Craney??????????

just a thought on the supposed rumours about mr craney. one of the old cliches of football is never change a winning team. if anything does come of this rumour and we can some how pull off a major transfer coup. were would we find room for craney. i know he finished his accy carreer playin up front but i think dsane has the makings of a good partnership with mullin so i wouldnt play him there. he is an attacking midfielder so on 2days formation that puts him in direct competition with brown who i think is having a good season so far. who would be a manager eh.

Great player that he was in the Conference I cannot say I saw a lot to write home about in the Football League matches I saw him play for Stanley.

The Swansea fans have apparently been getting on his back.

Never played up front. Attacking midfielder yes!! Was sorry to see him leave ( same as Gary Roberts) If by some miracle we can get him back (on loan as the Observer indicates) it would give Coley another option. I just wonder who'd make way ???

Carden, based on yesterday.

Yes, I agree with this. I fear that quite a lot of us look back and judge him on his Conference games, but I recall the mutterings around the FES at his indifferent start in the League. He was caught in possession too often and his passing was wayward. I'm sure he did play up front in a few games before he left and he looked more of a threat there than in midfield.

Paul Carden was disappointing yesterday. If we are going to keep yesterday's formation, I would much prefer Rommy Boco to Carden.

Tin Monkey 23-09-2007 08:50

Re: Craney??????????

Carden's passing was poor at times, but he broke up play quite well, even though he isn't fit. I don't think Boco would be able to do that, although he would add something going forward.

Some short memories amongst you lot. Nobody really excelled last season but we managed to survive which wernt bad for a young side with hardly any league experience in the team.

He already had about 6 or 7 goals last season before he left I seem to recall. Nobody else in the current midfield has quite the goal threat and quality he has from set pieces.

I'm sure Coley will mix things up and it will be good to have more competition for places won't it?

Not when we wouldn't be able to afford the wages of all this midfield competition!

To be honest, I think we've got better options in the squad we have.
Harris (daft tackles aside), Carden, and especially Proctor all deserve first 16 places. Harris & Proctor have come into their own this season (in my humble) and Carden (when fully fit) will prove to be a great addition to the squad as he looks to be able to add qualities to the squad reminiscent of Marshy in the Unibond days.

Maverick 23-09-2007 18:24

Re: Craney??????????

The wages are a matter for Eric and Coley. If they can't afford his wages then it won't happen but it may depend on what percentage of his wage Swansea will be willing to pay whilst he is on loan. For whatever reason he isn't getting in their 16 so they maybe willing to pay his wages in full or at least a good chunk.

Competition for places and a stronger squad is a good thing for a team. The 1-0 win against Mansfield, a side who have let bucket fulls of goals in already shouldn't make us forget the 3 previous defeats against Oldham, Peterborough and Shrewsbury.

I hope we manage to get him back until January at least as I think Mullers especially will benefit from his delivery at set pieces.

maccawozzagod 23-09-2007 18:38

Re: Craney??????????

bearing in mind that other teams wanted him and were willing to pay money for him I would a) expect them to get first refusal and b) it would more than upset the 34 other midfielders trying to get a place who we would be left with when he has gone again.

Personally I'd stick with what we have.

I'm not too sure about the "short memories" comment. On checking records, Craney scored 6 goals in League 2/Carling Cup last season before his departure. Of these 6, 3 were scored when he was playing as striker (2 against Peterborough and 1 against Blackpool). Of the other 3, 1 was a free kick (v Wycombe).

Maverick 24-09-2007 11:45

Re: Craney??????????

Last time I checked goals from corners, free-kicks and from a midfielder playing up front still counted!

Like I said in my post I think his delivery from set pieces could benefit Mullers thats all and if Coley has more options to choose from then surely thats better for Stanley whether he decides to play Craney or not (that is if he comes back).

Best 150,000 (less Altrincham's cut) the club ever made, getting shut of him. Not a bad conference player but did nothing in League 2 bar score a couple of free kicks that everyone seems to go on about. Eric Whalley seems to be at a loss to explain the low crowds, perhaps people don't want to pay Football League admission charges to watch Conference standard players.

Re: Craney??????????

It makes me smile how people's opinion's change so quickly. The majority of people making comments regarding our major slump last season cited Craney and Roberts leaving as the main reason (as did the so-called experts).

