Carling Cup first round
Venue: Keepmoat Stadium Date: Tuesday, 10 August Kick-off: 1945 BST
Coverage: BBC Sport website, BBC Radio 5 live, BBC local radio & highlights on The League Cup Show

TEAM NEWS

Doncaster boss Sean O'Driscoll will be without midfielder Simon Gillett, who is suspended after being sent off on his debut at Preston on Saturday. Fellow new signing Josh Payne may make his debut in Gillett's place.

Accrington Stanley will give forward Rory Boulding a fitness test after he limped off against Aldershot at the weekend. Striker Craig Lindfield is another injury doubt so Andy Parkinson and Chris Turner may be brought in.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

• Doncaster have met Accrington Stanley 41 times. They have won 22 games, lost nine and 10 have been drawn.
• The sides have never previously met in the League Cup.
Stanley have only registered one victory on Doncaster soil. They triumphed 2-1 in Division Three North in April 1924; their very first meeting.

Doncaster

Since returning to the Football League in 2003, Doncaster have only failed to progress beyond the first round once (losing to Notts County in 2008).
• That was also the last time the South Yorkshire club were eliminated by a League Two club.

Accrington

They have never won a League Cup tie away from home.
• This is Accrington's fifth season in the League Cup. They are aiming to reach the second round for the third time.
• Nottingham Forest (2006) and Walsall (2009) are the only clubs Stanley have knocked out of the competition in their history.

Thanks for starting this thread Shaker, you are now our lucky mascot in this comp!! :) :)

Here are the clarification police...

Phil Edwards did NOT touch the ball for the second goal - meaning it is Craig Lindfield's.

Coley said that he thought they could play better and was disappointed with how much they gave the ball away.

It was a deflection off Sean Hessey for their goal.

But who cares eh?

A great night!

No trouble.
Went outside and the so called donny firm squared up then ran away, just a bunch of child rats.

The game

first half - we didnt pressure the ball, they had lots of possession but didnt create much.
Our left flank was vunerable and our forwards couldnt hold up a feather.

DAV007 10-08-2010 22:09

Re: vs Doncaster Match Thread

Second half

we pressured the ball higher up the field, despite going behind the team showed maturity and didnt panic.
The subs made a huge difference giving the team width and creating chances.
Why they didnt end the game with ten men is baffling.

What the team lacks in ability and skill from last season, it more than makes up for in attitude and effort.

Good game lads and a fully deserved win, its nice to see a team come and have a go! was very impressed with your support to they more than matched the useless lot we call supporters at the keepmoat! is there any wonder I prefer away games! well after Saturdays awesome performance away at Preston and the forever growing injury list I knew your lads were going to be far from pushovers. I think we started the game with 5 players that started Saturday and a bench that was scarily short of anything as back up, we had been warned that our bench would be mostly youth teamers and we werent dissapointed (I am not makin excuses by the way) and from the disply tonight I think we have no strength in depth! our best player tonight in my eyes was Mustapha Dumbuya who I think looks a prospect apart from him and maybe Joc we were not good lol! your boys seemed up for it and got everything you deserved maybe it should have been worse when Robbie Clark got away with a red when he pulled your guy down !! another poor ref! anyways good luck for the next round hope you get a good tie the team who knocks us out usually does ha ha! ps I walked back to the car and saw no trouble?? I can only apologise for the morons if there was ! it was prob the same idiots who booed a team who was a bit mish mash and included a 16 year old kid up front lol nothing as fickle as Rovers fans!

What an absolutely fantastic result. Congratulations Coley,J.B. & to all the lads tonight !!!:D

Now for a decent draw, hopefully against a big club away from home and the chance for a few quid to go into Coley's coffers. After all, wasn't he promised money from cup runs goes towards strengthening the team ???

Now get your act together O'Neill. Give Coley & Bell their contracts. Back them with a few extra quid to dip in the transfer market, before the transfer window closes, to strengthen what already looks to have the semblance of a damn good side and who knows....we all could start dreaming of play-offs and maybe better.:D

Re: vs Doncaster Match Thread

Hey guys. Donny supporter here.

Thought you guys deserved the win tonight. What your side lacked in quality, they more than made up for in effort and hunger to win, and I think you should be encouraged by that for the season ahead. Our players really didn't have the desire to win the game tonight, and it was clear that the Accy players wanted it more. I can understand why we played so badly though, as we have a small squad which is currently decimated by injuries, so we had a team of strangers out there tonight, and even had to fill the bench with four 17 year olds from the youth team. We ended up with a centre-back in midfield, quite a few players making their first ever appearance and Brooker up front who hasn't played any football for 18 months due to a long-term injury. However, it was still a team that I would have expected to win the game, so your players did very well to come out on top tonight.

If your players keep putting in the hard work that they did tonight, then you should be in for another decent season.

Also, well done to the 150 or so Accy fans that made the journey down tonight. I have to credit you for the backing you gave your team.

