I wonder if any other town, particularly one as small as Accrington, can boast of having three separate football clubs in the professional leagues? whichever way you look at it Accrington can rightfully be extremely proud of its chequered footballing heritage.

Burton's the only other one I think.

Burton Swifts - Div 2 1892-1900
Burton Wanderers - Div 2 1894-97
Burton Albion - Div 3 2009 -

In fact, strictly speaking, Burton have had four clubs, as Swifts and Wanderers combined to form Burton United, who were in the league from 1901-07.

This is a long way from the colour red. Anyone know why red? I'd assumed that white was chosen by quite a few ancient clubs because it was a cheap material from which to make shirts. But then there were a surprising number of early clubs that had stripes, so that blows that theory. Other than it was occasionally the colour of the Hyndburn (aka River Stink) when the dye works was in full swing, is there a reason why Th'Owd Reds chose that hue?

why the colour red?

well it doesn't come from the 'Stanley' coat of arms - if the original team was indeed named after a person specifically, as that crest is blue.

I would imagine the colour was chosen when the original Mr Coleman went to his local original Giftprint shop and said

"ast'e geet sum shirts ast' lads can run abaht in?"

and the original Stanleymad/lancsdave said

"aye, we geet hundrid weight o' this red malarkey down yon corner as tha can a fer nowt"

to which the original Mr Coleman - having been schooled at the infamous local Whalley Financial College replied

"dun, whats thi' finance terms an' conti gi'me a vat receipt?"

or it might be because the Accrington crest (which was only 'designed' two years before the formation of Accrington FC) contains a lot of Reddery

Attachment 14877 should have been this picture but can't edit it now. Thats the original Accrington Crest as initiated in 1879 (tin monkeys birth year I believe)

I agree with that Jeff. I know people will keep pushing the pedantic point about separate clubs.

My answer is simply that for me it's the same club because Accrington Stanley represents the town of Accrington. It's the town's football club.

Congratulations on a completely irrelevant post. I can understand your jealousy though.

We're the same team we've always been - from our original conception in 1875, until today in 2009. Where as your team tries to pretend it's a founder member of the league when it isn't. Another lovely little fact - Blackburn Rovers FC are the most successful team that hails from a town. The same Blackburn Rovers formed in 1875 that played at Oozehead and Lemmington Spa, prior to their home now at Ewood Park.

Correct me if I am wrong but the 12 founder memebers of the league were:

Accrington F.C.
Aston Villa F.C.
Blackburn Rovers F.C.
Bolton Wanderers F.C.
Burnley F.C.
Derby County F.C.
Everton F.C.
Notts County F.C.
Preston North End F.C.
Stoke City F.C.
West Bromwich Albion F.C.
Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C.

Now, I don't see any Accrington Stanley there. But, hey, I'm being pedantic...

It's not a "completely irrelevant post" it's just a little bit of lighthearted banter, which you'd understand better if you'd ever looked at the confguide forum.

Incidentally, hate to be pedantic, but I very much doubt that Rovers ever played at "Lemmington (sic) Spa".

OK. I will correct you Stoke City were not founder members of the Football League it was Stoke F.C.

So the present Stoke City are the third Stoke team in the Football League (same as Stanley). Try telling Stoke supporters that they are not founder members of the Football League and see what they say.

Sorry, I 'd only just got home (Internet and alcohol doesn't bode well) and got my places mixed up it was Leamington Street.

If I could be bothered signing up to a Stoke forum, to tell them something they will already be aware of - I would. Adding a name doesn't male it the third re-incarnation either.
