Fans Mindset for this season

Taking all things into account, 22nd place would be a great achievement this season.
Thus, we as the fans of Stanley need to change our mindset (and before I start to preach I will put my hand up as one of the most guilty of this sin!)

We need to be very patient and build the players up - we wont have the funds to bring anymore in
we need to encourage the players and management and support their decisions, even if substitutions or tactics seem bizarre - we wont get a better management team than JC and JB.
We need to make the crown ground a fortress and use its limited facilities/conditions to our strength
We need to temporarily forget last season achievements, and make ourselves aware than finishing 22nd or higher is the equivalent to winning the league.

lets change our mindsets, lets make survival our aspiration and more importantly, lets treat every game as a cup final/6 pointer.
And when we hit 50 points, we can celebrate.

Despite league 2 looking open in terms of a winner, it also looks highly competitive from top to bottom.

At this minute I'm just hoping the embargo will allow us to start the season as not sure if we have enough registered to field a team on saturday. If we are legit to play in the football league then am happy for the future to be in the hands of John 'n Jimmy to work their magic.

Surviving in the Football League, is, and will be a great achievement. That a club the size of Stanley can compete with the likes of Bradford, Gillingham, Port Vale, Shrewsbury etc. on a weekly basis is a testament to the great work being done by JC and JB.

That clubs such as Grimsby, Wrexham and Luton are in a league below also shows the outstanding achievement of this small east lancashire Club.

Roll on Saturday and let the festivities begin.:alright:

.

MY personal opinion....... agree that whilst it's going to be a hard season, 22nd has to be the very, very bare minimum. There's far worse sides in this league. Talk about 22nd being the equivalent of winning the league is a bit like saying " well ,we might as well go along with what everyone is saying, we'll probably go down, but let's give it a damn good go !!"

Let's not get grandiose ideas, however, set the target too low, and you're in danger of setting the acceptable standard or result as too low. To me, the mindset has to be..."52 points is the goal, after that , the earlier we achieve that 52 points, then we can revise the targets." I prefer 52 points, as it is a target with a little more insurance and makes survival a lot more certain:o

Motivation won't be a problem, as we all know we've got the best two men at the helm who will get the best out of what they have to work with.:D

Added to that, I'm sure our Management and players alike, will have more than enough motivation provided to them by all the other gloom and doom merchants, namely the press and the pundits, who have fully expected us to go down every season since our return to the league.:D

Looking at the league, I'd think that 17th or 18th is a bit more realistic a minimum target, as there's at least four sides in the list in League Two, discounting Cheltenham & Macc (who will probably be down there in the mix )who I'd expect us to perform as well as, if not better than:).

Assuming that the registration of those we've agreed contracts goes ahead, I happen to think, that we're only a couple of players short of a side that will better last season.By that, I mean a couple of strikers and another centre half, along the lines of what Coley has already said.:o

To me, finishing in a better position than last term, would be an achievement. I expect a long, hard season, but would like to think that we'll be safe come next April '11 and looking forward to building onwards and upwards for season 2011-12 !!!!

Coley will, assuming the wage constraints permit, be able to sign a couple on loan and there is of course, the mystery midfielder who is due to sign, who if the L.E.T (Friday 30/07/10) is to be believed, is apparently such a prospect, that the club are unwilling to diverge upon this lads identity until all the signing details are completed.

So, summing up, I'll settle for safe for early April, 52 points +, a decent cup run and a few quid in the bank and a few more straying down to the Crown to bump up the overall attendances..........

As the great man says..... "keep the faith" ......he certainly has or else he himself (and J.B.) would have gone elsewhere themselves!!!!:alright:

We have some tough opening fixtures.
It would be easy for the fans to get on the players backs as the team is relativly new and will take time to grow and develop together.
Furthermore, its a small squad and I am concerned we lack a 15 goal a season striker.
I dont think its a lack of ambition to say 22nd is success, all things are relative.
However, I also share the opinion JC and JB may work wonders again and get us nearer to the top half than bottom.
See you all saturday.

