Accrington Stanley - Exactly
That is the name of the Granada documentary that we all know they have been filming for the past year...
well it finally hits our screens next Thursday 10.40pm on ITV1 but in the Granada area only I am looking forward to it but also disappointed at the same time. From the start during regular contact with Granada they have labelled it as a documentary about the club but with a major focus on the fans that follow the club.. So has anyone been interviewed by them from here or aware of any interviews..they said they wanted to film the exhibition but didn't make the launch or filmed during the exhibition!! So I am praying that they have got a fair view of the club which I know should show the good and bad but hopefully isn't shown to make us all seem like a joke! |
Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
will there be a dvd because, i move up scotland on sunday and will miss it..
|
Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
who knows, I doubt the club would be able to sell it as the ownership will remain with Granada, but I know if it proves popular in the Granada area they are trying to get it shown on ITV3 which will be national on freeview/digital

Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
the OSC met and spoke with the researchers on many occasions and they did film quite a bit of what we did and attended a couple of meetings including one for the Exhibition, but most of us felt that it was disappointing that they never came to the Exhibition itself or even the presentation night. Whatever people think of Supporters Clubs at ours or any one elses club they are an integral part of the club and it would have been nice to have got a bit more footage of the efforts that go into certain things.
The camera crew did turn up to the Presentation evening but were way too late to have filmed anything, we got a call asking if we could delay the start from 8pm until 9pm as they were on their way - but with many people (mostly players) wanting to get the awards over and done with so they could get away there was no way we could have delayed any further. Oh well - opportunity missed but its not the end of the world. |

I'd be surprised if everyone doesn't turn out looking like Northern muppets anyway. It's the way these types of ITV 'documentaries' tend to work. :(

Have a look in the 'buy the house' lounge tomorrow for the first 5 minutes of the programme, i know this is a late post but i have just spent a while editing it to allow it to be shown pre-watershed. Granada have sponsored the game tomorrow and have kindly sent us a preview. SHOULD BE GOOD, BUT YOU BE THE JUDGES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
Really looking forward to the programme now, there a few things that I really hope to see in the programme;
1. the hardships that the club is under in order to function from day to day 2. the passion that the people in charge have for the club and how overworked some of them are 3. me :D When Posh did a similar programme a few years back it opened up new avenues for them that attracted the attention of people with deep pockets. Even though the club (and Barry Fry in particular) came across as a bunch of goons they still managed to get people in that allowed them to redevlop the stadium, infrastructure and playing squad. With a buit of luck some of that may come our way even though the programme is only going out regional to begin with |

Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
Having watched the programme and considered my response forsometime, I have to say I am very disappointed, not with Granada and the production company, they have to make "sensational" television, but with the Chairman who seems to have a limited vocabularly (the F word was used too many times). This so called family club will not attract youngsters and families if this is the kind of example set by the man at the top. Another golden opportunity lost to increase the support that Eric so badly wants. The sign on the wall in front of the Family area warns fans about using bad language and even gives the mobile number to ring if you want something done about it.....poor old Mick Shultz must be a very busy man...Coley giving it Fing and Blinding form the dug out and the Chairman giving it Bollocks from the stands.......ah well, that's football
|
Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
I too watched the programme last night, and I have to say, I am well disappointed. God help us at the next home game if that is what he thinks of his stewards (quote not worth buttons (or something like that) unquote). I personally thought it showed the club in a poor light and looking at who was there last year, now no Gary (groundsman) no Hazel in the Crown. Too many 'F'ing' swear words from our esteemed chairperson. Personally, I hope the next programme puts us in a better light. BTW yes it was good to see the ref prior to the Barnet game passing the pitch fit. Pity it won't go networked for a while at least
|
Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
I watched the programme, I dont think Accrington Stanley was shown in a bad light, and it cleared up a couple of misunderstandings, the only thing it showed in a bad light was Eric (the owner), it made him seem like an arrogant, money grabbing egomaniac, If you proffess to want more support locally, and especially from the kids, you cant go around berating and swearing at people the way Eric did.
|
Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
Personally I would have liked to have seen more of Stanley's loyal fans.
Players, managers, and indeed owners, come and go, but the people that file through the turnstiles week in, week out, season after season, are the one constant presence at the club. I too thought Mr. Whalley's language was more than a bit rich, and his comment that he wouldn't pay the stewards with washers, would have had me spitting feathers if I was one of those apparently undervalued volunteers. Great to spot a few familiar faces, though Harwood Red's bright yellow coat made her an easy target.:D |
Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
Its a series... first part featured on the chairman.. second part will feature on summat else.. one of the parts will feature on the fans...
The stewards get paid.. (I must be one of the few left who works matchdays and doesnt get paid by the club oh hum) Whats the point in eric not swearing. the documentary would be a sham if everyone acted differently than they do in real life. |

Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
I started watching it and couldn't believe how difficult it must be just staying afloat let alone playing League football at a decent standard, John Coleman should be knighted for keeping you there,
your chairman reminded me of Ozzy Osbourne but you can't knock his enthusiasm and it's pretty obvious he's Stanley mad, Tinpot NO, definately a club punching a league above it's weigh on facilities and resources All I can say is KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!:alright: |
Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
I don’t know if there would be much point in making a series if all involved where walking round being something their not. The program starting with Eric is logical, he owns the club, who the hell else would you start with, and other key players got an introduction which makes me think the program will be well laid out and fair.
Eric’s language was “as is” wasn’t it? Why be something your not, be true to yourself in the media and the bastards can’t set you up. Personally I really enjoyed it, listening to Eric took me back years to an Accrington I remember, I could close my eyes and be anywhere in accy. Good lad Eric, no bull****….even Joyce enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to the rest of it and I hope they do a DVD release, but why Stuart Hall as a commentator? Apart from that bloody milk advert he was the only bit of tat in it…. |
Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
Well I think I will reserve judgement until the end of the series!!

Theres a reason its on late at night :) I think your all going to be even more peeved by next weeks episode.. really behind the scenes :( Personally I htink the whole thing was a bad idea from start to finish. |
Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
i agree about the percentage, cos i have spoken to quite a few all of the same mind. but disagree it was a bad idea, i am advocating a bit of common sense should have been used, i was there the first time round in 62 n it was heartbreaking, everyone knows what a shoestring the club operates on, so good publicity could certainly have helped a bit, its not rocket science.

Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
kids shouldn't be up at that time of night
they hear worse than that in the playground football is/was/should be (take your pick) the game of the working class and for me the language wasn't a problem although I wont let my 7 year old watch it I thought Eric came across as quite funny although hard to deal with - so its true, why hide from that The club came across as tinpot and amatuerish - but we are and we don't hide it. It also showed that we have come from very humble beginnings and have come a long way in a short time. Anybody who can't see that is either blind, stupid or both The first episode was neither bad nor good, but it was entertaining and I am sure that people around the county will have enjoyed it for what it was. It is probably an opportunity for the club to try to capitalise on although despite the best efforts of David and Gavin I fear that they won't. But above all I think that it proves that Accrington Stanley still have box office appeal. I await the letters page in fridays Observer |

Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
Im not going to say how but Ive seen the programme and not much was shown that I didnt already know about and I think it was good to see Eric being himself, as Mr K says its a documentary about the runnings of a football club that isnt one of the most affluent. Yes the washers for stewards comment will offend most but that was Erics view at the time it was filmed.
The episode did show me some things I didnt know - the actual happenings on the day of the Brentford game that was called off. I thought the ref was gonna get mullered when he was trying to leave.... Amazed how passionate the Brentford fans were to get onto the ground even though the game was off - that shows just how much Stanley appeal to others in my opinion - you wouldnt turn up to any old ground kicking off if you couldnt get in because the game was called off saying things like we need to get in to cross a threshold!! Well.... I dont think so... :) Anyway - looking forward to next weeks episode for more behind the scenes reality at the club I love... Jimbo T :horn8:blower |
Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
After watching the first episode of the documentary, my first impression was one of embarresment. I know that Stanley are a little club, punching above their weight,I know they are run in a very amateurish way partly due to limited funds. I wonder what the Directors of Combined Stabilisation, Fraser Eagle, Buy the House, etc. thought of our foul mouthed little chairman. It may have been in the clubs best interest if he had made the effort and followed the advice given to fans of a Saturday" Please refrain from Foul and abusive language"
It may be worth remembering that a lot of people are offended be it, not just women and children, but people looking to invest in our club. |
Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly

Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
Thing is ...its a football match/ground, at the end of the day thats what happens in the world of football [whichever league], people swear part of life in the game. My dad used to describe it well, as a place for the working man as a stress management hehehe:D
Trouble is like many governed areas of life, footy is looking like its going the same way but swearing is only a set of words of frustration. I take my child up there & has been explained the language heard is not for her to repeat till shes an adult & observes that & will substitute any bad language into politer terms if she chants or shouts. Think as its about parents taking the responsibility about the rights & wrongs for nippers, but i dont wrap in cotton wool either & yes she saw the prog seeing well past the swearing. |
Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
When I am in the company of my staff, we all use occasional bad language, woe betide any member of staff who used such language knowingly within earshot of the customer, if that kind of language was acceptable, the adverts in between programmes would be rife with it. If kids used that kind of language at school, the parents would be brought in to account, imo there is absolutely no need to swear in the presence of women and children, or anybody else who may be offended by it, if there was any chance (in erics position) that it would affect my business, I would seriously try to curb it.
Get a swear box in at stanley, that should boost the coffers! |
Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
I think the language thing is all about context. During a game it may be more prevelant because of the emotions football carries with it. Although it does show Eric as he is, maybe in hindsight the language may have been curbed during normal conversations around the ground on non match days while the cameras were about. I'm pretty sure Eric is not likely to go to league chairmans meetings and swear a lot so it can be done :D
I can see both sides of the argument here, if the language wasn't as bad maybe it could have been shown at an earlier time and attracted a bigger and younger audience which could get the club more interest. That still doesn't avoid the situation on match days themselves though where industrial language is impossible to hide from kids. Ironically the football leagues campaign this season is to cut down on the language used at football matches, perhaps it's as well they didn't film it this season, don't think Eric would have been seen as the figurehead in the advertising campaign :) |
Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
some can defend it all they wish, its their right, far as i'm concerned it was un-necessary, n think some are too blind to see it could do harm.
|
Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
Eric's bad language doesn't offend me personally (and I'd be a hypocrite to say it did, considering my choice of words at times!). However, I would've thought he'd have the awareness to think to himself, "right, I'll cut the bad language while the cameras are around, it might put potential punters off." And yes, it would have made the programme a little less realistic, but I would have sacrificed a little realism if it meant attracting more through the gates. However, I must say he was highly diplomatic with that stupid woman from Brentford - I'd have told her to sod off! See, Eric, you can do it when you want! :D
|
Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
I have yet to hear any discussion or argument made more powerful by the use of bad/industrial language - whatever term we wish to use. I'm sorry, but when such language is used, it always seems to me to be the last despairing hope of the intellectually inadequate; in other words, the loser.

Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly

However, much of the incorporate language heard in the Documentary under discussion is, I am sad to say, common usage in most areas of Society today, and by people from 7 to 70!. One of these areas is in the world of Soccer, and you will know that it is not just the Chairman, Manager and Players at the FES who are given to using words that at the best can be described as 'Foul' ( Not Foul as in contravening the laws of the game !). but right across the Board!. If Granada's 'fly-on-the-wall' series is intended to present a truthful portrayal of life at a Football Club, then if it's manner of ensuring adequate communications amongst those involved includes words that maybe we wouldn't think of using, then it, being Television!, will without a shadow of doubt, use this to sell the programme to ensure the wider audience which it craves!. As to whether the use of offensive language might put off Fathers bringing their Children to the FES, then whatever Granada, or the FA say about it , or as many postings as we care to put on our Forum, this will not make it a suitable place for anyone who has any strong feelings about the insensitive use of 'bad language'!, Although I will watch the ensuing 'episodes' with interest, I am afraid that these might only go to underline the fact that if I want to carry on being a fan of 'the Reds', then I will not have to take that much notice of the strange, and as seen by some, socially-unacceptable words which I know I am going to hear !.. One can only hope that those of a genteel nature are not hurt or embarrassed, either by the Programme, or during a visit to the FES !. This would be totally unforgivable !. ( A brief PS to T-M !)...I hope that you know me better than to think that I'm plunging my head into the Desert sand !...but honestly, finding any answer to the mixed, and interesting postings on this topic would seem to be an almost impossible task ! Alfred.E. thinks that Stuart Hall is 'the Bee's Knees'! |

Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
Oh give me strength…..It’s a documentary of the realities of a belt and braces east lances football club, and regardless of individual sensibilities and our variance of what is and what is not acceptable behaviour this is the reality at the FES.
We only have a club because of Eric Whalley and the likes Messer’s Coleman, Bell and numerous others who put their lives into Accrington Stanley. Yes we the Fans are just as important in Stanley’s make up including us that don’t make it through the gates each week…. At the end of the day who amongst us don’t swear in our own environments, very few of us no doubt. Its real life telly, if it offends then there’s always a repeat of some pretend clap trap on the other channel in which the cast won’t only be saying it; they’ll be doing it as well. It takes brass bollocks to open the doors in the way they have and I would always prefer the Eric I saw last week to a total false one. And when coalley starts it’ll be like an x rated Brookside. Bring it on Lads, lets suck it and see….. |
Re: Accrington Stanley - Exactly
Has anybody ever complained on this messageboard about the obscene chants that come from the Clayton end (which sometimes are more obscene than Eric's swearing) ? Not as far as I know, why have they not complained? Probably because these chants are part and partial of football and are accepted even though they contain swear words or make implications about certain people's sexuality. When you watch footy on the telly you can lip read players, managers, officials all swearing, it's part of football. We don't have to like it but, I am afraid we have to put up with it.
To the people who are complaining about Eric and Coley swearing - Next time you hear an obscene chant or a swear word on the Clayton End or wherever, why don't you go and complain to the person/persons who is chanting or swearing and see what reaction you get. |
