Season 18
As we approach Season 18 - 'The Return of League 2' as it is otherwise known, what do we think it will have in store for us??
What should we expect? Some of our better players have gone - others may follow..... Our more experienced players are in their mid 30's, so will not have many more seasons in them. Scoring goals has been a problem since Kayden left and keeping them out has been a struggle recently too - Harvey and Notts. leaving will not help that to be honest. Of the players we know, I think Kode and Josh Woods are more than capable - Adekoya could surprise us - and we have seen nothing of Matt Lowe to form any opinion. We have enough midfielders to sink a battleship and we know what their capabilities are. Defenders on the other hand........... and we need a couple of keepers probably?? We have seen some in comings - an experienced defender in Mellor and some youngsters in Hills, Shipley and Andrews. We have to get it right this season and by that I am not suggesting we go straight back up, but we need to win games fast and keep at the right end of the table all season. In Coley we trust. :) :) |
Re: Season 18
I think we will be ok, mind you i said that last season.i dont trust a man who does nowt only sit on wall.
|
Re: Season 18
Val, it's the old story story I'm afraid. We won't have much idea until we are 10 games into the season. I trust Coley to put out a competitive side every game, but we must stay clear of the injuries we suffered last year. There must be question marks over the injury record of Jay, Korede, Macca, Joe and our captain. I think Matt had enough games at the end of last season to help him come back OK and I think the lower quality of defenders in League 2 will suit him better. Hard-Work, Team Spirit and organisation can take you a long way in League 2 but above all else we need players who can stay fit for most of the season. The number of senior players in our squad and key players who have left us means a season of transition is required. A mid-table finish in League 2 will be a success in my book along with finding one or two rough diamonds along the way.

Wonder if todays starting 11 resembles what we
might see next week for season opener. |

Not seen any pre-season games, nor do I know everything about the loan players.....
After watching The Lionesses against China, playing a very good version of 3-5-2, this is my starting XI for Newport :) Have to wait and see :) LOWE KODE/WOODS WHALLEY/ROS DAN MARTIN MCCONVILLE PRITCHARD/NOLAN SEAMUS/LIAM JAY RICH/SHIPLEY(L) MELLOR HILLS (L) SAVIN |
Re: Season 18
Given the adverse impact of cards last year, I hope the management have made the players aware of what’s in store for them this season.

First game at home was great and it was brilliant to get that winning at home feeling back :) Though we have lost loads of players, some of the new young lads have been excellent - the old lads too ;) - and Coley and Co. have found some real players, who will be very successful in the coming years :) Not happy with the losses and Barrow at home, but more than happy with Salford away :) Need the feel good to stay and get safe as soon as, then we shall have to wait and see :) :) |
Re: Season 18
Well, ten games in and half of them lost - not what the Doctor ordered and not what I expected after the performance on day one against Newport......?!?!?!?!
Cannot hide a way from the fact that injuries are playing their part, but I know that it is not down to that solely....... :( Some very young and very inexperienced players on show for us yesterday and I feel for them at times. Coley and Co. have a job on their hands, but I am more than confident in their abilities :) (next two games are crucial) :) :) :) |
Re: Season 18
Hope I’m wrong but I fear the next game maybe Ged Brennan’s revenge.
|
Re: Season 18
13 games in and we are 20/50th of the way towards season 19 :)
This is not 'settling' for that, it is being realistic :) :) |
Re: Season 18
Our performances on the field have slightly improved of late so i am hopeful we have turned the corner leading to better things.

Re: Season 18
I’m not sure what or indeed if anything is happening at the club but I worry there is a difference of opinion between the owners and the Management team. If there is I hope sense prevails as we have a wonderful owner and a unique Management team.

Re: Season 18
Looks like the rumours were true….it was great while it lasted.

To flag out publicly they’re available to other clubs.' He also admitted that he hadn't spoken to the manager and his assistant after yesterday's win, before claiming last season's relegation was down to some 'poor decisions' made by the management and himself. 'They failed. In football getting relegated threatens a club. Last season was about p*** poor decisions and management. Including my decisions,' he wrote. 'I’m not replacing them. I’m replacing me," he added. BUT .. don't we all know that as well as being a great benefactor and fan of The Reds, Andy does have a somewhat intransigent side to his nature !. ' The Gentleman is not for moving '... but are the two other antagonists I wonder ?. |
Re: Season 18
All three of them need their heads banging together! This tit for tat stuff belongs in a school playground not at a professional football club
|
Re: Season 18
Having watched the “offending” Jimmy Bell interview as much as I like Jimmy I thought he went the wrong way about things. I really think AHs stance of wait and see is more than fair given the Management pair have 8 months left on contract.

