Bristol Rovers match thread

In our current form I can't see why we shouldn't get a result here. After all, we have beaten them already this season and they are not now desperate for points. Peter Murphy to score a last minute special with a bullet header from a Wilson corner!

Difficult to see any points coming from this match but I will live in hope, when you expect nothing anything you do get is a bonus.
The performance against Morecombe was impressive, Stanley quickly closed down and harried the Shrimps when they were in possession of the ball, and as I’ve said many times before I think Stanley look a much better team when Beattie is not on the pitch,

No matter what any of us thinks about any player, at this crucial stage of the season "All" players need full backing from us all in my view.;)

(Sorry Cashy) but if I believe a player is having a negative effect on the teams performances, then given full backing to his team selection would be against the team’s best interest

Looking at the form guide that was posted on another thread, there is absolutely no reason why we cannot get something out of this match. As I am posting this on Tuesday morning prior to the match, it will be interesting to see the results of tonight's matches and what will be required, points wise. However, I will not say we are safe, until the day we mathematically are!!

Re: Bristol Rovers match thread

As things stand mathematically, before tonight's games, any one of eight teams (Daggers downwards) could end up in 24th place.
No-one is yet 'safe', unless by that you include still being at risk.
The Gasheads will be playing for professional pride in front of their last home crowd of the season, and will be looking to repay their fans for a miserable start to the season. Last season's fixture was a painful affair for Stanley, and th'Owd Reds will have to be solid and together to come away with a point. But they can do it.

Sadly I can't go to Bristol as I have to go to a wedding in Newcastle. My daughter is a bridesmade for her best friend. No reason why we can't get something from this game and i am sure the team will be going for it. Shout and sing a bit louder for me please and here's hoping we come away at least with a point if not all three!! COME ON THE REDS!!!:jimbo:

Interesting comments from Franny himself and from Leam on the club website. It shows how important to us are experienced professionals such as Franny and James Beattie.

Why settle for a draw, reckon the boys can do the Rovers as long as they stay focused. It's all about belief & self confidence & over the last few games it's been slowly brimming over & out of the lads. :)

To be honest, I wasn't aware that he made an outstanding save. What I would say, though, is that Tom Aldred was absolutely magnificent this afternoon. Yes, Moly will get the credit for his goal although he was fairly anonymous for the remainder of the game. Aldred, though, was a tower of strength throughout.

How big was todays win? Take a look at the league as it stands now. Aldershot are down and the next six clubs separated by two points, Stanley were the only team "in trouble" who saved themselves. Totally massive win. We can relax, get some easy sleep and look forward destroying Oxford next Saturday. I hope the lads got a nice bonus today.

Potter 20-04-2013 20:26

Re: Bristol Rovers match thread

Great performance from stanley this afternoon.

Lingazi is very good player. If we somehow manage to keep him for next season that'd be brilliant. He was comfortable on the ball today and seemed very good at winning back possession, but not only just doing that but managing to keep the ball too. Also showed some great touches, which was excellent.

The back four looked solid - Aldred and Dean played well as a partnership, Peter was consistent - they attacked down his side a lot in the first half and he dealt with it well. I'm really pleased for Dean and Peter, they've been at the club a long while now, and its great for them to be two of the senior players in a side that stayed up in quite some style.

Lee Molyneux is a super player. Great attitude and is strong as well.

Also, I do think it needs to be said that it seems that the side was well drilled. The back four moved as a unit. I was very impressed with how they didn't give Bristol anything. I know Rovers were safe at this point, but still the lads did their job in not giving anything away.

Towards the end of the game we kept the ball well. Jeffers helped with this. Good touches and pointing out the simple balls to Moly, Lawrence and Luke. You could tell from the 20 minutes he played that he's a classy player. If we can get him signed up for next year I'd be very happy.

Finally I think credit needs to go to Leam and the other coaching staff [and senior players]. It does seem that its a real group effort with quite a few of the lads cajoling and giving instructions from the bench. They've created not only great team spirit, but also a pretty handy side. Leam's signings have all been good - Beattie has 7 goals, Jeffers got a couple in the Wimbledon game, Wilson has been solid, Lingazi has been class, Hughes would have been a good signing had injury not cut his stay short, and Aldred is a good defender and a winner.

Basically those players replaced other lads we had on loan and one or two others we let go of in January. Leam has been quite shrewd in building his own side after I think we were left a bit short of decent pros when Paul Cook left. Leam deserves a hell of a lot of credit for that. When Cooky was made manager I was pleased we'd kind of appointed from within - someone who knew the club. But I do think that Leam was the better candidate from within the club. And I love it that we've got someone managing the side who knows the Stanley way and how unique our club is. This is evident in the fact that Jimmy Bell travelled down and stood with us in the away end as a supporter!

