Former Liverpool Players
I am currently working on an upcoming article for a Liverpool fansite which will track the progress of loaned out and former Liverpool FC players.
As part of this article I need the opinions of fans of clubs these players have played for, so could I ask you gentlemen to tell me your opinions of Peter Cavanagh, Jimmy Ryan, Andy Parkinson, Ray Putterill, John Miles, Dean Bouzanis, Ian Dunbavin, Andy Owens and Craig Lindfield I know that's asking a lot! But any feedback on the players would be greatly appreciated. Thanks lads. |
Re: Former Liverpool Players
what about charlie barnett ? , and sean mc conville was there until he was around 16
|
Re: Former Liverpool Players
Yeah, those two as well please. Left them out by mistake.
|
Re: Former Liverpool Players
Jimmy, Charlie,Razor, and Craig were part of Heighways dream team,Local lads and great players, but Benitez wanted top foreign kids(who in my opinion were not as good as these) and they were released and Heighway left.
Jimmy and Charlie were the best central midfielders at there age group, but liverpool retained Jay Spearing, who was a 5-5" centre back and turned him into a central midfielder. You need a certain amount of luck and the coaches need to take a chance, you cant tell me these lads training with your Gerards, and and carraghers(who was a average midfielder) ever day could easily play at prem level,Look at Phil Jones at Blackburn,A centre back playing in midfield,is he better than Jimmy?,In my opinion not!! What will hinder these lads progression is the lack of quality training facilities, that really needs addressing, |
Re: Former Liverpool Players
I know you cant keep everyone, but when they left liverpool,I watched the reserves play on quite a few times, and they lacked passion and desire that the liverpool lads gave them(and quality!).
How many of them are in the first team,or indeed still playing at Liverpool? People tried to copy Aresnal and cherry pick the best kids in europe, but there is no guarntees with foreign kids, but you will be amazed how many local kids are now starring for Barca first team, and other class youngsters waiting in thw wings. Liverpools loss is Accis gain, and credit must go to the gaffer, they say scousers always stick together!!! |
Re: Former Liverpool Players
Thanks mate, but what I'd like is your opinion on the individual players, so that I can show how they are rated by their current clubs.
|
Re: Former Liverpool Players
sweeting,here goes then
Peter Cav; not really seen him play, but is a legend at Acci who captained them,Now at Fleetwood Jimmy Ryan; One of best young players i have seen and predict he will play in prem in the next 5 years Andy Parkinson;Coming to the end of his career but still a class player, think he played at wembley for tranmere Ray Putterall;class act and will defo play at an higher level maybe championship or above John miles;reminds me of matt le tiss, everybody complains of his work ethic then scores a wonder goal!,at fleetwood now Dean Bozz;never lived upto to his reputation as one of the best under 19 keepers in the world Ian Dunbavin;good shot stopper, but always in and out of team suggests consistency has stopped him going any further Andrew Owens;looks a class act,but not played much due to injury Charlie Barnett;same as razor, but only himself will stop his progression Sean mac;prob end up a decent first div player in the next few years These are my own views and no doubt others will disagree |
Re: Former Liverpool Players
Agree on most of those, football19.
Didn't know McConville was at Liverpool. I think the only way Sean will progress through the leagues is if he's developed as an Adam Johnson type winger; he can whip in some beautiful crosses from either side but has too slight a frame to play in other attacking positions. Think League One will be his ceiling. Just a bit more on Peter Cavanagh. Personally I always thought he was too good for non-league or basement League football. A clever modern full-back but strong in the tackle. He was a fantastic captain but had his career hampered by injury and blemished by a farcical FA trial. Many disagree on here but it's my view and I'm not alone with it. :) Oh, and what about Steve Hollis? John Durnin? Mike Marsh?! ;):) |
Re: Former Liverpool Players
Cheers for that lads, good stuff!
|
Re: Former Liverpool Players
Shakermaker,I am pretty sure mc conville never got offered a yts at liverpool, but i remember him playing up front with Linfield upto under 16 level.
I recall him having a great touch but was small and lacked a yard of pace(always had something to say! i think its in the scouse genes). Playing for skem probably allowed him grow and toughen up,whilst not under as much pressure. I still think hes not filled out yet and theres more to come |
Re: Former Liverpool Players
well football19 if ya think sean mcs toughened up, we will have to disagree, fer me thats his biggest failing.
|
Re: Former Liverpool Players
Cashman i worded that wrong !,what i meant was he get tougher than he was with experience,he will never be a Roy Keane, that will never be his game, but get a few "water carriers" around him and he will blossom,I believe hes one of the best finishers in training and its only time before he does it consistantly in the first team.
He may perfect the "toe tackle" lol |
Re: Former Liverpool Players
I also have been told as i was tellin a few the other week, that hes the best finisher,in training, so surprisingly he gets some brownie points off me fer that.:D;)