But wait, look who's at the top!!! Oh the cries of derision before we kicked a ball in L2. How some guffawed at the prospect of playing BARROW Well, no one's laughing now. 7 points ahead with a game in hand & in automatic promotion spot. After 21 games played, it's pretty clear that Stanley are a team going nowhere fast. Extended contracts for management? You must be joking! |

1. Do Barrow have a millionaire backer? .....No! 2. Do Barrow have bigger gates than Stanley? .....No! (av'g 3,200) 3. Do Barrow have a bigger budget than Stanley? .... No! Add to that the handicap of being so remote, their current success is even more remarkable. In many ways Barrow & Stanley's circumstances are very similar, except.... Could it be that they have a young manager who knows how to get the best out of his players & actually has an effective game plan. |

Since he took over the reigns 3 weeks ago they're undefeated. Seem to recall suggesting we could do worse than appoint him when relegation was looking obvious toward the end of last season. We may well live to regret letting him go. |

Re: Season 18
Just to clarify some facts on Barrow.
They do pay more money than ASFC and are likely to pay more per player as they only have a small first team squad and no Academy. They train in Manchester and only travel to Barrow on home match days Whilst they may not have a billionaire backer there owner is based in the USA (I believe). Crowd wise they have a larger area to get there fans from as they have nobody to compete with!! |

Re: Season 18
Have to admit that - with the fixtures we have had (home particularly) in February - I am disappointed that we are not over the 50 points mark......
The season is in danger of just fizzling out......... :( :) |
Re: Season 18
Will be even more difficult next season with the reduced budget allocation for players. Having said that, most of the player budget goes onto the players who don't play due to injuries or suspensions.
|
Re: Season 18
it has FIZZLED OUT we have been playing poorly for ages now.
|
Re: Season 18
Not just fizzling out, it has dropped of the face of a cliff.....................
46/50 of the way to 19, sooner we get there the better :) 20 will be very difficult................ :) |
Re: Season 18
Yes you're right Val, 5 points from the last 21 (I think) is relegation form. Form has deserted us in 2024. We need players back urgently......and going forward we need to ensure that we have a durable squad next season which means "weeding-out" players who are injury- prone ...

Re: Season 18
Just watched and listened to our captains interview about saying good by to John and Jimmy at the club on Monday this week, his testimonial year, John Doolan and Andy Dibble, Injuries and the effect its had on last season and this season, and the remaining games left to play......What an interview and how well Seamus speaks and answers some really tricky questions from radio lancashire (Andy Bayes I think?). I saw it via X (Twitter) butvit must be available via the BBC Sport or Radio Lancashire website.....Well worth a view/listen....

Re: Season 18
50/50ths of the way there - JOB DONE :)
We can now look forwards to season 19, which is an absolute miracle :) To make 20 would be fantastic :) :) |
Re: Season 18
dan jewell should be dismissed in my view.
|
Re: Season 18
Yep, we've made it to the magical 50 points - good performance from our young guns today, particularly in the second half when I thought we were going to get the winner but all.in all a draw was perhaps a fair result against a much more experienced side.
Their press guys definitely had a case of sour grapes when we equalised from Jack's penalty, moaning about it being debatable & 'not even having a decent view of the incident' - serves 'em right for telling me to shush when I was trying to tell them how to pronounce Shaun's surname |
Re: Season 18
AccyMad, it was a soft penalty, but it was a penalty :)
As for Shaun, I am sick and tired of hearing Wally......... :) :) |

Val I don't understand how/why it was a soft penalty today. The players hand and arm were high and away from his body and deflected the cross out of play? It was a "stonewall" penalty for me.

Re: Season 18
Thought it was a really enjoyable, exciting game yesterday and a draw was probably a fair result, although Stanley were on top for most of the second half, with some excellent attacking moves. Young O’Brien and Martin again outstanding, but a good all-round performance from the squad.
I wonder if Cashy’s comments re Dan Jewel refer to his post match blather on Radio Lancs which were all about ‘management’ issues and, like 99.9% of the media’s output, are designed solely to generate tomorrow’s headlines. |

Yeah I always thought Dan Jewel was too close to John Coleman. Never asked the really difficult questions about "missing players".......this season it's been the elusive Baba Fernandes....where is he?
|
Re: Season 18
Mr CG
Things happen at the club the need to stay P & C. Baba was injured in a bounce game at Blackburn some time ago. He is also on paternity leave at the moment. He is back fit and needs minutes. Likely I'm hearing going to be in the squad to face PNE in the CL Cup next week. |
Re: Season 18
Being open and transparent in the right areas, at the right time goes along way to appeasing people. Just a thought.

For those that haven’t caught up yet. Jimmy does not represent @ASFCofficial now. Very shortly it will be clear who does represent the club. Everyone will be available for questions. I’m excited about our future plans, can’t wait. Please pass on to @BBCLancsSport Have we signed a new manager then? Seems like it? |

Re: Season 18
Superb celebrations after the match in Coley’s. The whole squad came in and mixed with fans and posed for photos. Great bunch of lads and I personally thanked the loan players and wished them every success in the future. After the match John Doolan shook hands with everyone and thanked us all individually for our support. Great guy! I am already looking forward to next season!
ON STANLEY ON!:theband: |
Re: Season 18
A great performance, result and post-match celebration to end a (typical) roller-coaster season.
Next season will be just as difficult but I feel more optimistic about the club than for some years. Would be interested to know how at many other clubs ordinary fans would get to meet and chat to all the players, the management, and the owner within an hour of the final match. Looking forward to Tuesday night. |