Here's to three points next saturday and hopefully another good season following the Stanley!

If Pompey have a half-decent season, home crowds will probably regularly be in excess of 15000. Over 18000 today  to celebrate the Supporters' Trust victory (and relegation). They'll be very short of cash to begin with though, but with those gates they should strengthen quickly. Be good to get 'em at the Crown (but not at Fratton) on opening day :).

Well my two pence worth......

First of all, well done to Leam and the lads, to keep us in this league for another year is a great achievement. Hopefully we do it 5 games before the end next season ;). To be bottom a few weeks ago and to be within a few points of mid table now is nothing short of brilliant, they certainly are up for a fight.

So to yesterday..... One of my all time favorite away days. Nice people, Nice ground, Nice result :D. They all seemed genuinely happy we had stayed up, so fair play to them.

Linganzi and Molyneux again where a class apart. What would I do to keep them on next year!!! Aldred was an absolute rock at the back again. Essential we try and keep hold of all three.

Chubs had probably his best game between the sticks for us, without doing anything spectacular he looked solid and never missed a ball.

Was great to see the strength in depth we have with the likes of Jeffers and Beattie on the bench. They both seemed to be enjoying it here, wonder if they would extend their stays by 12 months??? :) As there is no doubt it is beneficial to the younger lads having them about.

Looking at the team as a whole and looking at what Leam said after the game yesterday, he wishes the season was starting now. I would have to agree, we could be a match for anybody at the moment and I can only hope we can hold on to the majority of the lads next year.

Roll on Oxford next week, Party time :)

There has been a lot of bad press about football fans over the past couple of weeks with Newcastle, Milwall and Scunthorpe fans all hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons but yesterday showed what proper fans were about.

Okay it was far from being the best atmosphere but the way you applauded our youngsters who had just done the league and cup double and our players as they completed the end of season lap of honour was great to see and the Rovers fans returned it by applauding your players off and chanting you are staying up and the players reaction suggested they really appreciated it.

Both sets of fans mingled in the bar together afterwards and some Accy fans even joined in with the "we all hate City chants".

Congratulations on staying up and I look forward to taking 6 points off you next season in revenge for you doing the double over us this time around ;)

Well done to Leam and the lads. I've been hanging on to the similarities between this season and our first season back in the league but haven't wanted to risk putting anything on the site until we were safe.

First season back
1st 15 games 20 points
2nd 15 games 10 points
3rd 15 games 20 points Safe with one match to play

This season
1st 15 games 21 points
2nd 15 games 10 points
3rd 15 games 23 points Safe with one match to play

I went for a bike ride after yesterdays win. Who did i see on my travels? only the one and only Paul Mullin! He was with his family walking around Memorial Park in Great Harwood. I've seen him around there a few times and always thought of mentioning Stanley to him, but he looks a bit shy so i just smile.:)
On hindsight i should've given him a toot on my bike horn and shouted "C'mon Stanley" to him, perhaps he didn't know about our win and he'd have been pleased to hear about it?;)

Alright men?

I went down to the game yesterday & thought it was a decent performance. The back 4 were good and managed to limit Bristol Rovers to few chances. The midfield worked hard but didn't get much service to the lads up top. Got the result they wanted so fair play.

Thanks to the guys on the coach and in the pub afterwards who were very welcoming (even though I think we nicked someone's usual seat at the back!).

Cheers.

Just got back from the wedding in Newcastle that I had to go to yesterday. It was a great day just for the wedding but when I got the news at the reception about the fantastic Stanley win it really made the day ...just purrrrrrfect!!!!:mosher: The evening wedding party was great and I danced all night revelling in Stanley's glory!!! My daughters friends were lining up to jive with this "old" Stanley Ultra and they were apparently impressed with my stamina and enthusiaism...I really slept like a baby after several pints of celebratory ale too!:music8::Banane10::Banane08::Banane35:
I would just like to add my congratulations to Leam, the players and all the staff and also to all of those loyal Stanley fans who stuck by our team through a seriously dodgy season.
I've said it before...Surviving in The Football League is like winning a trophy for the Stanley.:theband::drunk::ban:
So let's all have a party next week against Oxford.:wave8::Banane35:
Moly again scored a fantastic goal with that mercurial left foot. Sounds like we fully deserved the win from the reports.
WELL DONE LEAM AND PLAYERS AND STAFF AND FANS ONE AND ALL
ON STANLEY ON:jimbo:
