You can make 5 subs but only on 3 occasions. If you make 1 sub or 3 at same time it only counts as one occasion.

Not at all. Imagine being 1-0 down with a couple of minutes to go with the momentum in your favour and the opposition slowing the game down the 5 separate subs.
It’s always been the case with 3 opportunities, just increased the amount of subs to 5.
