We only have a club because of Eric Whalley and the likes Messer’s Coleman, Bell and numerous others who put their lives into Accrington Stanley. Yes we the Fans are just as important in Stanley’s make up including us that don’t make it through the gates each week….

At the end of the day who amongst us don’t swear in our own environments, very few of us no doubt. Its real life telly, if it offends then there’s always a
t only be saying it; they’ll be doing it as well.

It takes brass bollocks to open the doors in the way they have and I would always prefer the Eric I saw last week to a total false one. And when coalley starts it’ll be like an x rated Brookside. Bring it on Lads, lets suck it and see…..

That's what I tried to say Doug !, and isn't it strange that it took a Granada Documentary to uncover the sensitivities of some of our contemporaries on the Forum?. I wouldn't have guessed that the odd flight of
invective would have stirred up such controversary in the breasts of dyed-in-the wool Stanleyites!.
In passing, and to underline my previous comments regarding the widespread use of Anglo-Saxonisms with sexual connotations across the entire Soccer scene, I noted, whilst watching a report of a Match on Skysports,a newly-arrived player from a lesser country in Darkest Africa using two of the more extreme examples of 'foul' language in response to a refereeing decision which went against him ( and not in Bantu either!), and it didn't take any well-trained lipreading skills to make out what he was saying !. The thought crossed my mind that seeing that the Referee chose to let the incident go without batting an eyelid, that this behaviour is so commonplace now in our game as to be almost acceptable !, and if you don't use this 'language of Football' then perhaps you are the odd one out!. Our Cairman, Manager and Players are part of this 'Culture'.The Clayton End Fans (berated elsewhere!) are part of this culture, and an important part as far as ensuring the ongoing survival of the Club, and all are under pressure to maintain the stereotype.
This being so, what we see, and hear at the FES on a Saturday afternoon can be quite easily understood.

Alfred.E. says 'Roll on Episode Two!'

As so often happens, people are replying to what they think others have said without actually reading and/or thinking about what they have said. Those who complained about the bad language are not offended by it - if they were, they would not go to the FES. The whole point was about whether the use of such language could deter others from attending.

Yes, it was a fly-on-the-wall documentary. But Accrington Stanley is a business and, presumably like all businesses, it wants to improve (it certainly NEEDS to improve) and it should be presenting a favourable image to the public. As Wynonie said, Eric could/should have minimised the bad language in the presence of the cameras. This series could have given us a wonderful opportunity to rise above and beyond the "joke" club, and maybe attract some further investment and/or sponsorship. I doubt if it will do so.

I wish you would speak proper english sometimes yonmon instead of talking in riddles ;). What do you mean by being under pressure to maintain a stereotype?? Its all about passion - plain and simple. When passion is involved and lets not beat about the bush here, there is a lot involved on a matchday from all sides, some people will swear and swear a lot - thats human nature. Agreed though, passion does inevitably lead to pressure. Unfortunately Eric has the evil combination of passion AND pressure as he also owns the whole shabang and is running it on an absolute shoestring so I can fully understand when he is at the workplace, he swears like a trooper - I dont think he or any of us are trying to 'maintain a stereotype'.

As you said about the player cursing the ref, I saw Mark Hughes shout the b word at the touchline on Match of the Day 2 last night. I have said it earlier and was pointed out by K-P very early on in this thread - this is a behind the scenes documentary not an advert and it was never intended to be and I cant see why this has created such a big fuss. Well said Doug btw.

I agree - but it IS an advert whether we like it or not, and whether it was intended to be or not. This is probably all that the non-committed will ever see of the business that is Accrington Stanley Football Club. I think there is a "big fuss" because our opinions differ about whether what has been seen will be good for the business that is Accrington Stanley Football Club.

How often do we read about "lack of resources", "shoestring budget" etc in these posts? Better business = better resources = ability to attract better players = better football.

I do get a bit carried away at times JT !...as you will have noticed!...and I do take your point about our support for the Reds being a thing of passion !, which is an element within us all that will keep us going to the FES whatever happens!

