Re: Wanted information on john blake ltd of oxford street, accrington

Thanks T J Edwards. I do have several old catalogues of John Blake Ltd, so I think Bob's suggestion that you pass yours on to the Local Studies collection is an excellent one. I think it is so...

Re: MASSEY Family, Clayton

Hi Bob, You will perhaps be surprised to hear that Arsenius Massey was the brother of Winifred Blake (wife of John), so he is an ancestor of mine. Indeed, he never married (who would want to be...

Re: Wanted information on john blake ltd of oxford street, accrington

I have only just seen this thread. I would be happy to help with family history - your assumption that John Blake's parents came to Accrington is not correct - and I have quite a bit of material on...

Re: Wanted information on john blake ltd of oxford street, accrington

Hi Lynne, Bob alerted me to your offer of a CD. I am the lady (!) he refers to - and I am most interested in this CD. John Blake was my great-grandfather. Do please phone me if Bob has given you my...

Re: Where was this photo taken???

Yes, Atarah, we have corresponded, at some length! I did know that the Art Gallery was designed by Brierley, but not that it was celebrating its centenary this year. I am retiring soon, so maybe I'll...

Re: Where was this photo taken???

Catherine has come up trumps! It IS Whalley Abbey, and shows a view of the East Front and Oratory.
Thanks to everyone, Bob and Catherine especially.

Re: Where was this photo taken???

Thanks, Bob, a good idea. In fact the first time I met Catherine, at a day school some years back, we were in Whalley Abbey! (But I don't remember it well enough to recognise it from the photo...).

Re: Where was this photo taken???

I went through the album some years ago with my Mum, and made a note of the pictures she identified, so I think she must have suggested Whalley Abbey (but with a ?query?) - the "history" I have is as...

Re: Where was this photo taken???

Yes I think so - a ruined church, chapel, or similar. That's why I thought it might be Whalley Abbey.

Where was this photo taken???

This photo, taken maybe in the 1890s/1900s, is in a family album of mine, which belonged to the Blakes of Accrington (Dykenook Lodge family). Does anyone know where it is? I thought it might be...

Re: DYKE NOOK, Whalley Road, Accrington

Hi Darren, Yes I had heard that your parents had been working on the house. They very kindly showed a cousin of mine around a few months ago and she reported that it was looking great! We descendants...

Re: Myrtle House

Thanks for the map reference, Panther. Trouble is, I don't know where to look for 154 Blackburn Road! I don't know Accrington very well, in fact hardly at all. I was hoping someone might know the...

Myrtle House

Does anyone know if the Myrtle House which is a doctors' practice (154 Blackburn Road) is likely to have been around in 1865? It is where my great-grandmother was living at the time of her marriage....

Re: Piccadilly, Accrington

Thank you! That makes complete sense, as the engineer in question was living in Dutton Street at the time.

Piccadilly, Accrington

Can anyone tell me where is, or was, Piccadilly in Accrington?? It is given as the address of an engineering firm in Kelly's 1864 and Slater's 1865 trade directories, but I can't find it on a modern...

Christie's Foundry

Does anyone know anything about Christie's Foundry (also known as Accrington Foundry)? It existed in the 1850s, but for how long? Who set it up? Alexander Christie? His son John? And are there any...

Re: DYKE NOOK, Whalley Road, Accrington

Have just seen this, a year after it was posted.... I helped to start this thread, way back..... My grandparents built Dyke Nook Lodge and employed Gertrude Jekyll to design the garden. I don't know...

Post Re: DYKE NOOK, Whalley Road, Accrington

Hi Barnsie, The house we have been talking about is "Dyke Nook Lodge" which was definitely built in 1907 by my grandparents, but I believe there once existed a "Dyke Nook House". A couple of years...

Post Re: DYKE NOOK, Whalley Road, Accrington

I'd love to know who has bought the house - and what they plan to do to it! The Blake triplets were my much loved uncles, all now dead alas. But their youngest sister is my Mum and is still living. I...

Post Re: DYKE NOOK, Whalley Road, Accrington

Have just found this site by chance. My grandparents, Hubert and Marie Blake, built Dyke Nook in 1907. I believe the house was sold to Sir W Cocker in 1947. I have a copy of a sale brochure of the...
