Personally I've always wanted my strikers to take penalties. It increases their tally, pushes them further up the goal charts - and increases their transfer value! What would Granty be worth if he had Edwards 8 goals on his tally for this season?

This is, I am sure the first game in the FL, that we have won, when we did not deserve to do so. So very often we dominate:- Imps,Gulls and Macc, to name but 3 and we come away with nowt, or a point, it feels FANtastic, to lose a man, go behind, have one disallowed against us, not play the best football, miss a penalty AND STILL GET 3 POINTS!!!!!

Erm unless they've changed the rules so he can play in a plaster cast or he's made a miraculous recovery then I very much doubt Josh will on the bench for the next few games. He bust his hand in the ressies against carlisle about 10 days ago, we got pasted too!!

Sounds like a great win today, just unfortunate I am on nights and in bed during the match, beginning to feel like our anitpodean friends. At least the bus home will be buzzing and some on here will be glad Boozers back in now that Bav's will be out for 3?

interesting so thankfully the imbargo has been lifted and we have to bring in a keeper this week. David Martin now at Derby and would have love'd to see him back but in a reverse of fortune brilliant to see Boozer back between the sticks

Re: Barnet Match Thread

Vintage, gutsy Stanley for the last half hour, but didn’t look too good until Edwards’ equaliser. We were definitely second-best in the first-half, although Kee should have scored after being put through superbly by Turner, but he blazed over. It was a poor touch by Deano that led to their pen, no real arguments there, and we were glad to get to half-time just the one down.

Coley then made a big call and got it right by taking off Turner and shoring up the central midfield with Ryan. Chris was finding it tough against Lockwood, who looked solid at left-back. It still took us a while to get going after the break. The plan seemed to be for Ryan, Joyce and Proccy to break it up in the middle, and for Kee and Symes to take up wider positions than normal, holding the ball up while the midfield – especially Ryan – got up to support. Coley also wisely didn’t ask the full-backs to do too much overlapping as Barnet were dangerous down the flanks, with both Deano and Tom Lees suffering the odd roasting.

So it wasn’t an overly-attacking set-up in the second-half, the difference I think was in the extra industry that Ryan brought at the heart of the action. It gave Joyce a bit more time on the ball, and his passing was excellent. We then enjoyed the sight of Stanley slowly but surely pushing the oppo back until Bouza became, by and large, a spectator. The equaliser was well-deserved, as it had followed a couple of chances created by long balls out wide to Kee and Symes, both put wide. A decent corner in was met by a Stanley head and it was one of those unstoppable looping headers into the corner. No idea who scored, too busy going mental.

The question now was whether Stanley could continue to press or whether Barnet would come back. They did skim a couple of dangerous low balls across the box, courtesy of the excellent Adomah, that we scrambled away before we won the pen. Difficult to say whether it was deserved, there was contact, but the ref was well-positioned, so who am I to argue? Phil’s pen wasn’t disastrously bad, low to the keeper’s right, but he got down well and pushed it around the post. We were cussing like buggery then, thinking that the chance to win was gone, but Stanley kept on pushing, and some good running off the ball from Symes gave Kee a bit of room on the edge of the box, and he fairly slammed the ball home, a real beauty of a finish.

Barnet had one last chance that should have brought the equaliser but their man headed wide at the far post when unmarked, but that was our only let-off. In sum, a battling, grinding performance more than anything else, not a great deal of passing football, but we kept possession much better in the second half and used the long ball well. Joyce was probably the pick of our players, alongside Kempo, who won everything in the air.

Well done to Coley and the lads.

Have a good evening everyone

Phil

Phil did not score 8 penalties in a row...Fact. Maybe 3 or 4 and some of those scored pens looked decidely dodgy. 66% success rate not good enough for me I'm afraid. How about the wonderful Michael Symes.

Re: Barnet Match Thread

Well that's just my second viewing of Stanley this season. Have been reading about super performances on here all season (recent form excluded). Now I'm Stanley thru'nthru' but old enough to tell it like it is. Phil's report is a fair reflection of events, if rather polite. We had 3 good chances in the first half, Billy driving wide when well placed & he an another blazing over the bar instead of hitting the target. Seems like there is a fixation with finding the extremities of the goal instead of making the keeper work and maybe get a deflection, rebound or fumble. We aren't good enough in league 2 to be consistently precise so why not choose percentage shots ? At times the defence was open more than Arkwrights corner shop and first half the ball was airbourne so much the physio is going to be busy healing sore neck muscles. As for the sending off, why oh why do Stanley keepers opt to give a penalty in exchange for a red card. We still went 1 down but with a massive handicap & a forthcoming keeper problem. Not exactly the best choice. Half time came with me muttering about park standard footie and calling for the young mascot to be brought on second half - a tad disallusioned you might say.
Thank goodness they got it sorted after the break and our 10 bossed the game, even managing to keep the ball on the floor at times. I regarded our penalty effort as full credit to their keeper rather than Phil Edwards' shortcoming. Our goals were superb and overall we deserved the win.
You all have seen many more games than I - do we always play park football against the lower sides ? they are better at it than us but we are a different prosition when we keep the ball on the turf. An alternative report perhaps - but as scoop bluebottle once replied to eccles "what paper do I represent ? - brown wrapping paper my man" . Nice to re-acquaint and have a laugh over pre-match drinkie-poohs.

Redraine 13-03-2010 22:45

Re: Barnet Match Thread

Well done to Coley for swapping Chris for Jimmy for the second half - he was great. What a goal for Billy Kee. It reminded me of one that Shearer scored at Ewood against Man U when he shrugged off Pallister and blasted the ball past old red nose Schmeichel. Billy should have had a hat trick, but now he's got his eye in I think his goals will propel us into the play-offs. Massive desire from the lads was great to see. Lovely real ale pub called the Mitre in downtown Barnet IF we are down there again! Presumptuous, Moi??:D

Having watched the highlights and read what Phil, Dan et al have written on this thread, I am not convinced the club are ready for promotion YET. It will come eventually, I believe, but play-offs this season, not too sure. Sure to be an improvement on previous seasons and looking at how hungry a certain Mr Kee was, lets start him up front more often, and when Bobby is back how about a 4-3-3 formation at home or 4-3-1-2 with Bobby attacking through the middle. Sure Coley knows what he is going to do without us armchair and part time supporters telling him. BTW thanks Lancsdave for clearing up the number of games Bav's will miss. Maybe we can get away without a goalkeeper for 2 games.

Just seen the highlights on telly, poor pass back from Winno, great header from Phil - Kempo was nowhere near it, good save from keeper for Phils penalty, great goal from Billy, but what was that celebration all about??? Nice for us not to play well and win!!! Well done to all those that travelled down to Underhill.

Val, the camera is on the top of the opposite stand to where the press box is, hence the mixed media reports of who scored the first goal. We had exactly the opposite view to the one on the camera shot!

And Kempson wheeled away like a madman making it particularly confusing!

It's a shame the highlights don't show the other chances as well - they'd give you an idea of how many Stanley actually created and (perhaps more tellingly) the relatively small number Barnet created after Stanley went down to ten men...

Brilliant day, brilliant result - I'd have been happy with a point after playing so long with 10 men so when Billy's winner went in it was fantastic, (even if I didn't actually know who'd scored it till after, just saw it hit the back of the net - superb :)

On the same services on the way home the team met Barrow team and suppporters.

A few familiar faces had a chat and Lee Mac jumped on board the Accy coach to have a few words with Coley + Jimmy!!

One of the highlights of the day on the way down was pulling up on the services to find a coachload of our friends from Barrow there, cue the song 'You're not Football league' & of course 'We Hate Barrow & we hate Barrow' - magic!

I see Gregg Blundell scored Barrow's winner, with a certain McEvilly on the bench. Is it the same one as the Crown's former favourite son?

Sorry, a very late reply... BEAUTY SLEEP..I needed Beauty Sleep, and 100 years worth would not be enough,(we had the junior trials Sunday morning and as organiser /selecter etc., I had to be alert for the inevitable parental barbs .i.e. .."Why is my Johnny not striker and you've put so and so there?"..etc.),
Trials part 2 next sunday but I hope to be on here , cursing etc..

Nice for us not to play well and win!!! Well done to all those that travelled down to Underhill.

Watch Soccer AM this morning for a detailed account from the man himself:)

Thought it would be on there! It was mentioned on Late KO as well, they did not know what it was about!