Eric was probably filmed for hours and hours which was edited down to minutes. If all the swearing and cursing had been edited out it would probably have been a boring documentary. Don't you think that Granada showed the swearing and cursing on purpose to make it more entertaining. If the programme hadn't showed Eric swearing and cursing nobody would be discussing the programme now and probably saying that it was a waste of time. I don't think it will put anybody off going to FES to watch Stanley, it's just that the Accrington public can't be bothered to go.

Definition of documentary - emphasizing or expressing things as perceived without distortion of personal feelings or insertion of fictional matter

A non-fiction motion picture film having a theme or viewpoint but drawing its material from actual events and using editing and sound to enhance the theme

Ta daaaaa!

Revived Red, this might be all that the 'committed' see about the business of Accrington Stanley Football club also. I would consider myself committed all be it at a distance, but for those lucky souls that get to go week in week out, still wouldnt get to see what was shown in that episode unless its a prize for a competition etc. Even then you wouldnt be allowed into lets say the prematch meeting with John and Eric - but the cameras were....

Sorry, Jimbo. Not sure I agree with that. The "committed" probably see the website, the messageboard, the match programme, and maybe a few games too.

Anyway, it's been good to read the varied opinions. That's what this messageboard is all about.

Saw another remarkable documentary yesterday, Terence Davies' Of Time and the City. The city in question being Liverpool from the point of view of the director's upbringing in the fifties, to how he sees Liverpool now.

He speaks the names Accrington Stanley, Sheffield Wednesday, Hamilton Academicals and Queen of the South in such melifluous tones against archive footage, to invoke memories of my dad checking his pools as the results came in over the bakelite radio. The whole film is spellbinding.

It's amazing to think how diverse documentaries can be.

What car crash tv if ever i saw it, wtf was that to do with the club really or the fans that support it, terrible episode scraping the barrel with that wasnt they ?!? & i thought cavs stag do was a bit much! Really was a bad half hour & not really highlighting stanley in any positive light at all! Glad i didnt even bother with the dvd tonight, what happened to Garys flip as mentioned before the start of the prog???

Granada had plenty of footage to use of the support & of the behind the scenes stuff - even coleyoke by the very coley would of been better or should say more in keeping with the footy theme. But as people have already said its probably more a mockery than a documentory!

What was shown tonight had very little to do with Stanley.Other than follow the hen do of someone who works for the club and our esteemed chairman showing in brief glimpses a somewhat understanding side, albeit in the circumstances which encapsulated tonight's offering, I fail to see how tonight's offering shows how the club we love is run. Other than a secretary who despite organising the whole escapade to Magaluf somehow manages to overlook that her own passport has expired!!!

Don't get me wrong, the girl probably does stirling work on behalf of the club and she's probably doing a brilliant job, but this whole escapade is descending into farce, especially with Stuart Hall narrating over the whole thing like he's still conducting the " It's a knockoout " scenario.

Talk about putting accross a "Professional" football club in a positive light!! It may be funny to some, but I fear this documentary is putting the club across as a joke, as much a joke as we were when we were the butt of the milk advert:(

Hope the next is better.

Is anyone able to help or have any Info? .......................Where can we watch the episodes again?

I've missed a few of them with work commitments. I've noticed a few members have recorded the show, is anyone prepared to post them online? (youtube perhaps)?

I'm desperate to see some of them (even though they've been portrayed in true 'Peter Kay Phoenix Nights' Style). It shows REAL people in a REAL environment. Fair play to all who partook.

Any suggestions for catching up on the shows then?
Much appreciated.

I find it reassuring that people thought the same as me. I was afraid that I'd come on here to find people calling it great TV, but actually it was disgraceful clap-trap that did nothing for anyone involved.

Dunno about you but a hen party was better on the eye than Cav & his "big 'un"

Just disappointed there was NO mention of any football, thats not the girls faults.

I was intrigued by the suggestion about running across the pitch.

If executed on match days would this boost attendances?

I thought fans where an important part of a football club.. I dont think it showed enough of them.

Probably for the first time ever :D I agree with you 100% K-P, I was receiving phone calls several times a week asking for updates on the supporters club... They filmed the media launch for our exhibition, the end of season presentation night... but never turned up to film the actual exhibition or interviewed on camera anyone involved!!

There was definately not enough match day stuff regarding fans either

As I said way back in the thread.;)

Tonight's programme was better than last week's, thankfully, but like others have said it could have been so much better, and they would have struck TV gold if they had featured some of Stanley's characterful, die hard fans.

