Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
According to this, the last time we beat Rochdale at home was 29th October 1960. Time to turn that stat on its head methinks!
Dunbavin back from ban to challenge Bouzanis, Bobby's fitness being monitored daily but unlikely to appear today (according to fishy), usual news with Leam. After magnificent wins Saturday and Tuesday the lads will be confident of beating any team in this league. We took three points from Dale's own back yard back in October despite them being top dogs for the vast majority of the season. The pressure is all on them. Come on you reds. :D |

Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
I did not expect anything from this game , but the manner of losing it was difficult to take. The Reds scored two good goals, and then went into self distruct mode. We matched them for three Quarters of the game which was encouraging. but the Ultras even stopped singing after that, such was the disapointment. I think we have scored enough own goals this season thankyou.
|
Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
That was one hell of a surreal experience this afternoon at the Crown Ground
How did we lose? I am struggling to get my head around what actually went on after they got one back, we were the better side for 3/4 of the game but still managed to get tonked |
Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
There was a quote from Coley a few years ago, "for God's sake don't give us your dog to look after; we can't hold on to a lead to save our lives". And nothing's changed!
Gutted with the loss, but to be honest I didn't think we'd get anything from Rotherham & Rochdale back-to-back so to have three points is great. Ultras were superb before, during and after the game. The Clayton End looked brilliant. |

Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
Well a fantastic game for the neutral......... agreed massively disappointing after being 2-0 up.
I wasnt expecting anything from the game either to be honest but to press the self destruct button yet again was disappointing. My humble opinion Rochdale's substitutes changed the game simple as that. Higginbotham was absolutely outstanding for them when he came on, as for his goal simply world class. The lad that got sent off with Symes was an absolute animal and should have been dismissed far before that after doing the same with Billy Kee. His sending off could be a blessing in disguise. My team opinions........... Bouzanis- Not his best game by a long way, Bavs will be in on Tuesday. Lees- Could not handle their forwards in the 2nd half Winnard- See Lees Edwards- Mr consistent had another decent game. Kempson- Had his work cut out today but looked knackered in the 2nd half. Miles- Superb finish for the goal, other than that not alot. Ryan- Ran his socks off again, should have had more shots on goal really. Joyce- Another solid display. Proccy- Will run forever more, but was outmuscled today. Symes- Another goal, not his fault he was sent off either. Kee- Abit quiet for me today in comparison to last week. Subs. Turner- Hardly Touched The Ball Grant- See Turner Mcconville- Too late to make an impression Roll on Burton Albion |

I was going to say exactly the same mate, I CANNOT believe what happened in the last 20 minutes. My god talk about throwing it away. The last dale goal fair enough but how the hell did they manage to come back from 2 - 0 down ! Im not calling coley as he is an excellent manager but i would of took Billy off when we was 2-0 up and chucked on another defender and had 5 at the back just for the cover. Symes going obviously effected us. On the plus side we hammered the league leaders for 2/3 of the match. shame we couldnt of held on to our lead we really could of done with them 3 points plus now i have to take sH$t from a dale fan at work on monday ! |
Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
Absolutely gutted, honestly thought we could either scrape a draw at the worst. We really need to sort the teams heads out when we go down, we just lose it and even 12th man struggled to lift em up, drained me out they did, trying to spur em on. Couldnt blame symesy i'd of wanted to deck no 33 too. Tho it was a great football atmosphere.

Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
shows how far stanley have came being disappointed losing to the league leaders...
|
Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
Disappointed, but not too downheartened. Think Rochdale showed exactly why they're top of this division in the last 30 minutes. Don't reckon we'll make the play-offs, though - we just don't have the consistency; our quality seems to wax and wane from match to match and even from minute to minute. I'll be well happy with a top half finish! :)
|
Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
We played bloody well. Rochdale just showed why they are top of the league we didn't self destruct we were just outplayed.

I'd disagree with a few comments on this thread. In my opinion, it seemed like once 2-0 up, a few in the team obviously thought they'd done enough to beat Dale. You can argue that their second was a little lucky, being a deflection and all that, but when their first went in I had the horrible feeling of Deja vu, a.l.a. Bradford and at that moment (of Dale's first goal) could see what eventually happened, happening.:o Despite changes in personnel from last season, it's still obvious that we are lacking at times in the defensive department. It seems lessons have still not been learned. It may be my opinion, but to me, once 2 zip up against a so called better side, we seemed to freeze. Once their first went in, panic set in and from being on the front foot, we went on the back foot and the inevitable pressure told.:( Don't get me wrong, a top half finish beckons and given our recent problems that is an achievement in itself.:) However, having seen today's defensive capitulation more than once recently, ( Dale today, Bury on Boxing Day, and Bradford last season) that convinces me that, despite improvements going forward, until we can sort out defensive frailties and being able to handle pressure such as was applied in those three examples, we're not good enough to go up. I'm not sure where the problem lies, however, what I will say is that if Coley and Bell spent less time berating and arguing with officials and bemoaning their bad luck and a little more time addressing the defensive problems in general, then I for one would be happier. I appreciate that we seem to get more than our share of dodgy officials, however to me, that excuse is starting to wear a bit thin. Yes, Rochdale were a good side once they got going, however at 2-0 up, it would have been nice to close up shop and get the three points. Up until that point we never gave them a chance to get going. Oh yeah, and the all ticket policy was a great success. I was sat next to four Dale fans in the main stand ( Clayton End Side )and had a natter with another at half time ( sat elsewhere in the main stand, who I would hasten to add, stated at that point he would have been happy with a point) wearing full colours !!! Quality decision and policing by the local Plod. |
Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
Well, what a spectacular fall. With 25 to go we were bouncing in the more sedantry section of the Clayton End and 30 minutes later we were staring into our pints in the Oak Leigh wondering what the hell had gone wrong with the Dale fans singing all around us '2 up and u f**ked it up'. Yeh well that's footy. Two brilliant goals and then it all went balls up. Couldn't understand subs today. Easy to say in retrospect but after sending off, felt that Mullin on for tyring Procter and Flynn for Miles might have salvaged a 2-2. Having said that , Dale looked a worthy side. Was impressed by Kennedy (the left back one) and O'Grady. Good luck in league 1.

Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
Fair play to Rochdale. Good luck in league one its about time.
Symes needs a rest, at least Grant should be back fully. Still think we can sneak the play offs need to average around 2 points per game IMHO. |

never seen so many police thare the officer on the hourse was well fit .
the result was bad and i do not think we can get to wembley but i will be puting bet that stanley go up as champs in 2010/2011 also can i say thank you to the fans that saved me from hurting my self when i fell over at ht in the clayton end |
Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
The first of Dale's to be honest came so quick after Stanley's second there was a shell shock about it right from the terraces to the team, maybe in hindsight then was the time for change going five at the back but that is not our style.
Fair play to Dale they played some good stuff but defenders backing off around the area is not good to see, show them outside away from goal but not inside and a direct route to goal. I am not sure on the killer third but I have it in my mind that our left back had pushed up field and was out of position as we lost possesion and they broke leaving us short at the back? It was a thrilling game and no shame in losing to Dale, my only overall gripe is more towards in the manner we self imploded and being slightly disappointed that Dale were there for the taking. |
Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
we didn't lose the game, Rochdale won it - end of story.
Dagnall and O'Grady were fantastic and the full backs were brilliant, but to a man Rochdale were faster and stronger than us. Good side who got what they deserved yesterday. |
Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread

Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
Totally agree with Macca – thought Rochdale deserved to win. However, I don’t see how we are going to benefit from Michael Symes’s enforced “rest”. Perhaps someone could tell me who’s going to lead the line. Grant has neither the ability nor the “bottle” to do it and the rest, apart from Billy, are just lightweight wingers. Billy is great, but needs someone to play off and, as things stand, I just can’t see who that might be for the next three games.
Someone also said that, after yesterday, Boozer should be replaced. Again, I can’t see where that comes from. One of their goals was a wicked deflection, the last one was punishment for the “muck or nettles” attempt to throw everything forward for the equaliser, and the other two seemed to me to be a result of defensive frailties against a strong attacking side. Bring back Bavs, by all means, if you want to give up on the play-offs altogether, but I personally would be looking at ways to give the likes of Flynn and McCarten a run. They might just add a bit of tightness at the back. Having said all that, Rochdale were a very good side, and even an unchanged defence might get us back on track on Tuesday. Can’t say I’m as confident about the centre-forward situation though! |
Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
It's time for Billy Kee to really step up now. As Oldgobbin quite rightly says, Kee isn't going to have the strong centre forward alongside him to play off for the next few games. For what it's worth I'd rather see a 4-4-1-1 with Jimmy Ryan playing just behind Billy Kee in the way Coley tried with Ian Craney some time ago. In my mind that would be more effective than a ~75% fit Bobby Grant spending 90 minutes failing to win the ball against a big centre half, getting frustrated and picking up bookings! It'd also give Turner the start he deserves in Jimmy's place in midfield.

Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
Well said, to replace michael is going to be hard, to all those who say hes tired well he played 14 games last season in shrews 2nd team, and here he is having played 40 first team games so thats prob why,but i would rather have a tired symesy than bobby and billy leading the line, both have done great with him along side them, and for those who say we will play it on the floor a bit more, thats what symesy has done all season, hes been the reason why we are where we are, rest up mick, get back soon.player of the season by a mile,
|
Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
Thing is I rate Symes highly but for whatever reason I think he has suffered lately, I am not sure if that is fatigue, lack of service, ongoing contract talks?
But it is a chance to give the team perhaps a different dimension and players a chance to come to the fore who may not have had that chance otherwise? Not sure if Bobby starting for a full ninety minutes is the ticket if he is not yet fully fit? We have Chris Turner, Gary King and Mconville all of whom could play the free role tucked in behind Kee and have the pace to pull defences around and create chances. While not maybe being natural front men the link up with Kee and the rest of midfield could give us extra options. Kee is no slouch with his pace and has a position of being able to hold the balll up well when played to feet and bring other players into play see yesterdays goals for that. |

Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
Quote:
However the difference for me again rightly or wrongly has been his link up play and one of his main attributes is being able to bring other players into play, his understanding with Grant in particular up till January was almost telepathic and sometimes breathtaking to watch that has gone missing slightly since then and he seems to have to drift to the left having to look for the ball more over recent games and seemingly wants that extra touch to bring it in? These are only my observations and my views, maybe likewise to the Team when you are playing well week in week out expectations may rise too much:) |
Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
Maybe, but for someone to play 40 odd games and not have days off wouldnt be right,as for a striker judged on goals i have heard that one before, bobby would not have had half the goals hes had were it not for michael, when your not scoring you must be creating and thats what hes done all season,i have seen us play poor in some games early in the season with michael and bobby not clicking and win, then play well and lose, thats football son,
|
Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
I seen michael get clobbed yesterday twice by their no 33 form behind in the first half and struggled to run for a while, then gets an elbow in the face from the same no 33 from the throw in the rest was history, good to see mick do him though and wanting more, no 33 didnt want to know,
|
Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
For what it is worth, I agree with Macca on this, Dale won this one, they did not let being 2 down bother them, granted they got 1 back quickly and the second shortly after that, but all in all Dale were the better Team!
The first half was even and for us to be 2 up on 65 mins was a little surprising - if we had been 2 down then, I would have been gutted! - but it did not get them down, in fact it spurred them on, yes their second was very lucky, but they used that luck and turned it into belief. Before yesterday, they had won 22 times already this season, scoring 71 times, this is a very good Rochdale side, that we matched for 70 mins! Yes I am gutted that we did not win from 2 goals up, but I will be more gutted if we do not beat Burton on Tuesday night! On a seperate note, I am very pleased to see Coley using his bench for the third game in a row, he did it with great effect in the last 2 games and at least he gave it a go yesterday :) As has been said already - I think - it is a measure of how far we have come, that we look on yesterday as match lost!! Bring on The Brewers!!! 1 more win to beat the best we have had in the FL!!!!! :) :) ON STANLEY ON |
Re: Stanley vs. Rochdale match thread
If I could add a little footnote here, some of you are going on about how the players need a rest - reality check, they only play 90+ minutes per game with a 15 minute break after 45 minutes, running around maybe twice a week and get paid for it. I wish I could do the same but unfortunately I average 48 hours a week over 4 days for my money. Yes, they do train as well, but we don't have the biggest squad in the world but it could be rotated for different matches as it will have to be for the next 3 with Grant coming back from injury (not yet ready for 90 minutes) and Michael being banned for the next 3 games.