I feel we are all setting our expectations low. Yes we have lost Grant, Kempson and Symes. However Symes wasnt as prolific in the second part of the season. Grants shoes are major to fill however we always found shoes in the past - Prendegast > Roberts > Grant.
I feel we should be aiming for improving upon last season.

Nobody had Symes down as a major goalscorer after the loan spell he had before signing!

Re: Fans Mindset for this season

This season is different for me.

Every August since we've been in the FL, it has always been a matter of avoiding relegation come May and if we finished a few places higher or had secured safety by Easter, it was a bonus.

That was also the case last year when we lost five of our first six games, but then the SOS Appeal began, Bobby and Symes started to look like a great pairing at Bury and Billy came off the bench to head the winner against Darlington.

From that point onwards until 60 minutes into the Rochdale game, we had the best (and most entertaining) Stanley team that I have seen in my 25 years at the Crown Ground. We were chasing a playoff place and there was even hope of automatic promotion - we were that good.

Coley & JB did a magnificent job with a paltry playing budget and young, hungry players. And once again they have hardly any budget for players and we have concentrated on youth, of which I am particularly optimistic about our Liverpool Youth team midfielders.

I can't go back to hoping that we will merely avoid relegation. Coley showed the way last year and I'm very excited about the new season and optimistic that we will at least have a chance of a playoff place until Easter.

Saturday can't come quick enough for me!

John and Jimmy have done every season we have been in the league. If I am not mistaken, Stanley have been favourites for the drop every season they have been in the league. I say keep on predicting us to go (so called experts of course) and let the team and management do the talking on the pitch. A record of improvement year on year speaks for itself. Interesting report on that match

Quote:

26 April 2007
Liverpool's class of 2007 wrote their names into Anfield history by retaining the FA Youth Cup at, of all places, Old Trafford.
Steve Heighway's under-18s lifted the trophy after a dramatic penalty shoot-out against United as the 'Theatre of Dreams' became the Theatre of Nightmares for a generation of Mancunians.

Having lost the first leg at Anfield 2-1, the boys went into the game with a mountain to climb.
Spirit, maturity and poise would be needed to prevail, and that's exactly what Heighway got from his fledgling stars.
Liverpool had to be patient on the night, with the game getting off to a cagey start. United doubled up on dangerous wingers Jimmy Ryan and Ray Putterill, making it hard for the visitors to penetrate.
Youth Cup veteran Craig Lindfield could perhaps have done better on the one occasion Ryan did manage to get the ball into the box during the first half.

Liverpool's rhythm was nearly disrupted further four minutes after the restart when Febian Brandy found himself one-on-one with 'keeper David Roberts. It took a fine save to keep the scoresheet blank.

It seemed finally we had a game on our hands when two minutes later Lindfield crafted a marvellous chance inside the United box. The Reds number nine was denied by the post, with strike-partner Ryan Flynn unable to direct the rebound into the net.

But then came the moment the thousands of travelling Merseysiders had been waiting for when Robbie Threlfall, who scored an own goal to let United back into the contest 10 days earlier, went from zero to hero by sending an unstoppable left-foot volley into the back of Ron-Robert Zieler's net.
With the away-goals rule not applying in Youth Cup games, the tie was heading for extra-time.

Putterill had different ideas, mind, and he nearly doubled the Reds' advantage on the night in the closing stages with a sublime curling shot which crept agonisingly wide of Zieler's goal.

Liverpool perhaps came closest to clinching victory in extra-time when Lindfield turned the United defence inside-out before lashing a low drive goalwards. But, for the second time of the evening, the young marksman was denied by the post.

With the 120 minutes up, United won the toss, with Magnus Eikrem stepping up to take the first penalty only to be denied by a fine save from Roberts.
Seven successful kicks later it was 4-3, meaning Sam Hewson had to score or the cup was going to Merseyside. He missed, and Liverpool were going home with their third FA Youth Cup.
