When I worked there (1971 - 1982) we remained open while we were audited.

It could be because Accrington Post Office is no longer a crown office. Incidentally, Kestrel's brother, he of Tesco fame, worked there for about a year until he left to become a punk rocker.

So what constitutes a crown office Michael?

They are run directly by Post Office Ltd, unlike sub post offices and franchise offices. Likewise, the employees are employed directly by Post Office Ltd.
