Re: Which of the out of contract players should be on the retained list and which not
I think our centre back trio of Matthews, Rawson and Ward is quite adequate for this division, and I would be happy to keep all three. Matthews seems to be an excellent signing. Thought we would miss Awe more than we did. Only miss his occasional running with the ball, useful when the midfield is so stationary.
Less impressed with the midfield. I am no fan of Coyle, and no longer of Seamus either. With five at the back and two holding midfielders you need more running, particularly running with the ball than we get from the present lot. Someone like one of my favourites, Matt Butcher, or a poor man’s version of him.
Whalley runs of course, but he is not a true forward. I still think Coleman got us relegated by believing that he was. But he is excellent at doing what he was allowed to do on occasion, supporting and interchanging with two strikers. I think our best version was when he was playing behind and around Walton and Elvis. But Shaun cannot do all the running. We need to get something from the holding midfielders, too.
I would keep Walton and Whalley, and remain indifferent to most of the others. Not to Connor O’Brien of course, but he has to leave for his own sake. Wish him well as long as he stays away from Salford or Forest Green.
