Pompey match thread

Hoping for a great game and result to get us going again at home. This could be the start of a significant stage in a promotion push and it sounds like Coley has got the lads fired up. I have just re-read Phil Whalley's wonderful book "The club that wouldn't die" and it seems to me that we could be on the verge of something big again. I just hope our supporters are up for it!

Let's hope that the rain stays away and that the frost does not set in either!
Desperate to see the team play at home and get a WIN!

I personally don't think rain will be the problem, but snow and ice is another story entirely, although the temperatures look like holding above freezing (only just), like others, I am hoping to see a game this Saturday and the following Tuesday but the weather gods may be jinxing us, though hope not.

Portsmouth themselves didn't get undersoil heating despite spending 7 years in the premier league, the majority of which they didn't have a roof over away fans either.

Since when were clubs in the 4th division expected to have undersoil heating? It won't get cold enough for long enough as it is forecasted. It is hard to see this one being off.

Hello Somerset. Through your Asperger's generated mist, I wonder if you could explain this:

Yeovil Town v Scunthorpe United League 1 clash postponed due to frozen pitch | Scunthorpe Telegraph

Or this:
Yeovil Town v Preston North End: Match called off for safety reasons | Western Daily Press

Was your undersoil heating ineffective? Did someone forget to switch it on?

Or this:

Yeovil Town v Watford: Match postponed - Yeovil Press with Christine Jones Event Photography

A classic reply from someone with Asperger's. Because of their verbal problems, they simply cannot spot irony and humour.

Now listen, Somerset. I've said this before and I'll say it again. You are doing a huge disservice to those suffering from Asperger's syndrome. Many people would previously have had sympathy but you have destroyed that sympathy, thanks to your tedious and absurd posts. Take our advice - just go away.

In regards to our pitch I went to the club today and they said the pitch had no problems re being waterlogged and they are confident the covers will keep any frost off.

Jesus, what is this, the Spanish Inquisition? I am only highlighting the concerns of the Dale fans who worry about the effect the rugby boys have on their pitch. You seem a little bit sensitive from the tone of your posts on behalf of the R.L. Wish I had never mentioned it!

Re: Pompey match thread

Hornets have far more than 10 home games left, the fixture list covers half the season, but one friendly since Sept isn't the problem.

All grounds are inspected before every match, it is the referees job even at pub level, it is the timing of pitch inspections that alert you to the possible problem.

-2 for a few hours with covers should not be a problem, it would be a massive shock if this one was off.

I've lost count. Is it 9 or 10 weeks since we last played at home? This is the worst season ever for us since that winter of 1963! Well it would've been if we hadn't gone out of business the year before.
Ah well, at least we have the Portsmouth fans money as they've already bought their tickets, though i don't think we'll get the extra pay on the day away fans on a re-arranged Tuesday night fixture.
It's not the club's fault. They've done everything possible but it's either p!ssing down or freezing these days. Maybe the Football League will step in and ask us to play at Rovers or Burnley,as a very big backlog is building up!
I wonder what pearls of wisdom yon twonk from Somerset will come out with?

Obviously I'd of liked the game to go ahead as 3 points would be a real dent in your aspirations.
You're having a great season and it seems a shame that you should have your season derailed by your own pitch.
With a first team that is excellent but little depth your own pitch is likely to be the deciding factor in a great season.
We don't have undersoil heating at fratton but we don't need it as it rarely freezes on the south coast.
As for the game. We have been getting better every game of late and the 70% possession at Ipswich in the fa cup has been a norm for us.
Goals are flowing and we are definitely looking up at automatic places.
Next week is our crunch match. We've beaten all the sides above us away and now entertain the first of the three in Oxford at home.
I wish you luck for the future and was a tad annoyed at the prospect of you being fleeced by Rangers of talent.
See you soon.

Very good post I am beginning to wonder if it might be worth switching venue for at least 1game because we are just losing ground and playing catch up could be damaging.

Good post Jack, and of the top teams,we should have beaten Northampton and Oxford.
Portsmouth however are slowly building a good team and hence playing them on a Tuesday night would /maybe give us an edge!!!
Within five years they will be in championship, certain of that.

On the plus side, most teams don't fancy coming Accy on a midweek game.

Most of Accrington don't even like coming on a midweek game mate!

According to the weather forecast there are barely three or four hours between now and Tuesday night when the temperature is above zero. The fixture jam could get worse before it gets better.

