accy pubs

I remember that the number 1 bus from Clayton to Ossy left from the Forts Arms and stopped at the Black Dog in Ossy .... it seems that every bus stop was by a pub ... altho' I can't remember them all (The Load of Mischief stands out) ... of course, I never thought I would have to.

I remember the Junction .... good pint .... played a lot of darts there ... I can't remember the name of the landlord, but I did have the hots for his daughter .... I think he took over the New Brewery pub, another John Smith's house, tho' I can't remember exactly where it was  ....
that was on Maudsley street always called in yon to have a drink wi Mrs Power, top lady Vinnies missus.;) Barry (Baz) the mod, his dad had it fer a while back then.

New it began with a J:I was only 5 at the time

That's a little young to be going into the pub:eek: I waited until I was about 14 before I went into the Prince of Wales, put down my two bob, and, in my best deep voice, ordered a pint of mild:alright: Soon found out that I preferred bitter, tho'. Thwaites' bitter, I still miss it ... altho' I suspect it has changed for the worse, like me:dancedog:

Did anyone ever try to do the pub crawl from the Black Dog down to the Church Commercial .... tried it several times (only arrested once) and never made it .... Buddy of mine, Sid Wright, said that it could be done if one only had a half pint in each pub .... maybe, but god didn't make half days.

yep did it, but from commercial up but never included church con, only twice did the full distance i think. was never arrested on it, though the "Lion" house, think it was the horseshoe, just a few yards up from "Prince Of Wales" george the landlord did chase me down union rd wi a bayonet.:D

Planned to do that pub crawl on my fortieth, think I made it to the Foxhill(if that is the one they painted yellow) before I needed a bit of sleep. Went to my mates had a couple of hours then carried on. We must be barmy!!

And every half hour that bus would go to the top of New Lane and turn round at the White Bull Eric:D

No .... but my gran was from Ossy, her maiden name was Webster .... and my great uncle Matthew lived there ... used to hang out with a couple of guys from up Ossy way ... on most sundays we used to play 3 card brag at a buddy's place up by the Black Dog .... Donald Vaughn .... and then we would have a few pints in the Dog before staggering off in the general direction of Accrington:theband: .... ubi sunt;)

I knew the 3 Vaughn brothers - Edward (my age - same class at primary school), David (later owned the big toy shop on Church St Accy) - Donald - vaguely remember him.
Anyone know what happened to Edward? Did hear years ago that he qualified as a doc.

I think I remember that Edward was a doctor ... and that's the route Donald went too ... he did his university in London; their dad was a lawyer, I believe. Donald was in my year at Accy Grammar; so he must be in his early 60s now. Considering the amount we drank, and Donald was a sterling drinker, he probably specialized in diseases of the liver;)

I knew Donald quite well Eric, he used to mate out with a guy called Billy Walmsley, who's mother had the hair dressers opposite the Town Hall, another chap called John Marsden, John went into the Marchant Navy, he now lives on Fairfield Street, and is a regular in Ossy Con. Brian MaCandrew was another of the crew. Billy Walmsley now lives in East Anglia, near Grea Yarmouth, He's a Dentist, that is if he hasn't retired now, they are all around my age 61 or 62

There is a list of pubs in existance in 1898 on page7 of 'An accrington Mixture' which I edited & published in 1995. I don't recall where I got the information, but with the exception of the Pickup Arms, I believe the information as to locations is correct. It doesn't list clubs. Because I am not competetent on the computer, I cannot email copies, but a PM bearing your email and/or postal address will get you a copy, as it will force me to learn how to send pics. It doesn't incl;ude clubs, but I have detaails of the
clubs in existance in 1938. They boasted 7,000 members:-

King St WMC...Stephenson memorial WMC...Globe Bowling & Billiard...Accrington District Club...Burnley rd Subscription Bowling Green...Central conservative...Canine WMC...Spring Hill Bowling & WMC...Dyers' & Finishers' WMC...Poplar WMC...Central WMC...Old Band Club...Baxenden WMC...Sydney st WMC...Baxenden Conservative...Discharged & Demobilised Sailors' & Soldiers' Memorial Club...Willopw Mount WMC...Masonic Association...Grafton recretaion...Baxenden & District Golf...Amalgamated Engineering Union (A.E.U.) Club...Marlborough WMC...Huncoat WMC...Green Haworth WMC...Bold St...central Catholic...Accrington Transport & Social

I don't know where some of these were.

Can anyone tell me when Bash Con Club opened. Is it still going? Was the upstairs domestric quarters at one time?
