among yourselves as much as you want but this fact will not change, just leave me out of it now as I am not prepared to have to repeat mysef anymore. You make your bed-you lie in it!

Possible or potential! Said my piece, put whatever concocted excuses you want to, doesn't change the shame brought on the club by people old enough to realise the consquenses of their own actions. Thats my main point. I am out of this one its getting stupid! Suggest you ignore any more postings too Phil, they'll only twist everything as already shown!

big al I am not arguing the rights and wrongs of what we did. I am arguing the wrongs of what you did. If you paid to go in. how did the dale stewards know you are a steward. Because you put yourself forward. You wanted to feel important. This was not for the safety of the fans as they where not in danger.

Most would not have been thrown out of it wasn't for you. You wanted to feel important. Your job as a Steward has gone to your head. At the end of the day you where a paying fan like the rest of us. You didn't have to point out who you decided where ring leaders. You just wanted to do it. Shame on you for using us like that. Shame on you not us.

Out of the away games I have been to this season, next year I will not be going to Bury, Rochdale, Grimsby, Notts County, Mansfield or Stockport.

Only two sets of stewards out of those made any kind of bother about the standing, the rest were fine. No fan of ASFC should WANT to bring shame and reputation to our club - least of all me.

I go to the football mainly for the atmosphere, which just isn't the same when you HAVE to sit. So I will not bring any more shame to my club and will avoid those grounds in future.

This could explain a lot. I, perhaps mistakenly, was under the impression that people went to football matches mainly to watch the football. Just shows how wrong you can be.

even a lot of non football fans can't fail to feel the buzz and excitement of being part of large or loud following of fans.

Anfield is perhaps one of the biggest examples but there is absolutely nothing like the spectacle of 40000 people singing You'll never walk alone and giving it everything they have, with their chests pumped up and their fists defiantly punching the air at the end of every sentence. Goose bump tackle.

For me it is like that when 10 of us manage to outsing the home support when we go away. Many a time I can remember little of the match itself as I want to sing and chant throughout and try my best to inspire the lads to victory. Its about I come from 'Accrington and this is what we have'. Maybe its tribal, maybe its tragic, god knows what it is. The football is the fulcrum and gives leverage to whatever we do on the terraces. And no, that never ever involves aggro before any of you dare to suggest it.

"I am from Accrington, you are from Barrow, Frickley, Barcelona or Rio bloody Janeiro, I dont care. I am louder and prouder and these boys in Red are what inspire me."

etc

You tell I am wrong and you are a fool. We all watch football for whatever reason, that is mine and that is why I dont watch Burnley or Rovers. Because I couldn't feel that way about any other town.

‘Standing accommodation is not intrinsically unsafe’ -Lord Justice Taylor 1989

People are allowed to stand at rock concerts in football grounds. If this is safe why is it not for football supporters?

Just a couple of quotes from http://www.standupsitdown.co.uk/

OK, this thread could go on forever, but I think the main grievance from the fans is that no clear communication was made to those standing of being ejected. I was sat just in front of the Ultras and certainly heard nothing, to be hi-jacked at half time is fairly poor behaviour and very snide IMO. Like Macca said, there are some grounds I will not go back to next season, mainly due to the behaviour of the stewards.

I've even considered not going to the Crown because of some of the charmless souls the club employs :(

If people feel strongly join the ongoing protest, (link above), or sign the petition or both. Don't moan, organise! I think I've suggested a mass boycott of the ground which has the worst stewarding earlier in the season. That could cost Rochdale, for instance, £15,000.

The debate is also going on in Parliament about re-introducing standing areas, obviously don't hold your breath.
In the meanwhile we'll have to use our nouse, and look out for each other.

The mind boggles! At last we are getting to the heart of this debate. Conkers are banned in schools, no playing in the yard when it snows, firemen (sorry, firefighters) are not allowed to rescue cats from trees, refs abandon games when puddles appear on the pitch, etc., etc., etc.
Where will it all end?:(

I do a lot of driving and hate some of the speed limts we have. However if I see a speed camera in a 30mph zone I don't go driving past it at 50mph shouting "I don't agree with your poxy law". I know the penalty regardless of wether I agree with it or not.

The same applies if you are entering a football ground, if the rules say you have to sit then why do people think they can totally ignore it and then complain when action is taken them ?

plus driving over 30 miles an hour kills people standing at the back of a seated stand doesnt:banhat: :banhat:

And all these ideas have been thought up by a jobsworth who in his time off from being a prat maybe does a bit of stewarding at his local footy club.:)

went to the wolves v west brom local derby today full house 28000 was in the south bank (wolves end) atmosphere brilliant...why..? because the whole end stood for 90 minuets , there where loads of stewards on duty but not one tried to tell the fans to sit down or even try to eject any fans, i was at rochdale and found the atmosphere was only created by the ultras standing up but found the stewards being "jobworths" by telling the fans to sit down and even ejecting a few...why ? if the fans want to stand ,let them if they are doing no harm or nobody complains lets create that atmosphere

I'm not long back from the Celtic v Rangers game and over 8000 Rangers fans in a near 60000 crowd stood for 90 mins and there was no danger off the stewards or police doing anything about it. When Rangers scored there was no danger to the fans and I was one of them, so why is there a problem with a few hundred at Rochdale?

hello hello, if thats still allowed cos it aint up here. You're right it was a great goal right in front of us and 8000 people went mental and unless you've been to one of these games you won't know what I mean but it puts in perspective the Rochdale argument especially since at Celtic Park not everyone actually gets a seat!!! I've stood at away games in Scotland and in Europe without a problem despite the fact we are not meant to so health and safety isn't an issue but the police and jobsworths up here are cracking down at Ibrox and the smaller away games are being policed stricter.