I agree that Craney did struggle in the first few games just to get up to the pace of it, but then started to show his true quality which is why Swansea paid all that money for him.

However they go in 6 or 7 goals from a midfield player after only a third of the season is good going at any level. This is excellent news for us and once again Coley & Eric have come up trumps.

i cant believe some of you.

Harris was MOM against Wycombe, and has done nothing since.

Proctor goes missing in games.

And Carden is not fit yet.

This is a fantastic coup - the central midfield has been poor part of the team. (Why not play Branch there?).
V.good deal by Coley.

Lots of options this year - and only 5 points from the top and 4 of the big boys out the way.
Bring on Bury.

Brilliant news!!:D Another step in the right direction ! It just shows how far Eric and Coley will go to keep pushing this club forwards. If only the public of Accrington would get behind the team and push the attendances up to a level the club's continued hard work deserves !!:(

Thin Monkey 24-09-2007 18:39

Re: Craney??????????

Brilliant news. When Craney left last year it ripped the heart out of the team. We went 11 games (9 in the League) without a win and it nearly cost the club its League status.

Obviously it'll take a few weeks for him to get match fit, but, back in his proper position, as an attacking midfielder, rather than wasted in a defensive role, like he's been at Swansea, Ian can only improve the balance of the side.

After the despondency of a few weeks ago news like this gives one hope for the future.

Well done Coley! Well done Eric!

Now all we have to do is hold on to the rest of our better players.

Roberts leaving was the main reason. Results took a downturn straight away. Craney leaving just made things worse - especially after David Mannix showed himself a more than adequate replacement but then got crocked on his debut at Grimsby.

He played a full 90 minutes for the club in a 2-0 defeat and from that you can tell he was a more than adequate replacement for a player who was second only to Paul Mullin in the scoring charts during our promotion season.

If you can accurately judge a player off so little evidence you're in the wrong job mate. Move over Fergie.

in fairness, Mannix was the only one to come out of that game with any credit and had shown himself to be a class well above anything else on that particular field that particular day

I think we must have been watching different games! Andy Procter has covered every blade of grass in the games I have seen this season (and last). On the evidence of last Saturday's match, Graham Branch is one-footed and far far too slow for central midfield.

Interesting news indeed :) Glad to see the midfield maestro making a return to the Stanley fold - hope he settles in quick n easy and starts scoring from the corner flag again (or to be honest scoring from anywhere as long as he does or sets up a few for Evil ;) )... Got him until Jan (unless Swansea pull the plug) - thatll do me. Great that Coley could do a deal and get him back here..... :D

That was in the Conference.

I saw Mannix at Grimsby and I saw quite enough of Ian in the League to form my own opinion as to what might be needed to constitute an adequate replacement. I have been watching football since 1966.

Perhaps we should both enrol on the Swansea message board and continue our debate there.

In fairness Kenny Jackett bought Craney then left pretty much straight away to join Stuart Pearce's coaching team at Man City. Martinez has come in and he's hardly had a game under him so it's not surprising the Swansea fans aint got such a good opinion of him.

Just spotted on Sky Sports News that Coley is still talking about a permanent return to the FES for Ian:

Sky Sports | Football | League Two | News | Coleman wants Craney deal

Given the fees that were talked about when he was originally linked with a move from Swansea, have Eric's lottery numbers come up over the weekend? :)

Just out of interest, as I haven't seen Stanley play since he returned, what's the general opinion of this? Do we think it's a good move or would we rather the club reinforce elsewhere?

maccawozzagod 28-11-2007 11:16

Re: Craney??????????

We like the guy
Coley likes the guy
He likes us

but it is a ridiculous amount of money for us to spend on one player when it is undoubtedly the defence that needs improvement.

Mully was in the Telegraph this week saying that he hopes we can find the money to sign him so obviously the players would be behind the move but I wonder what they actually think of us spending that kind of money when we pay the sort of wages we pay?

Maybe the one saving grace on any transfer fee would be that surely we had a sell on clause inserted so we would get the fee 20% or so lower than the open market?

Secondly he has already turned down one move on personal terms so could he effectively hold out long enough for th efee to become peanuts and they then just want him off the books?
