A busy week.

I just don't know where this week has gone.
Monday we did some bits for Ma....and I did some of my own housework too...got the sheets off the bed....in the wash and on the line drying.
I would have line dried, freshly laundered cotton sheets on my bed every night if I could.......I always seem to sleep better on newly washed sheets.
Tuesday and Wednesday we were at the Royal Blackburn.......that ate into my days.
Wednesday morning I had a new (well, new to her) wheel chair delivered for Ma.
Her old one is quite heavy for me, ungainly too. There has been many a time it has nearly overbalanced me when I am taking it to where the taxi picks us up....

I have imagined myself tumbling down the hill with the wheelchair following me and giving me a bop on the head as we both reached the bottom...me all tattered as a result of going through the brambles. Can you just see that picture in your head?
Anyway the newer model is lighter and is somehow less bulky.....best of all the brakes work.
What is the point of those lasses in resus putting ma back together if her wheelchair trundles off and leaves her as a mess of jam in the road. That was a distinct possibility if I didn't put my foot under the wheel to stop it 'wandering'.
because this chair is 'pre-loved'(or second hand) I took the fabric seating off and put it into the washer, even though it didn't look grubby, I felt happier doing this.
Thursday we did the usual shopping for the old birds.....that is Ma and the old lady himself shops for.
We also took ma the new chariot that day...so I trundled up the hill with the bags of shopping and himself took the chair up.

I was going to stay downtown and have a look round the shops but I was a bit fagged out.
I was glad I didn't stay down town as the company who were going to be putting the stairlift in for Ma rang me.
The stairlift was ready to be fitted.....they wanted to know if they could fit it Friday morning?
I said that would be alright with me and Ma had left it in my hands.
Ma has told me that I am now promoted to her 'majordomo' and that my stipend would be doubled......but double nowt is still nowt.

Friday I was up at Ma's bright and early.....ready for the man who was going to be doing the work.
I wanted to vac the stairs before he came....Yes, I know that is a bit daft as it would probably need doing again once he finished.
I was hooveing Ma's bedroom and making her bed when the chap came.
The stairs were loaded with his tranklements.....tools bits of rail and a chair folded up on its side at the bottom.

I asked him if he needed anything as I was going to do the bathroom and landing.......I was going to give the carpet a going over with the shampoo-er too.
It was a bit like bedlam with him and his power tools and me with mine.

I stopped off what I was doing at 11am and went to have a look at how things were progressing. The rail was up the side of the stairs, the bannisters were off and the chair was just being attached to the rail.

I asked Ma what she would like for lunch......she wanted a fish and some peas from the chippy.....she also wanted some magazines so I got my bag and hoofed it into town......I did her banking and paid some bills for her too.
Once I had got her a fish, I hared back up to her house so that she could eat it while it was still fresh and hot.

The job was all but done. We just had to do the paper work, cough up the dosh and then be given a driving lesson.
We both listened intently and Ma had a go on the stairlift. It took her up the stairs in a very sedate manner.
Once the chap saw that we were Ok with the device, he left us to go to his next job.

I wasn't sure that Ma would use the stairlift. Remember she only got it to keep me quiet...to get me off her case.

I tidied away my cleaning gear and left Ma to her own devices. I had been at her house for about five hours .

Later on Friday I rang her to find out how she was diddling. She told me that she had gone for an afternoon rest once I had left.....lying on her bed in a recumbent pose watching the TV.
I asked how she got upstairs....
'I took the ski lift' she said.
Thank goodness for that.

That was my week.

I've always been curious about those stairlifts. My next door neighbour could use one, I'm sure. She's 86 with a heart condition and finding the stairs hard to deal with now. Selfishly speaking it would enable her to stay in her home longer (she's a good and quiet neighbour to have!) It sounds like a useful contraption, and one that I might need myself some day.

It is brilliant.
It is a refurbished model,so cheaper than new.
I wasn't sure that Ma would take to it, but she has.
Now every afternoon she goes for a siesta......something she could not do before because going up and down the stairs left her whacked.
As for your neighbour...I am sure she would benefit. There is nothing selfish in wanting her to stay in her own home for as long as possible.
It is far better for her physical and mental health, to be in an environment she is happy with, among neighbours who are friends.