It's been interesting, and I hope it attracts new fans to go and watch Stanley, but the series could have been so much better.

(Sol, the Producer, wasn't much good at art either.);)

ok so i admit that I don't go to the far flung away matches like last year, like many others, commitments don't allow it, but the exhib showed the passion that we have for the club and it wouldn't have done any harm in showing some of it, which along the way would have shown more of the rich history surrounding the club!!! It's gotta beat a flippin hen do abroad!!!!

K-P 10-11-2008 23:44

Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly

I fail to see how it would attract new fans.. just like I failed to see how a roof would.... people know stanley exist.. they know football kicks off at 3pm on a saturday afternoon.. i cant see that series making any difference to people who choose to do other things on a saturday... Sorry just being realistic :)

Hopefully it earned stanley some money and maybe business people might see it and invest... lots of good might come of it... But new fans... cant see it meself.

yes i do recall you went to a couple last year... i wouldnt call you an away fan any season though.. would you?

but whats that got to do with it. i didnt realise we where talking about you... I was simply stating that i would have liked to have seen some of the footage that they took at away games and home games of the fans...

there are other fans.. thousands of them... theres fans like jimbo and plumb who are massive stanley fans who cant get to games... theres fans in accy who not only cant get to away games.. they cant get to home games either.. there all fans and all good fans.. you shouldnt measure them by how many games they go to..

i just wanted to see some footage of home and away fans... thats all :) dont take it personally :)

Quite agree.

That should have been a five minute filler, not a whole programme.

thats what I put at the end of my first post too, that there definately wasn't enough of the match day stuff regarding fans... so I think we are actually agreeing :) in fact have asked many fans if they had been interviewed and none could say they had apart from loweiy and timmins...which is a real shame as they missed out on the real passionate side of the club....the die hard fans

to be honest an interview with a stanley fan would be hard to watch.... i can just imagine some of our charactors... arrgh .... no i just wanted to see footage of them supporting the team.... apart from the odd flash when a goal went in there wasnt anything

in fact sod it... i would have liked to have seem a whole program dedicated to the fans..

And that is exactly what they said they were going to do... they got some great footage too.. especially when the norweign lads were over

They could've almost given a full match experience (pref a winning match :D) pre and post match drinks... or followed a fan, their experience leading up to a game, the anticipation, the hopes, the fears... I think it would've been great

Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly

the problem with the programme was that it was supposedly about the running of a club and the hardships associated so I could understand that the fans aren't really part of that. But neither was Corinna's hen do or Cav's stag do.

they could have shown people like John Lowe who go up and help around the ground

they could have featured more of the Supporters Club and the efforts they make to try to help the club

they could have featured more on people like Jack Barratt and his infamous walk to Liverpool.

They were offered to film at the end of season presentation night, but though they were told proceedings started at 8pm we got a phone call at 8:15pm asking if we could delay the start until after 9pm when they could get there!

They attended meetings for the Exhibition and could have shown that a half dozen people were attempting to put on an event for the club and were spending many hours a week working towards that goal.

They could have shown more about the fans that do go to far flung games and the hardships associated with being one of only a few who have the time and money to do so.

On the face of things and taking the programme for what it was, a light hearted look at the smallest club in the football league, it was funny in parts and mostly entertaining. Even the wedding bits. But from the point of view that it could have done so much for us then it was crap.

I, like Harwood Red, took many phone calls and did several interviews as part of the 'research' into the programme. And I, like most of us, am disappointed that the fans perspective didn't come across.

Some go to games when they havent got the time or money, some make sacrifices that you and me wont take (anymore?) to watch a game of football.. I am guessing you have stretched it a bit from time to time macca.. risked getting in trouble at work or with the missus, begged steal or borrowed as they say.... to get to an important match.. maybe more?. we all have our own levels but it certainly isnt a case of simply having the time money to spare ... IMHO :)

snap kp was load of crap but if it turn one new fan its ok like you said it could have followed same fan traying to get to games in the times were money is hard to get.:do-one:

Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly

So it was shown local... what do we think. should it go national ? should the club show it over the internet for the world to see... waddaya fink ?

I say bury it :)