All these games being off can damage what little home support we have people get out of the habit everything conspires against our little club.

I would disagree up to a point. most of our support would go if they could regardless. I'm going to try for some of the midweek games if holidays allow. We don't have enough floating fans to make a difference it's the away fans that make the difference

Had to Google map this afternoon ....I'd forgotten how to get to 'the Crown' !

I was convinced it would be on from the conditions of grass and pitches less than two miles away, and seen as it was the only league game to be called off I would guess it was down to all the retained water being frozen.

At least the Stanley Chairman didn't do a 100% guarantee the match would be on like Portsmouth have done in the near past before being frozen off. The away fans would have set off 9 bells latest if by road.

spot on for me. supporting a club is habit forming and i.m afraid some will have found other things to do in the winter break. thankfully this didn.t happen when we were struggling a little while ago on and off the pitch. the only bright spot is that we are still in the play off positions and have something to cheer about. our luck will change i.m sure.

As someone (almost) sang, "if it wasn't for bad luck, we'd have no luck at all".

Everyone's frustrated that the game was off but at least the club did something to feed the travelling fans:
Accrington Stanley put on free buffet for fans that made wasted trip to Saturday's postponed game against Portsmouth | Daily Mail Online

If it was at Warwick services a few might have benefited. Non-story really.

So it's only Portsmouth fans that travel to the games? Aye right  . Another forty quid nigh on for half a dozen pints in Accy!! And I didn't even get up to the Crown as I was having a few pints in the town and that after waiting over an hour in preston because of train problems.

And getting home was a problem because of snow in Cumbria and D&G. That and making it past the pub when I got back on home territory :D .

I met a few Portsmouth fans in the town who had came up the night before and some who did likewise in Preston around 11ish. Those in the town did go to the Crown and one even said he was allowed into the ground and got a programme so no it isn't a non story it's part of following a league 2 club with very little money.

And I didn't even get a programme after all that :( !! But it won't stop me coming back down again.

It's winter and it's league 2. So far I've travelled nearly 700 miles to try to watch accy games that have been off and that's only 3 games to Preston, Carlisle and Accy so I know more than most what it feels like.

Hardly my fault. I am on he side of travelling support, and I know a sausage roll doesn't make up for 500 miles wasted for the residual number who may have made it.

Supporting a League 2 club is a luxury, try Cheshire league.

Nobody is blaming you because it isn't anybody's fault. Any football fan traveling to games in this weather is taking a chance and the further you travel more of a chance you are taking. I knew that but took the chance and I am not going to whine about it.

What would your solution be? Call the game off the night before then whine because the pitch was playable come kick off?

If you don't want to risk wasting 500 miles don't go and if you do don't whine about it when the game is off. The weather forecast is hardly a secret and the fact that we have had so many other games called off should have been a clue that there was a risk.

It was £62 for me but no pints - I diverted to Ewood Park in the hope of watching some football. I use the word "football" loosely as far as Blackburn Rovers are concerned. They had 11 players wearing blue & white shirts but they experienced considerable difficulty in passing to a player wearing the same coloured shirt. Proccy and some mates were sitting near me - they didn't reappear for the 2nd half!

And that had a knock-on effect for trains heading south.

I also met a few at Preston station around 12ish. They had also stayed overnight. Possibly the same ones. They were very philosophical about the postponement.

I made the mistake of going to Ewood once when our game was off and it was just the same except it was in the premiership and I won't make that mistake again.

I'm luckier than you in that I don't usually have to commit to any further than Carlisle until later in the day however that costs more overall but I wouldn't risk booking specific trains in this weather.

I think most fans are philosophical about it however the advent of social media has allowed some muppet a platform :D

Easy, tiger, all Chewbacca was saying was that the great majority of Pompey fans would only have got about halfway when the game was called off, so not that many would have benefited from the club's generosity at the Crown.

I had the same thought, but unlike Chewie thought it did make a good pro-Stanley story. Not sure why thinking differently makes him a muppet looking for a platform?

For the avoidance of doubt, I consider your own dedication to the cause (and supporting the railways :D) is wholly admirable and I enjoy reading about your weekly exploits :)

Just to clarify, I wasn't meaning Chewie or anyone else on here with the exception of the now departed one. I was referring in part to some of the abuse directed at the club on twitter and just the fact that social media has allowed dafties in general to join together with their nonsense when previously they could be ignored.
