Starting XI -v- Gills????

Do not want to start a match thread, but please merge this after kick off SM!!!

Leams' first XI??? Any thoughts?????

I will kick off...............

Bavo

Coid Deano(C) Toto Kev Mc

Luke
Charlie Hughesy

Craig Podge
Smith

Subs:- Murdoch, Bender,Willis, Evans, Craney!!

Charlie and Hughesy can float around, plus Podge and Craig can swap flanks!!!

Craney and Micah add a different dimension from the bench!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bring on The Gills..

ON STANLEY ON

I wouldn't disagree with that team, Joe. My only difference would be on the bench where I would prefer Guthrie to Craney.

:)Couple off changes for me Joe,Tom Benders is still suffering from a hamstring problem!! And one from either Hessey who i think is fit again or willis on to replace Toto who i'd drop to the bench, think craig should start definitely:)

Bender not in contention I understand - hamstring

This might need to be "Win Ugly" - so pile on the experience wherever we can.

I'd have Hessey in for Toto if only for that reason; Toto on the bench for Tom. Not seen Smith play but reports are good so start with him, with Micah or Craney (depending) as a Plan B option .........

Think Leam might well have a Plan B. And maybe a C, D and E as well ......

Up the Stanley! :D

Still thought Hess was injured, if Hess is OK, he would start for me, Toto on the bench and if Tom is injured, then he makes way for Toto.....

Who knows, Leam may start with Bavo in holding midfield and Toto as lone striker  :D :D :D

That would be the one for me too Shaker, as for plans A,B and C I hope it don,t include hoof ball as we saw against Barnet!!!!!!!!!!!! one of Coley,s only failings IMHO get the ball on the grass u reds thats what its there for.

Pendle Red 28-01-2012 09:31

Re: Starting XI -v- Gills????

Only changes from shakers for me would be Willis in for Toto and Charlie in for Murphy.

Coupled with the strongest bench we can muster so we have options and if needs be it gives Leam options to mix it up either by going more going defensive or more attacking.

Certainly looking forward to the game and hopefully pushing into the top seven at least for a day with three points against the Gills:)

Re: The belated Gillingham match thread

Strange how a comedy of errors and a terrible refereeing performance led to such a thrilling game.

Danny Coid was fantastic for us at full back with little or no protection from Micah Evans throughout the game. Leam ought to teach Evans 'tracking back for dummies' soon as the lad only looks interested when on the ball, which is only one part of the game. I hope Craig Lindfield's injury clears up quickly so he can return to the fold.
Contrast that with the brilliant Michael Smith who was still galloping around on 90+4 minutes. Smith not only bagged a hat trick and an assist but also blocked a shot which looked certain to go in. His movement, technical ability and awareness impresses me and he seems to be a calm figure which is why goals will come easily for him. He could go far.
Peter Murphy gave a great performance in central midfield alongside the puppet-master Bryan Hughes, bombing forward and adding a lot to our play in the final third. Well done Pete. Luke Joyce was Luke Joyce. Mr Dependable; always there to sweep up, break up and link up the play.
I felt that at times Dean Winnard had to do the job of two centre halves today as Toto looked out of his depth and made mistakes during the most basic of tasks. I'll be a lot happier when Sean Hessey returns. Kevin McIntyre battled fantastically.
Padraig was tireless again and even picked up a bloody nose for his efforts. He deserved a goal but that will come I'm sure.
Ian Dunbavin got the Gills back into the game and he will know that he could've cost us the points today. There was nothing he could've done about the spectacular Gills equaliser to make it 1-1 but the following two were fatal mistakes.

Some heavy work on defensive organisation is needed but with our forward play the way it is, we can beat anyone in this league.

Let's do this.

Well done Leam, Phil and Bryan. A memorable managerial debut!

Pendle Red 28-01-2012 16:44

Re: The belated Gillingham match thread

It should have been five or six by half-time to Stanley as Cashy said a game of two keepers with some howlers.

Some nice stuff in part from Stanley seemed to sit back a little second half and invite the pressure but three valuable points and into seventh position into the league be it for twenty four hours.

Well done Michael Smith on his hat-trick he worked tirelessly up front and got back as well.

I'm of the same mind shaker, If we play as we can None are better, Smith fer me well deserved MoM he was immense today.Thought Toto started well, but faded badly.:)

Pendle Red 28-01-2012 16:48

Re: The belated Gillingham match thread

Only thing I would disagree on Shaker is Coids movement forward excellent but got caught out of position at the back meaning Toto having to come across to cover.

smudgie 28-01-2012 16:53

Re: The belated Gillingham match thread

WOW, what a game. Think I have just about recovered, no finger nails left, thats for sure!!

So pleased for the lads, they worked their socks off and thought on the balance of play we deserved the win. Coid for me MOM, never missed a ball all game, praying he kips fit from now till May, what an asset to the side he is.

Agreed both keepers had absolute nightmares, fair play to the Gill's manager for not messing about and making the switch, not often you see that. Will Bav's EVER stop having moments of madness??!? :(

Toto looked rather shaky at the back, but to be honest there is nobody else to play there, until Hessey gets fit again, which im hoping is soon!!

Well done Smith and Paddy who ran their balls off, and quite rightly got superb receptions.

Did Smith score the 1st goal, thought it was Murph?!?

Roll on Crewe :)

Redraine 28-01-2012 17:03

Re: The belated Gillingham match thread

What a match! Have to disagree with Shaker on Micah, who I thought was dangerous throughout and was only denied a fantastic goal by their 6'8" substitute goalie at the death. I also thought he put in a good defensive shift too. Some great Stanley performances today with Smith the pick, not just for his goals but also his all-round game. Murphy gave his best performance in a Stanley shirt - just keep him away from the full back position, Leam! Could easily have been 7-1 at half time but the Gills murdered us in the second. We really need to work on our defensive possession play when under pressure, but can't fault the commitment with every player putting his body on the line for the team. Enthralling stuff, with the Clayton End willing the lads to victory with a non stop rendition of "Leam and Phil's red and white army" for the last 15 minutes, but I didn't hear the main stand joining in. No doubt someone will correct me if my ears let me down.

Well done for today's result, it sounds like it was a great game. There were even a few cheers went up at Spotland when we heard you were winning at half time. As you will have heard, a small miracle happened at Spotland this afternoon. It was like watching a different team. JC certainly has a magic touch - we were on fire and it couldn't have been better than against our biggest rivals!

Re: The belated Gillingham match thread

Agree with Shaker on this one !!,wheither it was our game plan to leave the runners, win the ball and attack that space left,I just dont know, but in the first half it worked:)
They was olways going to throw the kitchen sink at us in the second-half,and they didnt disapoint.
Thought we defended really well, but Bavs head just went, which created even more pressure. He will be disappointed with all three goals.
Finally, young Smiths display,I have watched numerous young players in the past,Carroll, sturidge, wellbeck,to name a few and he shown me enough today,to mention him in the same breath at his age.
He will only get better, and maybe key to any success we have this season.----well done young man

Now the dust has settled, you only realise what a great performance it was.We had lost our first choice Centre backs, captain and all the coaching staff,
That, added to a few players who were carrying injuries, just sums up what accrington Stanley are all about.
Don't underestimate how knowledgeable leam and phil are on the coaching side, and IMHO are the people to stabilise and take the club forward,
Regarding bag,he has played a big part in only 7 defeats in 26 games,so hopefully,it's another similar 26 games,I am sure he knows he was at fault, but he's been superb lately

Completely agree. Would not expect Ian to lose his place. His commanding of his area was very good for the most part yesterday. If he didn't have his occasional (and they are getting much more occasional) rushes of blood to the head, he wouldn't be playing at this level. He's been excellent this season.

Having seen both goalkeepers this season with Murdoch playing the first 15 games or so and Bavs the rest i i dont see much in it between them although i have never saw murdoch make a mistake. He must be thinking what he has to do but i do completely agree with shaker bavs shouldnt be dropped. Does anyone know how long smith is on loan for? I thought him and amond were superb and luke joyce must be playing himself into a bigger move.

Murdoch was dropped after the FA Cup defeat at Notts County, when a couple of the goals were of the "goalkeeper could have done better" variety. Not howlers of yesterday's proportions but "disappointing". I thought at the time that he was hard done by to lose his place.

Up till yesterday Bavs has taken his chance and hardly put a foot wrong. In several games he's made crucial saves which changed the course of the match (Burton & Aldershot spring to mind).

Yesterday's gaffe was truly awful but I think Bavs is still well in credit. But I thought the same about Murdoch when he was axed and I agree there really is nothing to choose between the pair.

Murdoch will play against Wigan in the Lancs Cup, gives Leam another chance to take a look at him.

Bav's will ALWAYS have rushes to head, and make no mistake it could have cost us big time yesterday.

Its simple to me, if being realistic n hoping fer play-offs or even better, he aint good enough, end of.

Re: The belated Gillingham match thread

IF Bav's played like he did at Burton every week then he is good enough.

BUT there will always be that fear factor :(

We all know Bavs he has been with us long enough and IMO has improved he commands his area better, his kicking has improved beyond belief and I don,t think he is guilty of as many gaffs these days but Bavs will be Bavs, yesterday is now history and was just one of those days Ian he will be as angry as anybody at what happened.

Bavs has made some tremendous saves this season and not only at Burton. I may be wrong but I'm sure I can recall Murdoch being beaten too easily at his near post on occasions and I also felt he was suspect when facing shots along the ground.

Bavo has been great this season and has improved on last!! Mistakes are made all over the pitch, but most can be covered!!! He has had a below average day, which cost us nowt and made the last 10/15 mins absolutely gripping!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Plays at The Alex for me!!!!

P.S. Freekick in the last few mins and Bavo flew like Superman and punched the ball almost to the halfway line, funny how people have not mentioned that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just got home from the Gills match.....and like everyone else I thoroughly enjoyed the well- planned, well played and well-deserved victory.
Even though, as posted elsewhere, Andy Hess has blasted his team's performance..and made a kind gesture to the travelling fans by way of a reimbursement of their travelling expenses...one thing did cross my mind during the second half of the game . which was that The Gills were not by far the worse side that have appeared at the Crown his season, and that a lot of their overall play bordered on the excellent !.
If this opinion of mine was anywhere near the truth, then it makes the result so much sweeter and important.
It was also good to see that we have up front a big tall player who wants to, and is able to stick the ball in the net.... a pre-requisite for any striker ?.

The Roller-Coaster ride goes on !!.. and would we have it any other way folks ???

Cos those with bad eye sight on the Clayton End might have miised it!!

Yes Bavo is down, he knows he's let TEAM ASFC down; BUT don't you know the error will spur him on to get things right?? Who put out the rallying call to the fans?? After Prince Leam who is the Senior Pro??

For goodness sake WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES!! I can list around a dozen I made on Saturday. No I don't play, 99% will go unnoticed. For goodness back back HRH and OUR boys!!:)

here, here,

As T man says Bavs is the senior pro and has been around the club forever. He is one of the few left who has the club in his heart rather than just a job. Bavs was gutted today and posted as much on Facebook.

One of the things I look for in a player who wears the Red of my club is heart and he has it in abundance. Just like Welchy used to turn to the crowd on corners and implore the noise to rise, just like Craney with his 100 yard sprint at York to celebrate a goal with his own fans, just like every one of us who clutches his crested shirt and screams for more pride and passion. Watch Bavs at the final whistle when we have a win to celebrate and he is dancing and jigging like he has a medal round his neck.

His game has come on leaps and bounds last season (unlucky to be ousted by Cisak) and particularly this season by all accounts. Plays at Crewe for me as well

Even more so when we have a clean sheet.

But, Macca, do you really think he is one of the few who has the club in his heart? It seems to me that it soon becomes a feature of the vast majority of our players that they take the club to their heart. I never hear of any complaints from those who drop to the bench or even are not selected at all. Those who fail to do so are all to obvious - one is currently at Stockport.
