Yesterday, against my better judgement, we took the bus to Southport.
Over the last three weeks with that escapade of Ma's I haven't been very far.
Mainly for fear of something nasty happening and me being out and about on a ride out.
I have been up to Ma's every day.....doing bits for her....making her bed, shopping, taking her some grub.
When I went on Friday she expressed the wish that we go out on Saturday if the weather was kind.
I woke quite early(fiveish) and could see the sunshine prising at the blinds.
I quit the pit just after six. Showered and collected the washing to put on while we were out.
We were on the 8.20 bus to Preston....the morning had taken a downturn and it looked a bit 'black over Bob's mothers'.....no matter we were on the bus so if it did rain we would be fine and dry.
They have changed the times of the Southport bus. Previously we had to sprint to get the Southport bus, but with the time change we had just missed one.
Preston must be the draughtiest bus station in the country.
I buttoned my coat right up to the neck(this is a woman who sleeps with her butt sticking out of bed even in the depths of winter...a woman who has her own internal boiler going on full blast....but I was a tad chilly)
The bus came in on time but the driver sauntered off...the replacement driver sauntered to the bus five minutes after the bus should have been on the way to Southport...then spent another five minutes checking the bus and sorting out his seat, the mirrors and getting the ticket machine ticketty boo.
The queue(which by now snaked a good way down the bus station) was getting restless.
Then when we got on he was terse and was hurrying us along like we had caused the delay.
Needless to say when we got out of the centre and onto the open road he hit the accelerator like the hounds of hell were snapping at his heels.
It was nearly 11 am when we got to Lord St.
It was very very windy......with evil gusts coming in from the seafront.
We had a walk down Lord St...spending the money we will have when our ship comes in...so far all that has come in have been a few lumps of driftwood and a couple of plastic bottles.
To be honest I really didn't see anything that floated my boat...nothing that I would go overboard for.
All I bought was a loaf some gravy granules and some roasted dried onions.
We had lunch and himself asked me if I was going to do my brisk walk along the pier.
'Not a chance' was my reply......I feared that the wind might just pick me up and deposit me on the sands at Blackpool...it really was that fierce.
We headed for the bus to come home.
According to the timetable there was one due in five minutes.
An hour later we were still waiting. Then two turned up together.
There was a lot of grumbling to the driver as travellers got on...roadworks were blamed.
We missed our connection in Preston and had another lengthy wait.
Himself asked if I wanted to go and look around Preston Market......I figured they would be packing up so I declined.
We were back Home at 4.20. Himself is not a patient waiter and he grumbled most of the way back....I just did the 'zen' thing and turned off...letting him ramble on.
I was ready for a cuppa and to kick off my shoes....and phone Ma to make sure she was alright....she was!
She said she was glad we had been for a bus ride.
