Who's going to be the penalty taker?

What a nightmare for poor old Proccy. Missed a decent chance in each half plus the missed penalty. I would give it to Jimmy Ryan who can't half belt the ball. We can't possibly let Proccy try to make amends with the next one (should we be so lucky). His, and our, nerves would be jangling unless we were 2-0 up with about 5 minutes to play.
We made Daggers look like the worst team we've played this season, without playing all that well, but let them off the hook.

twas a bigger nightmare fer the fans, Procter should not be allowed to take an Anadin.:(

Re: Who's going to be the penalty taker?

All the Clayton End could have told you he was going to miss it just from the expression on his face. That said, no-one near me thought (a) it was a penalty or (b) that it was in the area ........

Re: Who's going to be the penalty taker?

In fact, the guy next to me wanted his Auntie Ivy to take it, rather than Proccie ..... and she's 93 next month

Needs to be Cav or Ryan, in my opinion ! Someone who can put their foot through it ...........................

Sorry - not Cav please. He missed too many as our penalty taker after a good start. It seems everyone who gets the job gets the wobbles after banging a few in. I think Lutel James was our most reliable in recent years, but even he couldn't bag 100%.
Time for a new man to start a good run.

Re: Who's going to be the penalty taker?

Why strip him of his penalty taking duties after missing just two penaltys? He like others wernt on form against the daggers and yes he did miss it , but their is no reason to take his penalty taking duties away from him! Their have been times where you have known proccy is going to score and he does, i thought proccy was going to score yesterday and put all his bournmouth worries behind him but he missed like plenty of other have before him!
To take this duty away from him wouldnt half knock his confidence and i dont think we have a better penalty taker in the squad tbh. The only good one i would of always bet to score would be Andy Todd!

Jimmy Ryan stepped up to take the penalty yesterday, but Cavanagh sent him back.

quite a few players get relived of taking em after a couple of misses, dont affect their confidence:confused: ya virtually knew by his approach yesterday, that it was gonna be missed, so why send ryan away?

fc:stanley 22-02-2009 13:22

Re: Who's going to be the penalty taker?

Because the simple fact Ryan isnt the penalty taker. Theirs always going to be negativity about this matter as if Ryan would of stepped up and took it then the majority would of said " Why didnt the penalty taker Proccy take it? " etc

cashman 22-02-2009 13:26

Re: Who's going to be the penalty taker?

so are you saying theres only procter with the ability to take one? cos no-way i buy that. if yer the appointed taker n ya don't fancy it, as was the impression i got.

can paul mullin take a spot kick? A good way to boost his goal tally and give a striker confidence.

Re: Who's going to be the penalty taker?

I dont think there should be a specific penalty taker. should be the person who feels upto it on the day, ie the person who is in form. bit like ryan wanted to take it, who has scored a few recently.

not really practical to me mate, what if theres 2/3 fancy it? unless ya have 3/4 competant takers n the captain then decides who?

Kramer 22-02-2009 14:45

Re: Who's going to be the penalty taker?

Captain makes the decision and remembers if he misses for next time. They should all be Competant takers. They are Pro footballers who are very lucky to be a in the position they are in. All should be able to score. I bet majority of the crowd would have loved to take that spot kick to earn those 3 vital points.

Re: Who's going to be the penalty taker?

Sorry i didnt finish my post right. Im trying to say if someone else would of took it like Ryan and then missed , the majority would of been saying " Why didnt proccy take it?". In my view if someone else was going to take it i would of got young Callum to.

everyone misses at some point, when ya miss two consecutive its time fer a re- assesment in my book.

Please don't go there - it's been tried before and was not a success.!:(

[quote=fc:stanley;683865]Why strip him of his penalty taking duties after missing just two penaltys?quote]

For the simple reason that he would feel a bag of nerves with the next one. You need someone without all that baggage preying on his mind when he steps up. It's a 99% confidence thing. No one player should be thought of as the permanent sole penalty taker.
I'm not saying he shouldn't ever take them again!
IMHO it should always be someone with the hardest shot first and foremost, never mind this wishy-washy placing the damn thing.

that sounds like a reasonable suggestion to me.:) agree about the "baggage" also.

You obviously have seen every member of the squad take penalties. Who is the best and who is the worst?

I agree. Last season Proccy just placed the ball on the spot, walked away to the edge of the area, ran up and blasted it. He scored every one. This season - Bournemouth away, placed it over the bar, Dagenham, tapped it to Roberts. Why change the way you take penalties when you have been successful? Probalby because most footballers are brain dead. If Proccy had scored at Bournemouth we would have won the game, if he had scored against Dagenham we would have won the game. Proccy has lost us 5 points with his daft new way of taking penalties. That 5 points would have gone a long way to making us safe. Nobody to blame only Proccy.

shakermaker 23-02-2009 14:53

Re: Who's going to be the penalty taker?

I'm a bit old fashioned with football so I always like to see the captain taking the penalties.

However in our situation I think it'd be wrong to take the penalty taking duty away from Proccy. Missing a couple is just a matter of probability/inevitability. If I was a betting man I'd put money on Procter scoring his next penalty, no problem.

Re: Who's going to be the penalty taker?

I know this is an old thread  But, another 3 points lost, because there was only ever one winner today and it was not Bury. IF we had have scored it would have been game over. 3 points lost and I think that is 8 over the season... Thankfully we have afforded those points, but how many can we miss before it comes to haunt us. Whats the answer ???

Re: Who's going to be the penalty taker?

I dont think Cav will be here next season. It was a great opportunity for him to cover himself with Glory, but come the moment the man was lacking. If his shot would have been on target and was saved I would have said nothing, but I think pro footballers should hit the target fron 12 yards