Good luck in the next round and all the best for the rest of the season.

EDIT - Got to add, if the stories that some of your fans got ambushed are true, then I can only apollogise on behalf of every decent Doncaster supporter. Every club has their idiots, and we're not all like that. Once again, good luck for the season.

Redraine 11-08-2010 00:10

Re: vs Doncaster Match Thread

What a night! Contrary to what Coley said, for me one of the most impressive parts of our play was the composed way we played the ball out of defence when Donny put us under pressure. That's what I have been waiting to see from my team for a long time. How does Coley turn cast-offs and journeymen into such impressive winners? The trouble at the end was when some Donny fans tried to ambush us as we made our way back to the coach. At least one bottle was thrown but fortunately there was a high mesh fence in the way, but it could have been a bit nasty. It's an obvious ambush spot and the police should have been aware of it beforehand.

BBC report:-

"Craig Lindfield grabbed an extra-time winner to earn League Two Accrington a shock victory over Championship side Doncaster in the Carling Cup. Having dominated the first half, the hosts took the lead after the break when Josh Payne drilled in the opener.
However, Stanley substitute Chris Turner fired in from 12 yards against the run of play to force extra time."

Absolutely magnificent performance both on and off the pitch. The team played superbly well from start to finish against a pretty decent Championship outfit.

The Ultra's were "different class". None stop for 120 minutes (135 minutes actually, they carried on under the stand at half time).

The night could have been spoilt by a handful of adolescent chavs in Doncaster shirts after the match, but they soon scarpered once they realised they weren't actually old enough to intimidate anyone. No need for it though. They embarrased Doncaster Rovers for that.

Brilliant night though and a real season setter upper!! Roll on Saturday, a trip to The Cobblers is now a must.

It will be after tonights matches because they have to wait to see who gets seeded.

Here's the options;

Seeded Group: Everton, Birmingham, Blackburn, Stoke, Fulham, Sunderland, Bolton, Wolves, Wigan, West Ham, Newcastle, West Brom, Blackpool, Burnley, Hull, Portsmouth, Leicester, Swansea, Middlesbrough, Ipswich, Watford, Preston

The three other seeded clubs will be Cardiff, Reading and Sheffield United should they win through but should any of them lose the seeded places will be taken, in priority, by Scunthorpe, Crystal Palace and Norwich.

Unseeded Group: Leeds, Millwall, Sheffield Wednesday, Peterborough, Huddersfield, Southampton, Colchester, Brentford, Milton Keynes Franchise,, Leyton Orient, Tranmere, Notts County, Rochdale, Southend, Morecambe, Port Vale, Northampton, Shrewsbury, Bradford City, Accrington, Crewe, Oxford

The three unseeded clubs to be added will be Scunthorpe, Crystal Palace and Norwich, although they will be replaced in this group by Burton, Torquay and Hartlepool should any of them win their games tonight.

Seeing as I'd already registered I thought I'd better revisit. Congratulations on last night which you more than deserved, regardless of our shortcomings of which there are many and which are being disected on the Rovers board.

As for the quotes above, please don't take it as a sign of disrespect. Four of the starting eleven (Sullivan, O'Connor, Friend and Lockwood) started at Preston while Sheils, Fairhurst, Payne, Dumbaya, Hird and Brooker were on the bench at PNE. Martis and Hayter also started at Preston but started on the bench last night. Of the others a mixtures of injuries (Coppinger, Oster, Wilson), suspension (Gillet), international call ups (Stock) and resting some who either hadn't had a full pre-season or who had injuries at the end of last season and weren't ready for three games in a week (Sharp, Woods).

Last night just shows that at Championship level we can compete with our first team, but our reserves are nowhere near the level required and were rightly put to the sword by a clever, hard working and attractive league two side. The fact that our bench was full of youth teamers and an unfit Hayter just goes to show our lack strength in depth having invested in quality (Stock and Sharp being the headliners) rather than bodies for the squad.

Good luck in round two. :)

Just thought I'd mention (because I don't think anyone else has - I could be wrong) the stewards.
Well done! They didn't enforce the "sit down" rule and, as far as I know, they didn't hassle the Ultras or anyone else at all. Thoroughly pleasant chaps. The only times they had anything to complain about were when our supporters were standing on seats, which is fair enough.
So, well done again!

A fantastic night, and well worth the journey. In recent years, I've seen us raise our game against supposedly superior opposition (Watford, Wolves, QPR, Fulham - I missed Leeds) only to be disappointed with the final outcome. Happily that didn't happen last night.

I too would disagree with Coley. I thought we played some excellent football. It's difficult to single out individuals in such a great team performance but Phil Edwards had to be the Man of the Match for me. Ray Putterill was a close second but I think Luke Joyce also deserves a mention. He was always in the right place at the right time and his distribution was excellent.

I agree with the comment about the excellent stewards. Maybe the Cheltenham safety officer should visit the Keepmoat and see how stewarding SHOULD be done.
