Gillingham Thread
Alright dudes
Due to a pressing appointment with a 250-odd mile trip to Kent, you've got an early start to the match thread today. Here is your preview - ASFC News Story > 3919 Here are some pre-match thoughts from Alex Cisak - ASFC News Story > 3920 And here's a bit of Coley for you to listen to (some interesting thoughts in there about seeing similarities with the Conference winning season) YouTube - 11-03 coleman gillingham.wmv If you're not making the trip to Priestfield tomorrow I'd appreciate your company. If you're on Facebook, like this page Accrington Stanley | Facebook and you'll get match updates, if you're on Twitter (or just want to get the updates) go to Accrington Stanley (ASFCofficial) on Twitter or alternatively I'll be contributing here too. Hopefully a bit more preview stuff to come Dan |
Re: Gillingham Thread
Morning all
Hotel room with a brew for me at the moment - off to Gillingham shortly and will be with you from Priestfield from 2 ish. In the meantime, I've seen that there's a real mix of predictions for today's game. Given the importance of the game (a "Cup final" says Coley) what team would you pick if you were in charge? Dan |
Re: Gillingham Thread
morning Dan, expenses eh? must be with the bbc!
Given the importance of the game I'd stick with the winning team, although care must be taken to rotate a player or two (such as Jimmy Ryan keeps looking more and more injured/jaded). Better to lose a player for a game than for 3 or 4 as happened last year. I'd also say that if a game is 'losable' then I personally think this is it! Ok so they occupy the place we want, but we have four games in hand on these monkeys so would still have ample opportunity to pull it around. Obviously we want to win as many as possible but this, for me, is chalked in the 'can afford to lose' column. 3-0 please to the Reds! |
Re: Gillingham Thread
Morning Dan. It's going to be a tough game, this. We can beat anyone on our day, certainly in this league, but the Gills are more than capable of bringing an end to our unbeaten run at Priestfield. BBC are reporting that Akinfenwa is unlikely to start however, which a major advantage for us if true.
As far as the line-up goes, I wouldn't change much to be honest. I have a lot of confidence in our defence after their recent form. I just hope there is more cohesiveness in our forward play today than in recent games. But I'm sorry, Jimmy Ryan needs resting. I'd go for: Cisak Winnard Edwards Hessey Jacobson Procter Joyce McConville Craney Putterill Gornell |

Re: Gillingham Thread
I tend to disagree with Macca on this one lose this and I fear the gap will be too big to pull back even with games in hand, a win or draw and we are right in the shake-up for the play-offs.
|
Re: Gillingham Thread
Never mind the playoff's, ill be happy with a club itself!
|
Re: Gillingham Thread
Afternoon all
I'll have the team news for you as soon as I can (it's another multitasking day for me - I'll do my best!) As for expenses - aye, the Bank of Dan Jewell!!! |
Re: Gillingham Thread
It's a warmish, overcast day here in Kent. A smattering of Stanley fans already in the uncovered scaffolding end of Priestfield. Players are just warming up.
|
Re: Gillingham Thread
listen to the game via the gills radio, its a free 14day trail so just remember to cancel the DD afterwards :)
Gillingham | Welcome |
Re: Gillingham Thread
John Coleman has named the same starting eleven that defeated Stockport in midweek for this afternoon's trip to Gillingham.
Stanley: Cisak, Winnard, Edwards, Hessey, Jacobson, Procter, Joyce, Ryan, Craney, McConville, Gornell Subs: Dunbavin, Long, Lindfield, Putterill, Parkinson, Murphy, Smyth |
Re: Gillingham Thread
Right then, lets get out there & kick some Southern Butt today lads, good solid performance & a cracking away win please so it makes sitting up until the wee hours to see the results worth while ! :D

up the reds!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Gillingham Thread
Glad I brought extra layers. It may be warm at pitch level, but it's bloody freezing up here in the top of the stand!!!

Loaning players and then not playing them seems a bit of a waste of money to me. And where has Owens dissapeared to again? |
Re: Gillingham Thread
Ill be amazed if we are paying anything for him mate.
Burnley arent exactly skint after last seasons premier league exploits. He has been injured twice since he has been back, which is why owens was on the bench as hes a center half. |
Re: Gillingham Thread

I agree that we have too many players for our current financial state, but we only have three centre-halves who have had any meaningful playing time in the league (Edwards, Hessey and Long). It would make more sense to release Smyth & Owens than to fail to take up the chance to loan the proven Long for the rest of the season, even if he does have to bench it while injured or others are in good form. |
Re: Gillingham Thread
Bit unfair on Hessey, he has been immense these last few games.
Good point about the 3 recognised center backs. No sense to release Smyth, as Leam is crocked, again :( |
Re: Gillingham Thread
For what it's worth, I agree with Shaker.
Let's not forget that Phil Edwards is a booking from a two match ban. Then the strength in depth will show. Smyth has been out on loan, impressed and won a place on the bench. Maybe Owens will have to do the same??? |
Re: Gillingham Thread
Teams are out.
Come on Stanley! |

Re: Gillingham Thread
Gills commentary team says that we are causing their defence no end of problems

Open start, chances at both ends. Superb response from the Reds though, particularly after the penalty miss
|
Re: Gillingham Thread
"its end to end, looks like they've picked up where they left off at Accrington"
|
Re: Gillingham Thread
... all you can hear behind the commentators is "duh duh duh duh duh, duh duh duh duh duh, Gornell, oh Terry Gornell ........"

Re: Gillingham Thread
Macca - I can confirm. There's more noise in Accy library, save for 50 or so Reds
|
Re: Gillingham Thread

Jack Payne appears to have lost his rag, after catching Craney late and receiving a yellow card, then getting involved in pushing and shoving an Accrington player

Ball in from the right, Barcham was the man over at the back post. Clipped it beyond Cisak to make it 2-1.

Re: Gillingham Thread
Just realised the earlier error (McConville "second")
Simply an input error. Obviously it was the equaliser! |

|
Re: Gillingham Thread
What's the reason ? Are the lads being outclassed or is it a problem of their own making by not playing as they can ?
|
Re: Gillingham Thread
come on Stanley corner lets have it!!!

Re: Gillingham Thread
Quote:
just sounds like fair do's on the commentary Dave. We seem to be impressing the commentary team with our work rate and breaking from midfield, but same old story that we are not converting possesion into chances. Ryan off, Lindfield on |

corner again, last ditch challenge took the ball off Macca's toe
|
Re: Gillingham Thread
66: Stanley sub. Ryan off, Lindfield on

Re: Gillingham Thread

Re: Gillingham Thread
Craney booked for gobbing off to the ref. Blame Dan for telling their hacks that he is prone to stropping!
|
Re: Gillingham Thread
the game seems to have petered out now from our point of view. They seem slightly worried about the Gills fitness as they have had to really huff and puff to match our work rate this half
"Accrington are being beaten at their own game" Barcham man of the match |
Re: Gillingham Thread
Proctor booked for dissent,