Re: Former Liverpool Players
Jeff, thats a bit harsh!!,Acci have got a lot of players now with good technique and strike a lovely ball,ie Jimmy, charlie,Razor,Gornell,Joycie etc...
He must have something about him to be rated as a finisher. I cant get my head around why a lot of people still have a pop at him,in reality hes only a young lad learning his trade and his goal return for a midfielder this season is up with anyone in the league |

By the way, I do not dislike Macca, but I do understand the feelings of Cashy/Jeff and Co ;) :) |
Re: Former Liverpool Players
Can't agree with that Val. I used to manage a football team, albeit at a somewhat lower level than the Football League, but I'd choose Sean Mac over Turner any day. I just don't happen to be a bandwagon jumper. Turner, to me, has gained his reputation by NOT being in the team --- i.e. "he's got to be better than what IS in there." In my humble opinion, he just isn't! He COULD prove me wrong, in time, and I really hope he does, but I've seen little to inspire me so far this season.
|
Re: Former Liverpool Players
have to disagree oldgobbin, i rated turner when he was in the side, seems ages back now, sean mac in fairness has improved this season somewhat, wereas turner just comes on fer a few mins as sub, in my opinion merits a run of a few games then fair comparison can be made.:)

In a 4-4-2 Chris should walk into the Stanley starting eleven, he has the speed to beat his man and is probably the best crosser of the ball at the Club, we are playing whatever system at the moment meaning only one up front with Sean given the "Lionel Messi" role ala popping up here & there, if we are to provide like for like comparisons then Chris needs to be given a chance at that role. |

Re: Former Liverpool Players
oh dear,I think i must go against public opinion and totally agree with oldgobbin.
You cant live or base your reputation on what you did two years ago. If he was good enough and puts 110% in training,he would be in the team. I believe he is a cracking lad,but everytime i have seen him play, he flatters to deceive, indeed in one game, cant recall who against, his first five touches,he miss controlled 2 and gave posession awya with 3 !!, i remember thinking " is he taking the ****". Obviously some of you remember him playing well, but you still have to perform in training and put in mom displays in the reserves,to get a recall. To say hes the best crosser in the club is open to debate,in my opinion hes way behind Ryan and Mc conville ( even putterill) |

Re: Former Liverpool Players
Shakermaker, the point i was trying to make was, after reading these forums, i was expecting to see the second divisions "ronaldo",only to be disappointed.
I have seen hundreds of talented kids disappear into non-league,indeed a recent PFA article raised concerns that of the 600 lads who enter pro football each year,500 "disappear"before they turn 20, Some go into non-league,some just pack it in. If you want to make a career, they have to maximise there potential, and aim as high as possible up the pyramid as there are always younger, hungrier lads waiting behind them for there chance. I do hope Chris takes this on board and becomes a top player before it passes him by |

This is a lad who had the opportunity to go elsewhere as others have and gone but he didn't he showed faith in the Club for giving him the opportunity in the first place. |

I understand that Sean McConville was at Everton.

