I was out leafleting today and got my first really bad reaction. I was on my own just doing the few streets near to my house when I encountered quite a biggish chap coming out of his house. I smiled and handed my leaflet over and explained who I was and what I was doing. Then he launched into quite an agressive tirade about the current government. Called Tony Blair a lying cheating ******* and then called me one too because supposedly Tony Blair is my boss.

This is just the daftest thing ever - I tried rationally to explain that local politics was entirely different from national politics but it wasn't really worth me trying. I tried to explain that locally the Council was run by the Conservatives and that I believed that the local Labour party had the best to offer the area but he wasn't even prepared to listen. So, after letting him rant on at me for while I just walked away to deliver more leaflets to the next houses. I had no option and I really don't think I'll be able to count on his vote at all.

As I've said before I think this is one of the biggest problems that Labour has in this area and probably throughout the country at the moment. I also bumped in to an ex-Labour party member and he too was unhappy about the national politics (primarily the war) but as he understood the difference he was happy to pledge his vote for me.

I'm doing this purely because of local issues and because I believe that the Labour party has the best to offer the area right here and right now. I admire Greg Pope a lot for the work that he does but there is no way that I would ever want to do what he does. National politics holds no sway for me, I'm just committed to this town and this area.
