    Oswaldtwistle History

Hi - I'm tracing 10 siblings of the COCK family including my Grandad. This is mainly around the Fylde Coast but one brother Henry Cock was a resident of Oswaldtwistle when he died in 1934. I've applied for a copy of his DC and see that he ran a Fish & Chip Restaurant at 5 Catlow Hall Street...

The centre of Foxhill Bank Brow was the demarcation line between Church and Oswaldtwistle. Does anyone have any information about the works (Nehesco?) which used to be at the bottom of the brow? Info requested by my father Owd Bert. Thanks.

Blink and they're putting stuff in your bin

Considering that West End Ossy is a good area of the district, I'm surprised that if you leave your grey bin out overnight : eg Sunday late on as you're maybe working Monday morning ( a reasonable scenario ) anything from food waste eg potatoes to bagged up ( thankfully ) dog poo bags are...

    Farmer's Market in Ossy.

Councillor Britcliffe has announced that Ossy is having a farmers market next month and,if successful, it could become a regular thing. I think this is a cracking idea and can only be a good thing for the town. I'll be trotting over there anyway. :)

    Loose Boxer dog, West End.

I've just been to the Spar on Thwaites Rd. (9.10 pm 25 th Feb) and there is a brown and white boxer running around that has obviously escaped from home. If anyone is missing one or who knows who's dog it is, it was last seen running up Banbury Avenue chasing someone walking their own dogs. It...

    Ibbotts

In the Church Kirk registers pre 1812 there are several references to the placename 'Ibbotts in Oswaldtwistle.' There are no entries for it after 1812. I cannot find it on the first edition 6 inch OS map dating from the 1840s. Does anyone have any idea where it was? Thanks

    The spelling of Oswaldtwistle

I have just found an 1823 encyclopedia in which Ossie is spelled as Oswaltwistle ( ie no letter 'd') / It reads: Oswaltwistle, a township of Lancashire. In 1801, the population was 2710, with 951 employed in manufactures: six miles North-east of Blackburn..... It credits Cruttwell's...

    Only Foals and Horses.

I've just read in the Accrington Observer of the death of Olive Lomas, the founder of Only Foals and Horses animal sanctuary.I often read of the sanctuary needing funds to feed and home the animals and thought she sounded a wonderful, selfless woman. I hope the sanctuary carries on the great work...

    Fracking

Dear Ossy Folk Should the people of Ossy be concerned about 'fracking' in any adjacent area that reaches even the boundaries of our town? This was once a mining town and we live above old coal mining tunnels and shafts and subsidence is not uncommon - the lintel over my front door is fractured...

    Pets Corner at Rhyddings Park

While walking round Rhyddings Park Pet Corner yesterday I noticed that the animals seemed to have no water to drink, the ducks especially seemed desperate for a drink and were putting their heads down the 'plug hole' of the pond (which is dry) to try and get a drink. Does anyone know of contact...

    Horses over Harvey street fields

Does anyone know anything about the two horses tethered up at the front of Wordsworth Close.? They have been outside in all weather for a few weeks. I see them on my way to work every day. Surely they should be in some sort of shelter in this weather, it's snowing and blowing a gale as I type...

    Duncan Square, Ossie

I think I know why Duncan Square is so named, but want to seek the opinion of others before posting about it on the Street Names thread. When did the name first crop up? Is it shown on early maps - what's the earliest? I suspect it will be early 1800s I cannot find my History of Ossie & Church...