Re: Former Liverpool Players
Pendle red,its not harsh, its reality!,kids who break into the first team sometimes think its easy and they have made it,THEY HAVE NOT !!.
In my opinion, you shouldnt be classed as a football pro till you have played at least 100 first team games! Look at some players profiles and they are playing 8 or 9 games each season, get released, have a good trial, get signed and the cycle starts again. If i could give Chris any advice it would be listen and trust what the coaches are asking you to do,train like a mad man,and observe what is required from him when the opposition have the ball,he is a talented kid but seems to think he gets judged by how many men he can beat or how many crosses he can deliver, this is not always the case, thats only a small part of a team game( pointless beating a man if you can pass around him, pointless crossing if theres no one there!!!) |
Re: Former Liverpool Players
haggis 316, sean was defo at liverpool, the lad at that time for everton was JP Kissock, think he played for Acci, another who thought he made it(he was good!) and is now driving a taxi
|
Re: Former Liverpool Players
John Paul Kissock now plays for southport
|
Re: Former Liverpool Players
i am glad hes fixed up,but he was talked up as the next rooney at everton, and played in the scottish prem league at an early age,Indeed i am sure he played for england at school boy level.
The point i was trying to make is footballs an unforgiving industry,if you think you have made it and become big time, when in reality you have not. |
Re: Former Liverpool Players
thats a very valid point football19, have known a few of those personally.
|
Re: Former Liverpool Players
I think football 19 talks rubbish most of the time but I have to agree on most things about chris. But in his defence most wide players are judged on how many crosses they get in it isn't his fault if others don't get in the box. That said I don't understand the clamour for him to play.
|
Re: Former Liverpool Players
thanks for the vote of confidence rude dog!!,
I presume its my opinions you find rubbish, fair enough, its just opinions, Being an expert yourself, any chance of giving us 8 results for saturday and then i will conceed you are the font of all football knowledge !!!!! |
Re: Former Liverpool Players
Peter Cavanagh, Former club captain and 1 of my ex-favourite players until the well publicised problem. On the pitch was a good full back on his day and could hit a superb free kick but too injury prone and left at the right time.
Jimmy Ryan, Currently our best player by a country mile in my opinion. Basically runs the midfield, scores goals and has an unbelievable work rate. Time will tell how long we can keep him. Andy Parkinson, Has had a decent impact in the squad and has scored a couple of goals helping the cause. Ray Putterill, Great to see he is over his injury problems and was on fire at the start of the season, such a shame he was banned as it seems to have affected his game. However against Oldham he was outstanding and fingers crossed he can re-discover his touch. John Miles, Without doubt the laziest player I have ever seen, not only at Stanley, but around the world! How on earth he ever played 95 games for us is beyond me, as he must have put in no more than 8 good performances. A goal scoring midfielder???? 95 league games for Stanley, 6 League goals. Dean Bouzanis, A very good young prospect of a keeper, and was part of that magical run at the start of 2010. I will certainly never forget him running the full length of the pitch to celebrate with the lads when Symes scored against Fulham. Unfortunately 1 mistake away at Northampton cost him his place and he was in and out of the side all season after that. A shame he is about 5th choice at Anfield as I believe he could make it. Ian Dunbavin, I will hold my hand up and admit he has improved beyond all recognition this season. Brilliant shot stopper and expert at penalties, he still doesnt half give you nightmares on occasion though with his decision making still being an issue. Andy Owens, Young defender only seen on a few occasions but looks to have decent potential. Craig Lindfield, Looked a fantastic young talent at Liverpool and whilst on loan at Notts County a few seasons ago. Seems to have lost a yard of pace for some reason and fingers crossed a loan spell at Kidderminster can re-ignite his passion and fitness. Charlie Barnett, 1 of Coleman's best summer signings for me alongside Hessey. Similar to Jimmy Ryan a ball winning and creative midfielder. Great fitness and just hoping he can carry on how he has been playing, especially away at Vale in the Cup loss where he ran the game. |
Re: Former Liverpool Players
for me the clamour regarding Chris Turner stems from him winning something like five man of the match awards in his first eight games for us! His debut at Rochdale was fantastic (although we got stuffed I think) and he always had the ball, always looked to do something positive with it and beat the man.
Pleasing to watch football for me does not involve weaving pretty little patterns with the ball and seeing how many triangles one can make - it involves goal mouth scrambles and wingers provide these. "If tha dunt punt it forrard tha'll ne'er scooer" as some owd biddy probably once said |
Re: Former Liverpool Players
oh yeah and then after that fantastic mid season cameo he turned down at least a couple of offers from higher league teams to stay and reward Stanley for giving him his chance through the Youth set up. To thank him for this he got injured and has never had a run since
|
Re: Former Liverpool Players
Smudge,Cant fault any of your opinions there!,Although i still feel Razor is not as fit as he was,and looks to be carrying a bit of excess weight, judging by pics of him at the start of the season.
Think if he gets his engine in order, his undoubted class will once again shine through |
